Geoff ruined DC. New characters and new ideas? Don't give them any thought, don't get connected to them, don't even bother reading those stories, because it'll all be replaced with the old stuff in the next reboot.

New ideas are not wanted here. Thanks, Geoff.

BURBANK, CA – DC’s REBIRTH line-wide relaunch continues to be a huge hit with fans, as more issues from the June title lineup head into their second printings. The following new issue #1’s will be going back to print: AQUAMAN #1 (Dan Abnett, Brad Walker, Andrew Hennessey, Gabe Eltaeb), THE FLASH #1 (Joshua Williamson, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ivan Plascencia), WONDER WOMAN #1 (Greg Rucka, Liam Sharp, Laura Martin) and legacy numbered ACTION COMICS #958 (Dan Jurgens, Patrick Zircher, Ulises Arreola) and DETECTIVE COMICS #935 (James Tynion IV, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas).

Spinning out of Geoff Johns’ DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1, these titles continue this new universe of storytelling featuring the most iconic characters in comics and the best writers and artists in the business. More titles are scheduled to debut now through October, with many of them appearing on shelves twice monthly, so fans will continue to get more of the excitement and action that’s made DC a fan-favorite for more than 80 years.

Each second printing will feature the comic’s original cover art but will replace the blue curtain image with recolored REBIRTH banners at the top. These issues will arrive in comic retail stores July 20 at the original $2.99 cover price.

>>
>>83967547

Did I bash Marvel anywhere? You seem to be the touchy one.

It's a general state of industry. Marvel is relevant to that.

Very rarely does a new and fresh idea take off and sell. For every one Kamala you have like ten failed attempts. That's the sad truth.
>>
>>
>>83967623
New Characters ? those would not sell nowadays without a movie backing them or having a legacy, if Miss marvel was a new hero she would have tanked already
>>
>>83967610
You don't have new ideas by throwing out the old stuff. You have new ideas by taking the old stuff and building on it.
Remember when DC took their neglected magical stuff and built the Endless and Swamp Thing and Hellblazer and Lucifer? None of that required throwing out Dr. Fate or Etrigan.
>>
Rebirth isn't even a reboot.

It's barely even a continuity patch. The vast majority of titles are literally going directly from previous story beats that were established in the DCYou. Rebirth is simply a course correct that's re-establishing characters people missed, realigning the tone with what people expect, and getting back to basics.

The 10 years were stolen line is simply meant to explain in a meta sense why the New 52 is different from the pre-boot universe. They're not planning on bringing back those 10 years.
>>
>>83967738
>None of that required throwing out Dr. Fate or Etrigan
Yeah sure but when was the last both of those became relevant ? the only reason those worked was because Vertigo was a great thing back in the day, if John was done today he would last 12 issues max
>>
>>83967776
He is done today. Last series lasted like 15 issues and is getting relaunched for rebirth

>>
>>83967805

>>
>>83967805

That's not what he meant or said.

If Hellblazer was a brand new debuting title today it wouldn't last 12 issues.

And that is entirely correct. So few new ideas and characters can take off.

Even new concepts with older obscure characters struggle.

A strong book like Omega Men or Midnighter stands no chance because peopled are more likely to flock to a mediocre book like Vendetti's Flash or even a shitty book like Finch's Wonder Woman because those name brands feel safe and recognizable to them.

Then maybe they should find a gap in the market that people actually want. People wanted dark, deconstructive edgy stuff in the 90s because unless you were a Russian or a Rwandan those times were pretty good.
Mass media's refusal to acknowledge that if we want depressing shit about mass murdering psychos and corrupt politicians we can just turn on the fucking news and that we look to our entertainment mediums to escape that is killing them.

Moore's Swamp Thing sold quite well back in the day. Spinning off of it was a recipe for success. There were plenty of new characters and books that failed to gain traction back then too, I'm not sure why you're romanticizing this.

DC You had a book for everyone. Starfire was a sitcom, Grayson was a spythriller, Batgirl was a lighthearted shoujo series, Hellblazer was horror, Catwoman was a crime thriller, Robin was a classic Adventure book.

It's why it's so upsetting to that it failed. There was a book for everyone. It was fresh and new and exciting and while the core books were weaker the C-listers and new titles were mostly pretty strong with a few exceptions.

The comic industry won't really be able to survive if new ideas and titles aren't accepted by their autistic reader base.

Both of which where right in the way he meant. Dick was in a shitty book where he got raped and was revealed he fucked babs after he found out about her accident and then the next morning invited her to his wedding with starfire.

And countdown wasnt as bad editorially which was what he meant
>>
>>83968254

Because he tends to be very open and honest about his opinions.

And he tells the truth a lot too.

Like when he said something about DC not catering to woman because surveys show they don't really actually buy comics.

And then there's the Stephanie Brown thing, or the infamous way he treated Peter David, Rucka, and Waid.
>>
>>83968254
He mismanaged DC properties, scared off tons of talent, failed to live up to his own vision of consolidating the DCU (twice) and let DC's marketspace get swooped up by other companies

David I believe was because he personally canceled Young Justice despite being a fan favorite that was a strong seller because, to Dan, it was everything wrong with how the DC line was at that point
>>
Sorry, I missed whatever announcement was supposed to happen today, what's the verdict?

Also is Rebirth supposed to fix all the continuity and rebooting stuff? Haven't touched DC since Flashpoint.
>>
>>83968430

He did. And he's trying to fix quite a few burned bridges.

With Peter David it was cancelling Young Justice and talking shit about the series without knowing anything about it. Plus calling it a flop despite doing exactly what it was created to do.

With Waid it was a pile of stuff. For one Waid is never working with Harris, but there was what he was told second hand regarding 52, making Bart Flash despite his protests (Which lead to his "Bart's already dead" quote upon being told they were going to kill him and bring Wally back) and then giving him Flash back only for it to be a filler to the brand hold over until Flash Rebirth was ready. That's probably not even everything.

Young Animal is still around, the Hanna-Barbera relaunch is pretty risky, almost all of the dudes who wrote the best DCYou books are sticking around and got promotions. The majority of Rebirth is springing out of plot points that were born in DCYou. Don't know what you want here dude.
>>
>>83968492

It wasn't a strong seller, it was just selling alright.

Impulse, Superboy, Robin, and Young Justice were being published as titles readers could share with their kids and even if DC took a lose the entire concept was that kids would grow up to read more titles. Robin was selling the best, followed by Young Justice. Superboy and Impulse were selling worse but Young Justice was cancelled first and DiDio insulted the book and especially hated Slobo despite not really knowing much about it.

Pretty sure it was one of the, if not the, first things he did when he became Executive Editor.
>>
>>83968544
Yeah he's talked about that, and pretty much the animation side of Warner has almost nothing to do with DC's publishing side.

Which is why McDuffie was such a resource for DCAU and got shat on under DC Comics

If anything it's just running with the "story > continuity" mindset from DCYou. Creators like Johns wanted to play around with aspects of the DCU from before the New 52 so they're accounting for that within the setting as a whole now.

While the Flash issue for sure looked back on it, it didn't have the exact same composition. So who's going to be the Wonder Woman in the Damien Mini-Clark shindig
>>
>>83970566
He's getting redeemed in Earth One.
And now Clayface sort of has a daughter that he can try to bond with, if anyone wants to pick that thread up.
>>
>>83970671
I like the way you think.
>>
>>83970674
>sort of has a daughter
>sort of
His wife's daughter?
>>
>>83968530
>>mfw The New 52 & DCYou actually tried to have some genre diversity, and now people are praising DC for being risk-avoidant as hell

"Genre diversity" was never the problem with Nu52, and I'd gladly re-welcome it. The problem was that their superhero universe, their bread and butter, got turned to SHIT. It was SHIT because it was DIFFERENT and DIFFERENT is objectively BAD.
>>
>>83967202
so how plausible is it that mr oz is ozymandias? how does it even makes sense?
>>
>>83970716
There is no wife.
Remember that episode of BTAS where he split off part of himself to make a girl that Tim fell head over heels with and then he reabsorbed her and it was the saddest thing ever?

Something like that happened in Gotham Academy, except the gang puled her back out.
>>
>>83970803
About as plausible as Rorschach being the Joker's true identity.

And by that I mean, extremely.
>>
>>83970803
It's so obvious I'll be shocked if it is.
Who else could it be?
>>
>>83970845
Sheeeit.
I really should catch up with Gotham Academy
>>
>>83969045
snyder already (probably) put watchmen easter eggs in MoS and BvS, but legally speaking, can WarnerBros use manhattan in the DCEU films?
>>
>>83970566

Because of the later Batwoman stuff.

Which I admit I have not read yet.

>>83970671

I don't know but I hope it's a third shota.
>>
>>83970803

Mr. Oz seems to be a black man though.

I can't entirely tell.
>>
>>83966831
Not that anon but you can't blame him for wanting best girl. Also fuck off asshole.
>>
>>83970720
>DIFFERENT is objectively BAD
This is why BvS tanked
>>
>>83968528
David returned to Marvel after that, but later than Waid.
>>
>>83971244

Also because "bad" is objectively bad too.
>>
>>83966494
Would it kill them to include a stretchy dude in the group shot? Elongated Man came back and I think Plas is around too.

They have fucking Deathstroke for god's sake.
>>
>>83966494
people are going come in here and say he's DC's Bendis and sincerely believe that
>>
>>83967763
>They're not planning on bringing back those 10 years.

They will. Or this will be another failure.
>>
>>83971547
Deathstroke has a book.
>>
>>83970266
This.

Where is he post rebirth?
>>
>>83967807

He surpassed Barry.
>>
>>83967807
He was more popular than Barry.

Literally that was the reason. DC decided it'd be bad for Barry's popularity if Wally was around because people liked him more and would expect him to become the main Flash again.
>>
>>83966494
He didn't save it so much as he just made it suck slightly less.
>>
>>83967574
There's no reason to believe new characters don't sell. DC and Marvel never even try new characters anymore, and historically new characters have sold VERY well.
>>
Crazy theory time, guys!

>>83967492
I think something really interesting about this is Barry basically remembers the New 52 version of Wally if there was a New 52 version. He just thinks he forgot about Wally around the same time everyone forgot the Titans

But Wally corrects him here

>>83967513
Wally never disappeared with the Teen Titans. Because the Teen Titans didn't disappear -- they were just forgotten (by their own doing). What happened to the Titans wouldn't have gotten Wally stuck in the Speed Force -- that was Flashpoint where he died. It's like the universe is course correcting itself to fit this narrative and Wally's an aberration it's working around.

It shows up in Flash Rebirth, too, when Barry talks about the Speed Force trying to get him to remember stuff from the old timeline before Wally shows up. To help him remember Wally -- it doesn't make him remember stuff about this timeline because Wally never existed!

This is me making a shot in the dark but I think the Speed Force is actively, in some way, combating the changes to the universe and Wally's its hail mary. That's why it sticks the Watchmen badge in Batman's wall -- that wasn't Wally's doing. The Speed Force is pushing back against something that's altered it (which is why the New 52 Speed Force is WAY different from the one Wally's experiencing in this very book).

Obviously the antagonist here is Manhattan, but The Speed Force seems to be playing into this in a way it never really has before in a major event. Usually it just sticks to being the mysterious force The Flash gets his powers from, but I don't think it's ever actively, almost consciously done stuff like this before. I guess if you need something to stand up to Manhattan going godmode the Speed Force is a good place to start.
>>
>>83968528
Yeah Waid's too obstinate to ever put anything aside.

It's a shame, now would actually be the perfect time to bring him back and start up that Wally West/Flash Family stuff he wanted to do that they undercut him on. He's the only dude I'd 100% always trust to write Wally well.
>>
>>83974705

The only times he ever talked about Wally on Twitter are when he gave his blessings to Keiynan and when he stated Wally should keep The Flash name after Rebirth.

I feel really sorry for him because he clearly wants to write The Flash again and he's the only one many people can trust.
>>
>>83967763
$0.10 was just deposited in your Warner Bros. account.
>>
>>83974875
He still has that one Wally West story he always wanted to tell -- why he hates time travel. Man this would be the perfect time for that story. Would tie nicely into him returning after Flashpoint.
>>
>>83969257
He doesn't though
>>
>>83974984

He's been teasing it since 90s, I'll be really sad if we never get story in the end.

Rucka is back and Waid's Marvel work are mediocre, anything can happen, r-right?
>>
>>83975128
No. Rucka doesn't hate Harras like Waid does. Waid has said a lot of terrible (and factual) shit about Harras that precludes the company from ever hiring him again until Harras leaves AND someone who's not his friend is in charge.

Fat chance.
>>
>>83975239
Said it before but Johns is basically acting as EIC right now. I don't think Harras has any power. It might be possible.
>>
>>83970720

The comics were fucking bad, umkay? They were bad.

I mean, genre diversity is all good and nice, but when you put literally whos to work on these diverse books who manage to only shit out mediocre to bad stories, then what's the fucking point? I mean, does anyone here regard Blackhawks, Men of War or shit as some gems? Fuck no.

The only good superhero books that were good, other than Morrison's shit, were the ones that were in production before the reboot and managed to retain most of their previous continuity.
>>
>>83966525
Fucking amazing, well put.
