Hello again, slight branch from last year (slight in that it has a few non-Mario block examples included)

To those not in the know, this is a legitimate fixation of a few like myself towards series of pics inspired from a one-time item in a Mario game (no, 3D World's wearables are too big to be of the same effect -- though once more the common depiction is still far removed from the brick pattern in games).

There are a few theories as to the appeal (if the time is allotted for it), I'm sure. All you gotta know is this: it's mostly about girls wearing boxes -- in a manner of speaking. Most of the time, very clingy boxes that take on their features in a symbiotic fashion and that's perfectly natural.

What? It isn't?! Oh well, it is what it is. But hey, let's enjoy the ride as long as it's allowed to last.

Here's the OP of the last time we had this thread, I think it's important to show the origins and its mutations somewhat. Though I believe that Smash Bros 3DS. did help get the item more notice.

The gold block is an item that makes Mario or the wearer emit a bunch of coins when he moves. That in on itself probably isn't very interesting to work with, but it somewhat helped inspire an NSFW direction for the item's usage (granted it's a bit of a stretch compared to the Mega Mushroom or P-Balloon for their respective reasons).

The lack of a playable Peach in NSMB2 spurned a curiosity to see her wearing it a few times but sort of prettied up a bit. The brick pattern was seen as a restriction than a challenge, so a few features from the block people in Mario & Luigi games was used at first. Said direction was ditched when some commissioned artists just ended up drawing the character's eyes as is, without the beady shuttery things for eyes. I didn't raise a fuss and just went with it since it was simpler that way.

Cubic noses are usually done in respect to Mario's wearing of the item but he's got a big honker, that doesn't really apply to a lot of the girls wearing it. Including Peach. So a small cube nose is done instead. Though at first, a coin-shaped nose was done for Peach in one depiction.

This is actually an edit.

The first rendition had no hair. The second had Peach's hair coming out the bottom of the block and the block was too open/not flush with her head. You could see a bit of her chin.

I wanted the block to be enclosed but hair "vents" out either close to the corners or a small hole out the back in Peach's case. For other character, I decided the logic is one of two things

1) The Block is foldable, it only obscured the face, leaving some hair to flow

or

2) The block engulfs the whole head, adopting some features of whomever wears it.

It isn't out of the question to invite a little of 1 and 2 either. The point is the character is WEARING the block. It doesn't replace their head.

Sometimes I might sketch stuff myself in very, very desperate or brainstorm-type situations.

There's some donut steel shit for the sake of fetish reasons. A Zelda variant for example is a cube that HAPPENS to be gold and has ear nubs for Hylians such as Zelda herself.

I just like girls wearing stuff on their heads, man. Cubic based headwear's inorganic and clashes with the curvy organic feeling lines. The idea of said construct adopting their features isn't quite part of the fetish so much as it's to convey the character.

Doing this in CG is a horse of another color. Lots of crude attempts, lots of block models from various Mario games downloaded (including a Smash trophy, which actually isn't very good to work with. 3D World and Galaxy's are slightly more favorable for an aesthetic so no loss there).

Not like I'm not trying to convey them like the 2D pics or anything. It's just...really hard right now. Research must be done.

Oh yeah and Alpha effects on hair are running me in a brick wall. I'd be down for CG requests otherwise.

A lot of these are commissions, so I can name the respective artists if you'd like to know who did what. Very few drawings are actually mine, but they're there.

I've a dA, but only posted the Blockhead Jasmine pic there. Not too big on updating the page as often, so I wouldn't count on it as a source. I do intend on posting Miku's colors and the Shoxxe pics there ... eventually. Don't think I have clearance to post Selvaria since that was commissioned a 3rd party.

I do plan on starting a tumblr devoted to this material though, it's easier to focus on posting this stuff and my doodles when followers know what they're getting into.

Yeah, some things don't turn out so hot. This might be okay but stuff like SFV models are segmented in a way that makes it hard to work on (ideally the head would be a singular mesh) it also doesn't help the the meshs are shared in odd ways. Like Chun-Li's braids being linked to her face.

SFIV models are thankfully more manageable but I haven't made anything with those yet.

Attempts to make a "branch" for Zelda lore. Rather than just give an existing Zelda a coinblock, the idea was to have a wearable Goddess Cube. The design was lifted from one of the scrapped SS Zelda concepts.

Mind you this is one of the few times "ears" are allowed on the block so long as they don't take an organic shape. Also Zelda's just one of those characters where it'd just be weird if there wasn't a stand-in.

Come to think of it, when did Shygirl stuff start? I remember seeing fanart (or fanmade sprite) of Peach in tribalwear with a Shyguy mask as early as 2007 but I don't think I recall Shygals taking off for a while.

There's also key differences from Shygirl.

Like the camp of expressive mask vs. fixed mask, making a shygirl mask invoke a gender change as well as transformation should a guy wear it, whether or not they have faces underneath said masks or if it's just nightmare fuel because Luigi's Mansion and Power Tennis so you might see lamprey teeth underneath or something like that. The well runs a bit deeper but there's a lot of add-on material for what "works" about Shygirls to its fans.

Most of the variations here when it is coinblock related just lies in how the block looks, how much hair is obscured/visible and whether something's SFW or not. Not as much to go on but at the same time, that just means it's straightforward and the fixation lies in what's seen more than what's implied (or inferred.)

The simpler types haven't been forgotten. While I do tend to lean on the more streamlined look, it doesn't mean the simpler type won't be used again. After all Miku was commissioned long after the streamlined depictions were well established.

Plus if it's a preference for a character, there's no harm in asking I suppose. I could use some tablet time this week.

Simpler sounds like it'd be an interesting challenge to depict on a 3D model. I'd just have to copy the eyes off something like a Sprixie or an item first. Well, drawing is less tedious by comparison of course. Just entertaining the thought a little.

Monitors are pretty similar in that it's boxed shaped headwear, it just avoids the whole "magical" protruding hair aspect altogether.

What I like about it is that the monitors don't have to be one particular shape or color. So the design can be different per character. So I'd love to put that on the table again, bunnox handled those especially well but I'm always open to trying other artists for it in addition.

As far as i'm concerned there was no reason to bring up shygals in this thread. Nothing much to do with each other.
