Whatever happened to the anon(s) that were going to rip their old VHS tapes of older Adult Swim broadcasts?
>>
>>84007280
They got out of the pool

You think those oldies from the commercials are still alive?
>>
>>84008186
probably not
>>

Wasn't that stuff stock footage that was already a good decade or two old in 2001?

I taped the last Adult Swim airing of Futurama.
Still have it to this day.

I had an account for that when I was like 14. Totally forgot it existed, honestly. Now to just get an invite...

I threw out my VHS of the Adult Swim premier, I also recorded a test run of Adult Swim shows I think on December 26th 2000. I got Banjo Tooie for Christmas and stop playing around 2am to find shows like Sealab and the Brak Show on Cartoon Network. At least there's this, although Cowboy Bebop is uncut.

Waiting to see if some classic CN ends up on there. AS needs to add more dates of TV shows to the time rift.

I want some city era cartoon network, either that or just one of those days that had the EEnE groovy.

True. Though I don't think they're actual copies of the original broadcasts. Just the pool bumper at the beginning and then copies of the episodes sourced from their digital archive.

I would buy the shit out of Adult Swim box type stuff where the gimmick is the episodes from each show are mixed in with each other along with bumpers and other misc stuff from that general period of time.

>The idea that TV needs to be recorded for posterity has only started recently and not in time for the period you're nostalgic to
I want to watch a whole day of 2003 Cartoon Network and I can't fucking do it and it pisses me off.
>>
>>84019460
It's really bullshit isn't it? Especially with things like [as] and cartoon network, where I personally feel like the bumps and things of that nature contributed to the atmosphere a whole lot.
Like it's just not the same watching the shows by themselves.
>>
>>84019460
I'm sure someone's recorded early 2000s cartoon network at some point
>>
>>84011506
I know they played when ASA came on. Loved watching some anime with those chill as fuck bumps. AS needs to get off this current trend and go back to a more chill vibe. Remember the Do Not Stray bumps?
>>
>>84019460
2003 CN is scarce but on MySpleen there's plenty of full blocks from the late 90s and early 00s, many Fridays blocks from 2000 and 2001 and various other tidbits. More surface all the time.

Can't say I can recall them off the top of my head, but in terms of chill bumps I personally really enjoyed stuff like the traffic one. I don't know exactly why, but the certain mix of imagery and music most older [as] bumps had just made it comfy in a bit of a surreal way. Sometimes it could even be kind of spooky for no discernible reason.
Sort of like this shit.

Speak of Adult Swim....is there a reason why they replaced Inuyasha's original OP with that orchestral shit during recent airings?
>>
>>84019675
Recent? The only Inuyasha that aired recently was the newer seres The Final Act.

There's a TON of oldschool Cartoon Network broadcasts on myspleen too.

Mostly from the '96 - '01 era

Would uploading tapes onto youtube be good or would they get flagged for copyright?

Is it possible for us to just make a /co/ email address that we all know the login info for and send an invite to that?

I'm on board with this. I'd do it myself if i weren't currently driving.

If you guys can keep this bumped until tonight, I might be able to get the collective account set up when I get home.

I would think someone, somewhere out there would have recordings... just want to feel the vibes of summer 03 again. Those bumps were so nice. If someone had tapes I would buy them for a lot more than any sane person should.
>>
>>84032356
The problem is getting the tapes. I'm sure they exist somewhere, but it's difficult to find someone with them, costs money to ship them and convert to digital, and takes time to upload them.

Although I'm sure I have a tape of [as] somewhere in the basement. I used to timer record every school night on the same tape, circa Trigun.

I've got some myspleen invites if anyone still needs them as well. Pepper Ann complete was recently uploaded.
>>
>>84033345
People always taped it, but there's always the question of whether stuff got taped over or lost. The further we get from '01, the less the chance of actually getting these earlier tapes digitized and shared with the world. A lot of the tapers in the prime teenaged demographic from the start have moved on with their lives.
>>
>>84034373
I like to buy used tapes from ebay sometimes to see what is on them. No luck with anything yet doing that though. Mostly taped Hallmark channel movies.

From a purely historical perspective, i wish a lot more complete television broadcasts were archived. It's like an unfiltered slice of what culture was like at that exact moment in time.
>>
>>84033414
Would there be a way to upload myspleen-sourced stuff as well as any tape rips we acquire here on to youtube (or other easily accessible video site) and just have a document with links?
>>
>>84034646
If it's a video I don't see why you wouldn't be able to upload it
>>
>>84034579

>>
>>84034646
Yea you could. Youtube could take some down so some might need to be on alternate sites though.
>>
>>84034646
Would it also help to make the videos private just to us to avoid copyright strikes?
>>
>>84034733
Unlisted and even private ones can still get hit automatically
>>
Whoever is giving us their own tape rips should also upload to myspleen for posterity

But yeah we might be able to get away with a youtube channel of old CN/AS stuff (ie. Roughly '96 - '06 but later AS broadcasts up until the end of the decade would be cool too) and in the channel description encourage people with tapes to digitize them and send us a copy so we can preserve and share whatever is on there.
>>
>>84034801
What about people who don't have access to myspleen?
>>
>>84034779
I mean there are already full episodes ripped from tape of various AS floating around youtube as well as some channels uploading whole blocks of commercials etc. from older eras.

However, we might have to spring for another site. We'll see though.
>>
>>84034817

>>
>>84034202
You still have any?
>>
>>84034880

>>
>>84034817
That's why we could re-upload the videos themselves onto a more accessible, public platform.

Unless this is a huge "no-no" that's against myspleen rules or something. I don't see anything wrong with it.

What would be incredible is if we could happen to find some of the old Toonami interviews that the Toonami crew didn't keep the tapes for. There were some where they interviewed dubbing studios and stuff like that and nobody saved them.

Here is a tape I had of a colbert report episode from 2008. The tape was damaged so it isn't great quality and has some white flashing every few seconds. Also near the end someone went ondemand and looked through the guide for a few minutes. Also there is a weird al music video at the end. https://mega.nz/#!atdARB7K!JjvozDU6H13nIeM5Za-vVGtNHMNMy3IOlHq4pAICCsU

I found this old disc in a DVD stack that had a night's worth of adult swim original programming.

If I weren't in the process packing up my shit and traveling 500 miles, I'd put it up immediately
>>
>>84045399
No pressure. Whenever you can get it up is fine. Any guesses on the time period its from and when you could up it?

I actually went to the premiere of that at the Atlanta Fox theater

Great thread!

This is only kinda related, but I must ask. Does anyone remember that Fox Kids new Saturday morning lineup preview featuring the kids from Malcolm in the Middle?

I swear it was real. If anyone remembers it, at least reassure me I'm not just making it up.

No sadly. We got some more info about why nick isn't re-releasing it though semi-recently. http://lostmediawiki.com/The_Electric_Piper_(2003_Nickelodeon_TV_Movie)
>>
>>84052790
Whoa.... I never knew about this.
>>
>>84053361
There was also this

"More info from Bill. Just going to get right with it with the copy-paste.

"So the original impulse for the Electric Piper came from me first adapting the Pied Piper. I had written about a third of an original animated musical using my own style, coming straight from my heart. I was drawn to the subject because it has a parallel to the experience of the 60s, when an entire generation was drawn away from what their parents wanted for them and their parents' values by music. Rock n roll and the culture that surrounded it seduced away a generation. And the parents could be said to have lost their values and failed to "pay the piper". I pitched my Pied Piper to Hanna-Barbera and they loved it and were going to do it for sure, but then Fred torpedoed it because of other problems he was having at Turner.
>>
>>84053477

Later at Nick, the idea reemerged but the people in charge of producing (including Fred) didn't like my original music and wanted to hire a heavy hitter songwriter to do the music. Fred stood up for me and insisted they give me a chance. i knew they wanted hipper, more hit-like songs so I started emulating hit songs from the 60s, which went with the theme and was fun. I wasn't COPYING the songs though. I was writing a song LIKE Pleasant Valley Sunday by the Monkees or LIKE a Motown groove. But Fred said "Make it so it's an actual cop of those songs with just enough difference not to get sued." So I was kind of forced to start, well, plagiarizing. Our songs were nearly identical to the originals that inspired them.

But then the Nick Lawyers said "Whoa, you can't be that close to these songs. These are the biggest, richest M-Effers in showbiz and they will definitely sue." So we went back and UNcopied most of the songs. Took out recognizable intros and chords. This was kind of soul crushing to me. Not only was I NOT writing truly from my heart, I had gotten embroiled in a plagiarism thing and I have VERY high moral scruples about plagiarism. If I think I've come even remotely close to nicking someone's tune I freak and change it immediately. But, we did it, and meanwhile I was given 3 WEEKS to write the entire book and music and lyrics. This was due to the incompetence of Sherry Gunther, who is very high on my shit list right now."

Why did Cartoon Network stop doing things like this? This sort of thing really was what gave the network its personality.
>>
>>84055937
It's a lot of work for relatively little pay-off, I'd imagine.
>>
>>84037079
They did oldschool fridays back in 2008 and more recently regularly run select older shows at 4:00 AM in DVR Theater during late spring - early fall.

>regularly run select older shows at 4:00 AM in DVR Theater during late spring - early fall.
What are they airing now?
>>
>>84056989
They've been using the block for mainly airing reuruns of their Infomercial parodies (at one point, it was the same episode 5 nights in a row) as well as some new ones and episodes Off the Air, Fishcenter, and a few specials.
>>
>>84057085
>Off the Air
I've said this a lot, but they should really do an episode of that themed after Adult Swim itself.
Just put in a bunch of bumps and shit that Adult Swim has made over the years, surely there's enough to fill up 21 minutes or however long off the air usually is.

>>84057151
I'd love to see something where the recontexualize a lot of the old AS properties/stylistic elements/bumps

So far this year it's been Infomercials, Off the Air, You're Whole, and Fish center. Daytime Fighting League is set to appear in 2 weeks.
