There is more than three. Those were just the ones that posted what they made in this thread. Others have posted code and code help for them, not to mention the anon_bot snippet is in Ruby, a language that (AFAIK) none of those three write. Hell, even our sticky is on GitHub.
I think if we got an actual collaborative project started, we'd see a lot more development than all the one-man-army developers had... Largely because the project wouldn't hinge on the inspiration of just a single person.

Not really. Hierarchy doesn't work that well for open source. Sure, there needs to be an owner, but if nobody likes them, anyone can fork the project. Also access rights can make anyone have the exact same access. (Mind you, leaderless has its own problems, but it does actually work)

This absolutely isn't true unless you are making something that needs to have a complex engine. Middleware works wonders if you have to make a 3D game, but for anything less, engines require nearly nothing to make. The trick is how mechanics interact with it.
Most indie developers actually seldom use more than SDL and some devotion when they write their games.

I think the best language for this would probably be JavaScript. It is kind of a middle ground language for all the languages mentioned (Ruby, Python, and Java), can run anywhere. (So we can either make it a desktop application that runs natively, or something players don't have to install) It's also quite expressive, while being easy to learn if new people want to join.

Text adventures with free text parsing are archaic.
There is a reason they evolved into point and clicks with "move to" and "push" and then modern point and clicks with smart cursor and active zone highlight, or CYOA and visual novels, while the basic roguelike control scheme remained unchanged since the 80s.
Why not make a cyoa instead. That is what I'm doing, at least, given that i came up with the general concept and no one did anything with it so far.

As for me, my best language is JavaScript, my favorite is Common Lisp, I write Java professionally, and I am a huge fan of Ruby. I don't really care for Python, but that's my own little mental hangup.
