I think that part of the thing with Johann is that he IS dead and a whole fucking overarching theme of the entire goddamn thing is that, realistically, you should have as little to do with the dead as you can, even if they mean well, that's kind of shown again and again and again.
There is no happy ending there because we hit the end of Johann's book and carried on reading; we closed it, read the surface of the table and now we're on the floor, up against the skirting-board. There's fluff down here.
