What was up with a lot of cartoons in the 70s & 80s having anthropomorphic cats?
>>84005517
Cats are sexy.
>>84005517
The language of Catgirls crosses all times, countries, languages, and religions.
Some people think that Math is the universal language, when in reality, it is catgirls.
Female felines are very lovely.
>>84005517
I can point this fella
https://youtu.be/4NaQRyc6BkI
>>84005517
In Star Trek's case, they're using an animated format.
So you can be more creative with character ideas, instead of trying to use costumes that wouldn't look good.
>>84005517
The one on the Star Trek animated show was a call out to another sci fi franchise.
People like cats, and they're easy to anthropomorphise.
>>84005582
Egyptians confirm.
>>84005517
Because cat-people are an easy way to make aliens/humanoids in fantasy/science-fiction settings without having to put much effort to it. Also, cartoons are made by adults, and the lewdness of cat-women is present through history. The Egyptian goddess of violence and sex (and violent sex) was Sekhmet, a lion-headed lady.
>>84005728
Which would be?
The first human female /co/ character you can remember is made into an avatar of bast, complete with furshit makeover.
Is this an improvement y/n

Cats are the master race
>>84005517
If its not a human face you can't say its off model
>>84006415
I'm guessing the Kzin, from Larry Niven's books?
>>84007217
Considering their was an entire episode of Star Trek TAS featuring that race, yeah I'd say that's a safe guess buddy.
>>84007217
The Kzinti in TAS were a separate species, though according to background material they were related to the Caitians.
Wasn't there several sci-fi book series about humans having sex with cat aliens?
I think one is still ongoing today but I cant remember the name
>>84007136
Filmation had many animation problems but going off model ever was not one of them
>>84005517
Furries had more clout back in the day lad.
>>84005517
Cats are one of the more anthropomorphised species. Some of the oldest anthro depictions are cat people, including the oldest one ever. it probably owes to kitty-cat faces already being fairly flat, like our own. They're also expressive, and their agility has always impressed mankind.
When you get down to it, cats just make great animal-people material.
>>84007740
Also, TAS was cool and should be considered canon, especially if we're going to consider VOY and *shudder* ENT canon.
>>84007757
TAS was totally delightful, I don't understand people who don't want it canon
>>84007818
Probably because it was a cartoon, and did a few silly things. At least the Caitians caught on. And I believe ENT hinted at some TAS stuff, too. But then again, ENT was horrible.
>>84007757
>>84007818
TAS has actually been considered canon since 2007
>>84007875
It was pretty silly but that's what made it fun
>>84008109

>>84006161
The Greco-Roman god of love, Cupid, was a naked little boy. Coincidence?
>>84006161
>The Egyptian goddess of violence and sex (and violent sex) was Sekhmet, a lion-headed lady.
Where does "sex and violent sex" come from? I only ever read that she's a war goddess, but I've heard other anons mention sex. . Got any sources?
>>84009044
The Egyptian empire existed for around 3000 years. The roles of gods mutated over that time. It seems she took the role of love goddess for at least some time. Or it might have been Bastet. They did merge at some point, I think.
>>84009044
>>84009800
Egyptian mythology is the lewdest mythology. Even the Greek's pantheon of rapists can't compete.
Every Egyptian deity has at least a little "god/goddess of 'love'" in them.

>>84007217
Yup. Kzinti. And yeah, the Caitan are basically the Vulcan's to Kzinti's Romulans. Except as furry cat-people. Back then the whole sci-fi community pretty much revolved around riding Niven's dick. Not entirely undeserved, but it was still kind of weird.
>>84009967
Shit son, it's a TV show. There are going to be poorly written episodes. Enterprise is nothing but poorly written episodes.
>>84009800
>>84009864
on the contrary, the roles merged.
see, Bastet is a much later iteration of a few cat goddesses that became merged, including Mafdet, Tefnut and Sekhmet. Bastet also comes from the northern end of the kingdom(city of Bubastis), while the other goddesses hail from the south.
-Sekhmet is a lioness and the goddess of fury and war, she's an almost mindless bloodthirsty monster. She's a sun god, and has a solar disk over her head, so she's often associated with Hathor and Wadjet, who usually show up as lionesses too.
-Tefnut, who sometimes appears as a cat(appearance of gods greatly depends on the role they play in the indiividual myths), is the goddess of moisture, rain and cold air. She and her husband Shu are brothers and in one of the creation myths, thought as having been birthed from the sun's masturbation.
-Mafdet is a desert wild cat who protects against snakes and scorpions and who protects tombs from raiders, she also shows up next to executioners, and might be associated with justice.
-Bastet is the goddess of protecting households, much like the cat protects the crops, she brings safe and happy family life and fertility to women. She's began being a different aspect of Sekhmet but later on she became her "good" sister.
>>84009889
There should be a Wondy/Selina team up book where this happens and she's a pretty normal person so she wants it to un-happen
>>84010329
>She and her husband Shu are brothers and in one of the creation myths, thought as having been birthed from the sun's masturbation.
>>84010329
I remember there being also something about Sekhmet (ore one of the feline goddesses) being kept under control by having her be in a near-constant state of drunkenness.

Or, as he called it, Rishatra.
>>84010741
the Solar disk on top of her head means Sekhmet is the daughter of the sun god Ra, and is his "eye".
when Ra ruled over mortals for a long time the men grew resentful of him and conspired against him. To stop them, Ra sent his eye to punish them, and Sekhmet sprung out and began to slaughter Ra's enemies.
when Ra's enemies were vanquished Ra called Sekhmet to return, but she was lost in blood thirst and did not listen to him, and she almost put mankind to extinction. To recover her, Ra turned a lake into bright red wine and led Sekhmet towards it, and she, believing it was blood, drank it all, becoming drunk and mellow. She might have fucked someone and gotten pregnant of another god during that time, i can't find a source though.
Sekhmet's worshippers engaged in festivals each year and after battles with copious amounts of alcohol, dance and music to pacify the goddess.
>>84008498

i found this
>When Ra wanted to punish mankind for ignoring the Gods, he sent the Lioness-headed Goddess (a variation says that she was created by the fire of Ra as a weapon of vengeance against humans), becoming the "Eye of Ra".
>Once in land, the Goddess started a slaughter, killing men, women, and kids alike. Her blood thirst had no limits, and she almost extincted humankind. To stop her, the Gods tricked her. They flooded a field with Khakadi (a mix of beer and red color that looked like blood). The Goddess gorged herslef into it to drink, getting drunk and passing out.
>When she woke up, the first thing she saw was Ptah, falling in love with him almost instantly. From this union, it was born Nefertum (Healing) and Ma'art was re established. After this she was consider part of the Triad of Memphis, along with her partner Ptah and son Nefertem.
>>84013639
He's a fairly big name in oldschool science fiction. If you don't read science fiction, it's no wonder you've never heard of him. He's mostly known for the Ringworld series, which is... OK. When Halo was coming out he was still well known enough for reviewers to reference Ringworld directly.
But yeah, he was a big name in science fiction when TAS was running, which is in the 70's. That's kind of a long time ago. Science fiction is so niche, you need to actively seek out oldschool writers for their names to even mean anything to you.
>>84011167
That is a very cool story, brother!
>>84014014
I think you'd have to go into a book or something. The Egyptians had assloads of gods, often with overlapping functions and waxing and waning popularity. After all, they were around for 3000 years.
I can tell you, though, that a Roman statue of Sekhmet I saw last year had the hardest nipples I've ever seen on a statue. Of course, the Romans were into that kind of stuff.
>>84011387

>>84012641
damn, there's an oldie
>>84013379
Is this garak person supposed to be Data with bumps?
>>84014241
No, just an asshole hiding a past checkered by war crimes, with a wise, jaded demeanor earned by suffering betrayal after betrayal. He becomes more likeable after you find he has a daughter.
>>84011483
Fuck that....and fuck you too!
>>84014241
Garak is the most resourceful tailor in the universe. In fact, it's widely believed that he is some sort of ruthless spy, and not a single word he utters is truth. He was exiled from his homeworld, and occasionally helps out the main cast, as well as being homo-erotic towards Julian Bashir, the inexperienced, young doctor with a spy obsessions. And erstwhile ruler of Dorne, before his lover betrayed him.
The dude playing him also played Scorpio, the first Dirty Harry villain, and Pinhead in Hellraiser, so he brings plenty of ambiguity to the character.
So no, he's definitely not supposed to be the Data of the show. The honour probably goes to Odo. But in reality, Data's typical observations about mankind are generally divided between the various alien characters, given that DS9 is much less human-centric than TNG.

Argonians have a separate physiology and even their souls are fundamentally different, as they are hinted to be given by the hist and returned to the hist. So I think we can agree Argonians cannot breed with other races.
Khajiits are more muddled, as they're related to Bosmer, so who knows if there could be a union. I doubt it, though, for the same reason Argonians are probably incompatible. They're so fundamentally different, in this case with their morphology, that there can't be a blend.
As far as racial phylogeny goes, obviously there's SOME mixing otherwise bretons wouldn't exist, however there's a point to be made about them looking mostly man-like.
My personal takeaway is that beast races are generally incompatible and inter-race breeding generally leaves the offspring MOSTLY the mother's race.
Think more like a 80-20 split rather than a 50-50 split.

Glad this pissed off everyone else, I was fucking dissapointed in JJ as a director and a supposed "fan" of the series. He pulled the same shit with Star Wars, except instead of skimping on costumes he skimped on setting up the plot and the past before the plot. The destruction of the capital of the new republic has no weight because JJ was a cock guzzling faggot who still hates eps 1-3, to the point he was afraid of having world building and a story that set up what's been going on in the galaxy.
The fucker is so afraid of being seen as a nerd he wouldn't put effort into telling people the 30 years of history before the movie takes place. Or should I say, keeping in some scenes that would've made things at least a little clearer, I know he only had so much power, but he sure didn't bust anyone's balls for skimping on it, I can tell that much.
The sequel trilogy has no where to go but up, as far as I'm concerned, now that JJ is no longer involved, the fucking hack.

Yeah pretty much, sadly most people only give this shit a glance in comparison to our semi-obsessive ways.
They miss out on a lot I feel. Did you know there's a ton of people out there, here on 4chan too, that still get ass-ravaged by the prequels like its still 2006 or something? That's why TFA was a masturbatory mashup of OT themes and such, to appease the many fedora-lords of the web and casual fans who make up the majority, leaving the silent many who just wanted a good fucking movie that was a mix of depth-of-setting and solid action, adventure, and all that good shit.
You want good Star Wars, hit up Netflix and watch The Clone Wars, first couple seasons are slow, but it gets /good/. Let me tell you why: Georgie paid for all of it himself, at first it was around 1 mil an episode. By season 5? It was between 3-5 million an episode. He would give ideas, and let the crew and director, the Redeemer, Dave Filoni do the rest. By the end it had the best CGI I've ever seen, YouTube can't even match the Netflix quality.
Now that man and his team, minus George and a few others, went on to make Star Wars Rebels, also good, but hard to find online aside from Mega because Disney.
Go forth my wayward son.
>>84024407
>Yeah pretty much, sadly most people only give this shit a glance in comparison to our semi-obsessive ways.
It's not just being a Star Wars nerd. It was just a plainly bad movie, regardless of the franchise.
Biggest letdown has to be Finn being set up as a pacifist at first, shocked by the death of his comrades and enemies alike and them showing him gleefully cutting his former allies to bits with a laser sword. Just after he was telling everyone he wants to get as far away from the war as possible.
Fucking TRAITOR indeed.
>>84024407
I don't even like the prequels but I don't actively hate them. There's nice bits here and there but anakin's fall isn't very enthralling and lets be honest the political content puts you to sleep at times.
Clone Wars is suprisingly good though, even if I hate the CGI style mimicing Gendy's work. Shit does not translate well.
but yeah on it's own TFA is bad, if the next star wars movie doesn't have a heavier focus on story the movies are gonna be fucked.
don't get me started on EA getting a fucking exclusive contract to make video games for star wars.

>>84024008
We dont know that.
Consider that two Ohmes-Raht, the most humanoid Khajiit there is, can conceive a breed such as Alfiq depending entirely of the moon phase just fine. If a human male was compatible with a khajiit Ohmes but made her pregnant during said moon phase would his son still be a literal housecat with magic, ignoring his human seed? Is the compatibility depending on the moons like ovular phases? If so, how would khajiit wombs change so much over their cycle and still be fertile to all kinds of khajiit during any of them?
Their reproduction is entirely magical in nature, Azura made it so. They are absolutely not biologically sensible. The only way to conceive with a khajiit would be to fiddle with the same potent magic as hers, so you better be ready to make deals with Daedra.

>>84009044
It's all a bit mixed, because ancient divinities mutated over time as their worshipping cultures changed and evolved. I readt in a mythology book that Ra turned Hathor into Sekhmet/created a new goddess called Sekhmet (it isn't really clear, seriously) and sent her to Earth to punish mankind. Horus consulted both his mom Isis and wise Thoth for a way to stop her, and they told him to mix blood and beer in a lake to lure her. When Sekhmet passed by the lake she drank it whole, getting drunk and horny; then she saw Ptah and snu snued him. Thus,Sekhmet turned into the loving goddess Bastet.
There's a lot to interpretate from that, but that's the myth as I read it.

I think it's a metaphor of how the civilized northern Egypt brought greatness to the southern region through war, trade and, ultimately, marriage.

Just because they're similar does not mean there would be a blend, I would not be surprised if they can't breed with other races simply because it would muddle their delicate morphology up.

JJTrek sucks massive amounts of dicks, though. The characters are pop culture stereotypes. I mean, Kirk didn't even fuck that many aliens. He's just a sort of Space James Bond, because it was 60's television. Bones pulls just as much tail, and Spock certainly did so in real life. DS9 even makes the joke that Dax lusts after Spock, fucked McCoy, but that the men are obsessed with Kirk.
>>84017755
That's budget restraints, though. It became part of the franchise, but as soon as they could upgrade Klingons, they did. M'Ress, Arex, and others from the animated show are properly alien because they could finally do it. Pic related is the cast from the episode The Jihad.
Lizard guy was the best one.
>>84024182
JJ is just a guy who's good at making a safe, dumb product while making it appear that he's doing something more than that.
I haven't seen the new Star Wars, but the new Trek was just an action movie with a few Star Trek props and names. He does nothing daring. Showing Kirk fuck inhuman aliens would be daring.
But it's how things go in this modern day and age. The hyperoffended generation will misinterpret any attempt at being daring that they don't like as a personal offense. I was watching a review of The Child -the TNG episode- the other day. And it's a crap episode. Troi gets a weird space baby. But the reviewer goes on and fucking on about how it's sexist, and offensive to women, and RAPE. I mean, it's a sci-fi immaculate conception, you douchenozzle. The alien force did not hold her down and have sex with her. It put a baby in her. And if it was a good episode, there would be none of the same moaning.
In short, these people have made it easier to just make a safe, mediocre product that foregoes difficult subjects and representation of people who are not the norm, because it reduces the risk of pissing people off. Just look at the difference between TOS Uhura and JJ Uhura: The first is an African woman who speaks Swahili, the latter is black.
>>84027322
>It put a baby in her.
Well that's still kinda fucked up innit. What it basically boils down to is infecting her with a bigass parasite.
But the thing is that there's a difference between something fucked up happening in fiction and that piece of fiction being fucked up.
>>84027410
Yeah, pretty much. Point is, he wanted to make more out of it than it just being a bad episode. The same reviewer (Chuck of SFDebris) does that occasionally. It's kind of annoying, and it showcases why executives are risk-averse.
Same shit with claiming the character of Chakotay is racist. He really isn't. Ignorant as fuck, yes. But trying to make an American Indian character and getting it wrong because you're incompetent isn't the same as making an American Indian character specifically to misrepresent them.
I get the impression people grab for these big blanket statement insults because they've been taught that their outrage is more meaningful when it's inservice of a big group of people, rather than just your, personal opinion.
>>84027322
remember that time in TNG where the crew firced an advanced, peaceful, but xenophobic civilization of clones to basically end thwir entire way of life and integrate with primitive irish stereotypes?
oh hey, how about that time Riker aborted his clones because FUCK YOU?
>>84027597
Yeah, if there was one genuinely offensive episode of TNG, that one was it. Not just because of the stereotypes, but because of the implied morality (or lack thereof).
>>84008731
No he wasnt.
>>84027610
honestly it was tone deaf in a lot of ways. how about that time picard and company murdered the entire high command because they were corrupted by alien parasites? really tge first season was really weak. TNG doesn't pick up till...what? I wanna say 3rd season.
>>84027659
Yeah, first season was beardless Riker time, second season decided to star Pulaski, then things settled down for the third season and it kicked into high gear for Yesterday's Enterprise and Best of Both Worlds Part 1.
>>84027659
Conspiracy was a weird episode, but it was still a strong episode. The overt horror tropes are kind of out of place, though. But killing the high command because they are irrevocably infected with a bunch of parasites isn't weird on its own, unless you know they can be saved. But the episode had every indication of these guys being quite unstoppable.
It's kind of obvious they were set up as the next big threat. There's that episode where the guy who is later infected subjects the Enterprise to an internal security audit, which is unusually strict. It's to determine if the Enterprise has been taken over. The plot point about the aliens getting a message off was probably meant to set up future episodes, too.
But instead they came up with the Borg, and a good thing they did so, too. They probably realized that the brainbugs were already cheesy, oldschool sci-fi by then, and wisely dropped them. Stargate managed to make it work, but only because they fully embraced exactly how cheesy they were. Exploding skulls and dudes eating worms was fun for one episode, but I wouldn't want to watch an entire show of that.
Also notable for being the one graphic death scene in Star Trek. Unless you count that transported accident in the first movie, because that shit was fucking brutal.
But yes, TNG took a while to come into stride. Season one and tow have their share of strong episodes, though. And bad episodes with good moments. But season 2 is much stronger than season 1. It has Riker parking a Klingon's head into a bulkhead, and Measure of a Man, one of TNG's best episodes. Season 2 does what season 1 failed to do: Set up a lot of standards and tropes for later seasons. Season 2 is really TNG, while season 1 is TOS+.
>>84027659
Don't forget Justice, where they were willing to leave a member of their crew to die for no reason but "muh prime directive", even though he wasn't a member of the alien society and it clearly wasn't the type of society they had to observe in secret.
How could telling them "we have diplomatic immunity, we will punish our own kind as we see fit, and if you don't like it we will leave and never return" have altered the development of an alien society that already knows the Federation exists? It literally just seems like Picard wanted an excuse to get rid of Wesley, which I guess is understandable but not very heroic of him.
>>84027815
>implying they shouldn't have let them execute Wesley
But yes, that was a stupid episode. It's one of those TOS scripts that TOS would have handled far better.

I agree. I came across it and was shocked at how much I liked the episode. It hit all my buttons I suppose. It just kinda surprises me that Conspiracy is what's normally talked about when I think that Time Squared was a better episode and considerably darker considering that throughout the episode you're made aware that you're slowly creeping towards something terrible and you can't stop.

>>84028166
I haven't seen a lot of people mention Conspiracy as a good example of a dark episode, really. A lot of people who go "whatever happened with that foreshadowing", though. But that's easy. They replaced these guys with the Borg.
Star Trek can be particularly strong when it comes to episodes that explore the central characters, such as Time Squared. And it can hit the proper sci-fi horror, too. Though I'm hard pressed to think of one that approaches the uneasiness of Time Squared. Perhaps Cause and Effect, which is also a great episode.

He set the films he created as the canon. This includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These stories are the immovable objects of Star Wars history, the characters and events to which all other tales must align.

I never really liked The Game. It seemed like pointless anti-vidya hysteria, and it was a Wesley episode to boot. It's a bit of a meme at this point, but Wesley was a genuinely terrible character.
The central theme is solid enough, I suppose. There's always some good paranoia to be had in the rest of the world turning against you. Speaking of that, the DS9 episode Whispers is en example of this trope done very well.
TNG episode The Wounded is also very good, thought unrelated. It sows the seed for Deep Space 9, and has all the hallmarks of what made DS9 good. It's dark, ambigious, and about the strengths and failures of a person's character. It features O'Brien and Marc Alaimo as a prototype of Gul Dukat in prominent roles. It's also quite tense and uneasy.
>>84028502
Clone Wars(2003) and The Clone Wars aren't part of the same canon. While the cgi show is canon, the 2003 one is not.
>>84028619
I used to feel bad for Wil Wheaton because even if Wesley is a horrible character he put a lot of effort into the role. Then Wheaton started clumsily trying his efforts at being a social crusader and he apparently thinks being a D&D player makes him a hard core nerd. So on top of wesley just plain being fucking insufferable and kind of clashing with the tone of 'Trek in general you have his actor who is a complete putz.
Favorite Star Wars EU bit, no I don't give a fuck what's canon any more.
KOTOR 1 and 2, specifically the Mandalorian War, Cathar Exodus, Reven, The Exile, and Kreia's Examination of the Force and her attempt to rebel against the Force and it's apparent agenda for her.

Wheaton isn't acting like a very likeable individual. He did get referenced in The Lazy DM's Guide, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, there. >>84028713
Their anti-drugs episode was Symbiosis, which is about two pre-warp cultures (season 1 TNG where they still messed around with those) where one is playing drug dealer to the other. It's a decent enough episode, though. The anti-drug message is overshadowed by some good diplomatic stuff, and it's basically Picard in his element as an arbitrator. You can really see the difference between having Wesley carry an episode with a braindead message, and Picard.

But yes, Wheaton represents the most annoying aspect of "I'm such a nerd"-culture. Kind of ironic, too, given that he played a character nerds hated. And they hated him because he was the Star Trek equivalent of a trust fun baby.
It's pretty obvious Wesley was a Roddenberry insert, because he's exactly the way some elderly people THINK they were as children.

I tried to run one but it fell apart. Did pretty well all things considered. Our GM started us off with Mongoose traveller, swapped over to 2ndEd and then fucked off. So I took up GMing duties and life destroyed the game. Still we did half decently I think.
anyways my main problem with wheaton is I fucking hate D&D comfort zone babbies. By all means play a game you enjoy but if I go to the fucking effort of buying game books and setting up a game you can at least give me the courtesy of trying to learn the system well enough to make a character and skimming the fluff. But no, I'll fucking get "but that's not D&D, why don't we play D&D again! You could get a new setting like greyhawk or just make up a new one!" It's like being in an animation club with one fucker who refuses to watch anything that's not from a certain studio or age of animation.
THERE IS AN ENTIRE GODDAMN MARKET OF BOARDGAMES AND TABLETOP RPGS AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST FUCKING PROBLEMS WE HAVE IS WRESLTING NEWBIES OFF THE MURDERHOBO SWEETTEAT.
WE DO NOT NEED PEOPLE ADVOCATING FOR PLAYING D&D.
>>84028967
Wheaton is a board game fan first and foremost. Everyone sperging in this thread about 'muh rpgs' are just as much faux gamers as they think he is. If anything board game faggots are a purer form of nerd autism than rpgers. They're only a step or two above stamp collectors.
>>84029210
The biggest problem with D&D is the implied attitude. I had that a lot with my players. The idea that "we have to act this way, because that's how you act in D&D".
For some reason Gygax's punishing dungeon runs, which they did for fun next to regular games, came to represent the dominant attitude about D&D.
>>84029293
boatd games can be fun in a social context but they're pretty one note. It's not even a matter of being faux nerdy.
it's being the kind of nerd that other nerds consider socially toxic and detrimental to the hobby.
>>84029293
I don't know, from a non-tabletop gaming perspective it sounds annoying to have a group of newbies cling to only one part of a vast library of games to play.
>how about some Vampire the Masquerade-
>no D&D, no play
As for Whedon, I'd say he's a Twitter mouthpiece and former child star first and foremost: he's the Olivia Munn of the tabletop fandom, a recognizable face that claims to be into a scene but who (seems to) only scratch the surface of the massive depths they try to integrate themselves into.
>>84029399
yeah the character grinders were meant to be competitions and hit you did in the off time but took over the game for a pretty big part of the 80s and 90s. I had to be weaned off murderhoboery. D&D even to this day PROUDLY shows off it's roots as a war game so all the focus is on combat a lot of the time.
shit gets boring after awhile. maybe I want to run a kingdom instead of playing vermin exterminator.
>>84025516
Thanks.
>>84029453
I do like the wide availability of rules. It's pretty easy to go back to the rulebook and see exactly how something is supposed to act. I don't begrudge inflated combat rules, either. Combat takes up a lot of the time in a game, so it's good that there's a relative amount of variety. It just gets boring when you have a DM who insists on doing the same shit over and over again. Or one who falls for the "DM vs. players" meme.
PF does have some rules for running a kingdom, though.

>>84029590
kingmaker is kind of bland. and one note honestly. Now D&D has five editions, all with their strengths and weaknesses and pathfinder is no slouch. the problem is less d&d being bad and more it fostering bad behaviours you have to break players of. it's fucking infuriating.
>>84029689
Yeah, D&D is a very specific kind of game, but people take it as representative of the entire hobby. Kind of likes superhero comics, really.
For instance, take the whole "class = personality" that goes on in D&D. That's pretty much exclusive to it, and games like it.
>Catgirl thread
>>84005517
Every bloody science fiction setting does a cat race, anthro space cats are a science fiction meme, just like space Jamaicans in cyberpunk.
Larry Niven wrote his Known Space series where his lovable aggressor race were cat people and everyone else copied the revived idea.
Shit, Star Trek writers went as far as to just include the Kzin directly into their canon and only later renamed them Caitian and just bullshitted that they're an offshoot race of the Kzin. Even the Japanese did with Ctarl-ctarl from the Outlaw Star.
Other examples include, the Moreu race, the Wraith Raiders, the Hani race, the Aslan, the Kilrathi, the Puma twins, the Katta, etc. Even 40k has cat people.
>>84029983
Space Jamacians actually have a point, though. The Rastafari movement associated with Jamaica decries the decadence and oppression of Babylon (most materialistic Western society), and it's harder to show a more negative interpretation of material excess and authority than most cyberpunk. The Jamaicans are there as a poignant philosophical counterpoint.
Now, space cats don't have that kind of justification. Someone thought it was a good idea, and people jumped on it, either to jerk off or to fill in some alien slots.
>>84029983

Aside from anthropomorphisation being something that people just... do. It's not just space cats. It's animal people everywhere, even in ancient cultures that did not intermingle with other cultures.

Admittedly, Gygax had some pretty unpleasant/that guy-ish attitudes and methods in his regular game. People who play paladins as merciless smite bots are playing as he intended, for example. He also tended to be kind of adversarial as a DM, and set up a lot of the shitty fantasy cliches we have today, like all dwarves being gimli or really mechanical, systemized magic. I've always said Gygax was the Freud of ttrpgs.
