Some of their staff may have worked on the first Avatar, but I think what happened was Mir did some of the episodes throughout Books 1 and 2 intermittently with other studios, then did Books 3 and 4 full time. There's a shot in the Korra intro of the original Avatar cast in the new style and they look different. A lot longer in the face and realistically proportioned.

The real explanation is that the Lions are capable of wormholes and self propulsion, but were meant/design to require someone to actually do most things most of the time. They'll do this stuff when absolutely required, but usually the pilot has to be insync enough to manually do it, which none of our heroes are trained enough to access yet. The ship also seems to "recharge" directly from Allura, which goes along with Haggar detecting a "resurgence of Altaen energy." Probably quintessence bullshit again. Voltron seems to be largely self powered, probably what makes it so attractive.
