Give the second episode a try, at the very least. A lot of the weaker comedy bits, the fart joke, the barfing, is completely dropped in exchange for much better character comedy in that episode.
Outside of that? The speech Shiro gives that makes them form Voltron the first time is pretty much the tone of the next 10 episodes. The comedy bits are very good, but the drama and more serious beats tend to be pretty close to my upper cheese limits. Shiro gets some increasingly more tense PTSD stuff as the show goes on, but overall it's still pretty much "power of bonds and friendship." I don't find that bad, but it is what it is.

I really had a problem with Hunk, Lance, and especially Coran being "LOL laugh at the idiot" characters of different stripes. I understand having one goofy character in a show with a larger cast, but three is WAY to much.

Hunk grows out of being the fat stooge after awhile (Even Episode 2 kinda runs that a bit too much into the ground). His arc dominates the middle bit of the current episodes. He still does comedy stuff, but it's much more of "only guy weirded out by what's going on." Especially once they remember he's the mechanics guy.
Coran never really stops being a wacky alien, but he's never really incompetent except for one or two gags about his physical ability, I think.
Lance, as mentioned, doesn't change much but we get more of him. He and Keith get the short of end of the character stick, but Lance has moments of genuine thought and competence amidst his showboating boisterous nature. He's basically Sokka.

He's probably being set up to have some plot stuff in the future. Remember, he was feeling the mystical Lion juju before anyone else, enough to know when Shiro and the aliens would be arriving. It wasn't even his Lion. He also got a significant scene with the Quintessence (though it may just be to highlight that macguffin's properties than anything with him). He also got to go 1 vs 1 the final boss and though he got his ass handed to him by a guy on foot with a sword and gun, he unlocked some shonen power and the final boss complimented him.
Given the entire cast got split up in the cliff hanger, we'll probably see more individual development for everyone next batch. They could've really done more with him in the first 11 episodes, though. So far it's a lot of set up and only some follow through.
I've only watched the first three episodes but I'm impressed with the production values. They obviously aren't as lavish as Legend of Korra but the animation is pretty damn good and the soundtrack is phenomenal.

It probably wasn't sent away because they had no Paladin for it anymore, either with them thinking the Altaen pilot for it had been KIA somewhere or it just being Zarkon before the war.
Zarkon actually just being Zarkon who was once a Galra Paladin until he decided he'd rather fuck shit up as an Emperor still fits with what we know history-wise: Zarkon could've gone rogue but couldn't take Voltron with him, but could take his alien-name-I-can't-recall-weapon. Without him, Voltron can't be formed unless a new pilot is found and Allura's father decides to just scatter them rather than try. This all happens quick enough to not be able to form a a new weapon thingie. We also know Allura spent time in Galra space before the war, though I guess we don't know Altaen life cycles. They seem to be rather long, as Coran saw the 600 year old castle built as a kid. This could mean they were close enough or part of some Galactic community that had a variety of aliens able to become Paladins. They don't particularly seem askance that aliens are piloting Voltron when they wake up, only at their inexperience.
I still admit it doesn't really fit with the way Allura and Coran act. You'd expect a bit different kind of anger if they knew it was the old Black Paladin. I just find it a more interesting idea that they had different Alien Paladins and Galra used to be one of them until they went to war. Rather than him secretly being an Altaen.

But even then, you have Ouran High for specifically crossdressing. Tamaki is a bit too sucessful to be similar to Lance, but given what we've seen how how Pidge likes to act, Haruhi and Pidge are cut from the same bird feathers. Full Metal Panic and Inuyasha have their tomboys in the relationships a bit too old and with too big an inheritance of land to fit the same aesthetic as Pidge, but the idea is the same.

It's pretty crazy though it's no killing rule gave the Voltron some better arcs over Go-Lion. In Go-Lion Sven dies in episode two and his twin brother shows up later, in Voltron Sven is poisoned and gets shipped off to a hospital planet, on the way his ship is intercepted and he's kidnapped and taken to a slave planet. From there he slowly recovers in the mines and then forms a revolution, and frees all the slaves and returns home.

The way I interpreted everything is that he was the original Black Paladin, he was kicked out for some reason (probably lust for power) and possibly replaced if the lions weren't just left unused, then he started the war to get what he feels belongs to him. I don't think Zarkon abandoned his lion, I think he was separated from it but managed to keep the weapon, which basically takes the place of the keys in the original and merely activate additional weaponry in either the lion or Voltron. The reason I say that is Zarkon obviously still wants the lions, and I'd hazard not just so they can't be used against him since the only reason to separate them was so Zarkan could use them himself. They'll accept non Altean pilots, obviously, so he could eventually find others who can form the bond with them.
Sure they kept the black lion at the castle but considering the king would have no lesser desire to protect his daughter than the lion so that makes sense. He just put them together, and the black lion supposedly wouldn't release until the others were gathered anyway.
This really is two-fold. Zarkon wants his lion back, but as long as he has the weapon the lion and Voltron aren't at full functionality, not that we know what the weapon linked with the lion is capable of.
I'm not even sure they CAN build a new weapon. The king was the brains behind the construction of Voltron and so presumably the weapons as well, however given the emphasis on Altean technology pushing the boundaries beyond even their known science into mystical properties I'm not even sure they can duplicate it. When you start going magical/pseudo magical, well, logic takes a hefty shot to the balls. It's possible something went into the creation that isn't possible, or is too dangerous, or only the king could do - or maybe Allura too similar to the ritual to heal the Balmera. At any rate there is certainly a meta-mystical connection between the pilot, the weapon, and the lion.
The way the lion chooses the pilot, calls to them, bonds with them, I wonder if maybe the black lion didn't reject Zarkon when he went evil. Though with Zarkon's witchy-poo I'm sure they can make it submit even if it did.

I can see them doing the whole not knowing who he really is, thing. It'd fit with how convenient it was that Keith ran off and started researching the lions on his own. It's a possibility, anyway. Seems a bit cliche, really and making Keith Lotor would make him a bit more tragic, fighting himself, divided loyalties, and tying him to the Galra. Shiro already has that a bit with his hand, but then so does Zarkon heading in the opposite direction. He's a Galran using a weapon of the enemy Alteans. There is obviously a theme about the blurring lines between enemies and friends, relying on something from each other to fight. Problem is it would deny us Lotor antics, and that is too high a price. Surely they wouldn't do that.

It still feels possible that Shiro could go to the dark side eventually, not just his PTSD but whatever Haggar did to him. I'm surprised they aren't more suspicious of the arm. It might be able to exert influence on him or it could be how they're tracking their position via his Galra tech. At the very least we've seen how infectious technology was on the castle.
As for Keith, they could even split the difference. Keith ends up being the son of Zarkon BUT he has a twin who was also sent to secure the lions for their daddy. I actually prefer this idea a bit, it's appealing for the potential of split loyalties. Even if Keith rejects Zarkon his brother Lotor could try to make him join forces and they could depose their father and run a juster, fairer Empire together. Not that Lotor would be honest about ruling together in the end.

I haven't finished the series, but I hope they do Lotor justice (if he's even in season 1). I fucking lost it in the original series when he showed up and actually beat Keith in a one-on-one fight and then threw him off a cliff.
Just finished it. It was fun, glad they put in alot of humor so it's never dull. I wish the action were a little more heavy metal though. Too much anime flying kicks and lasers, not enough weight and scrunching.
Can't wait for season 2.

Been through the first four episodes or so, and it looks like a lot of the problems I had with the first episode aren't there in the later ones thankfully. Pidge and Shiro were always my favorites and still are, but Lance and Hunk became a lot less insufferable, and the pacing's way better. It's the reverse of the Thundercats reboot.
