Not just because of the gun shot but there was some nonsense early on where while investigating the case of a murder Batman turns on the shower and the steam reveals Joker scrawls confessions of his psychosis or something. I just had to put the comic down for a minute with the thoughts going through my head.
Don't get me wrong TKJ and a bunch of other stuff have already commented that he is a weird asshole but it just felt like they were turning him into Buffalo Bill or something. I don't want to imagine a pale, skinny, green haired, wet, naked homicidal maniac finger painting his journal in the shower.
A character can inherently be a lot of things, implied or direct, from audience to audience through interpretation but generally the idea of a character is that there's something you want to convey and somethings you just don't convey.
It was that initial red light followed by how the rest of the arc unravels with him being 5 steps ahead of Bruce and Zatanna, somehow, and also tricking them in front of their face and all that crap instead of just being a crazy, clown themed guy they find and beat up.

What DC needs to do is outline some kind of rules for the magic in the DC universe entirely. Something to limit her and the other magical users, like Doctor Fate.
Zee's pretty cool. One of DC's coolest, most memorable B-listers. Her whole speaking backwards gimmick, along with the magician's outfit she has is thematically really cool and instantly recognizable. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. Doesn't hurt at all that she's sexy as fuck and is probably one of DC's most fetishistic characters. Who wouldn't want to fuck Zatanna? Come on.
Honestly I feel like she has a lot of potential. DC could easily make her an A-lister if they wanted to, right up there with the Big 7. She could easily be used as a sort of 'gateway character' into the magical corner of the DC universe. She kind of already has been used like that before.
Also I think it's funny how Paul Dini is in love with the character, yet he consistently writes practically the most boring Zee ever. Zatanna, in my mind, should be going on crazy Dr. Strange-style cosmic, magical adventures and shit,but his Zatanna book was never really all that interesting and was pretty underwhelming, honestly.
I think if DC wanted to, they could give her a supporting cast that really worked, give her a memorable rogues gallery, the works.

Not necessarily. There have been plenty of good stories written about things that are seemingly impossible, and how the world reacts to them. In fact, a large part of the superhero genre is about people with extraordinary powers unknown to the "normal" world. Tying it in with "real" science can help a story if it's handled well, but it's not strictly needed.
The real key is internal consistency. It's okay to have a story about something that breaks the "rules" as long as you have a good idea of what it does and how. We know that Superman has super strength and can fly, or that Spiderman can stick to walls and shoot webs, so we can write stories around them and their powers. They're not like anything that mankind understands, but that's not a problem because we have a good idea of what they are.
On the other hand, magic tends to run into problems with that very principle. At the basic level, "magic" can mean pretty much anything, so when you have a character like Zatanna whose power is to use magic, that essentially means she can have any power at any time. The authors tend to handle this by adding lots of specific limits like "this requires a lot of power" or "this specific feat is not within her ability", which tend to arbitrarily come up when the plot demands them, and frequently aren't even consistent. The result is a character whose options in any situation are limited only by arbitrary plot contrivance.

Her appearance in power girl was pretty shit but that's mostly because I don't like magical power stealing as a plot point.
Also, everyone ITT just now checking out Zatanna's Seven Soldiers mini should do themselves a favor and read the rest of the series. It's seven interlocking minis between two bookend issues that combine to tell a sweeping, magical story across seven different perspectives all having different adventures almost at the same time. It's a fantastic, underrated comic, one of Grant Morrison's best, and is easily one of the most dense, layered, and re-readable comic books ever written. Every time I re-read it, I catch something I didn't catch the last time. It's so good and the every artist involved is fantastic and fits each series perfectly.
You'll understand the full story and the context of everything going on much better as well.

She was terrible in JLD. She was John's fucktoy and slave. Seriously, at a point John forced the entire JLD cast to be his puppet forced to act whenever he wanted because he had trapped them to the House of Mystery and his commands. Despite this and John lying about finding clues about her father murder she still felt love for him, even knowing that he only wanted to use her.
She was also shown to be a wizard groupie that would hop on the dick of any top wizard that showed up.

Like, seriously. I mean, everyone's supposed to have a niche on the team. Superman has monster-like mutant villains, Batman has mobsters and gangsters, Wonderman has ancient monsters and gods, GL has aliens, and Flash has the more campy, not-really-trying villains. After that, they just kinda tack on whoever. Heroes like Hawkgirl and MM are fantastic but their rogues aren't terribly unique from GL's. It's usually just more aliens, and because GL is all around the Galaxy, his enemies come from everyone, not just one or two planets (Mars and Thanagar).
Then there's Cyborg who doesn't even really have any rogues, and who doesn't offer much expertise in a field that was already pretty much dominated by Batman, technology.
Zatanna however, has pretty much every evil magic user in the DC universe in her rogues' gallery, and her field of expertise, magic and sorcery, isn't covered by any of the core members. Even wonder woman doesn't know much about magic beyond that of the Greek gods.
Why has Zatanna, let alone any of the mage characters, been a part of the JL core?

This actually reminds me, today I was thinking about this thread and I came up with a theory as to why Zatana has remained on the C list for so long. She's too goddamn powerful. Imagine if she babysat gotten for batman over a weekend, by te end of it Joker would probably be either sane, banished or put in stasis, clayface would be 'cured' and behind bars, Hatter would probably be literally sent to Wonderland right in front of the Jabberwocky's cave entrance, etc. And those would not be too hard on her to pull off.
