Check out Textbroker or one of Reddit's essay writing boards if you're knowledgeable on a specific topic. I started doing both about a year ago.
Textbroker is lucrative because it employs U.S. citizens only, filtering out most of the third-world Indian and African workers who'd write gibberish for cheap and cut everybody's pay grade down to nothing. Reddit's trying to phase out their pay-for-homework boards because they claim it's illegal, though the staff members backing the change are just a few academics getting riled up knowing that their great equalizer might not be as sacred as they once thought.
I'm currently getting two cents a word on Textbroker and average about $20/page for a college-level English essay. I type at 120wpm and have a formal education in English writing, so on an average day I can expect around twenty-five bucks an hour. I write my own hours and usually net around a hundred dollars a day doing almost nothing.
It's better than a labor or retail job but recommend tapping out your other options before you try and dedicate yourself to online freelance writing.
