Alcohol isn't boring pharmacologically. GABA systems are quite amusing. Especially withdraw from chronic usage, assuming you like seizures.
It's only boring socially because it's ubiquitous.

It's important to note they did not legalize them. They just decriminalized them in small amounts. People are still punished for buying in bulk and selling at all. Well, and using multiple times. But rather than any criminal punishment for that, it's just court mandated rehab, meetings, and whatnot.
And I agree with that.
Even heroin and cocaine should be legal to just have and use, logically. Hell, even krokodil. Because if you're dumb enough to inject gasoline and other junk left in, then you're dumb enough to drink racing fuel, which is still technically legal.
Simple use shouldn't be punished, but rather the criminal activity that results from the common lifestyle should.
Violence, threatening health by adulterating drugs, hustling/theft, nodding out in public restrooms with the needle still in, tweaking out and going on rampages, etc.
Much like the laws against drunk behaviour in public, disturbances matter far more than usage. That's where punishment should be focused. Because that's something you can and should actually deter.

Pills means some form of drug is present. They don't have to be used in any way.
Needles are scary and means the drug is serious. They may be injected anywhere. Screw cleaning and sanitising, that's not cool. Screw IV and IM, we bubble shit here.
Anything in a drink will be more like alcohol than anything else. Except maybe giving the user a raging erection or similar, where aphrodisiacs are mentioned.
Regardless, they all make you feel good and your mind go blank.
Unless it's horror, then something like datura comes along and it gets scary accurate. Because it's kind of easy to describe that sort of purely delirious horror.
