The Mob war chapter was apparently originally planned to happen after the events of the dragon chapter, but Morbi realized extremely late that the story structure would work a lot better if it took place in the period where Poppy's arms were fucked up.
There was some post where he explained it in more detail, but I can't remember where it was.

Well for Kit I wouldn't be surprised if she was already a bit infatuated with Poppy, but never acted on it due to thinking she was married. You have to admit, Poppy is pretty amazing. Watching her kick everyone's ass at the tournamen and being told she selflessly risked her life fighting a dragon to protect her subjects probably made Kit be a bit in awe of her. Poppy also gets points in Kit's book by being one of the few people she can see, and apparently Kit thinks Poppy is beautiful. For Poppy it also makes sense why she would want to date and possibly marry Kit. First is Kit is royalty. If royalty is interested in you, you pay attention. Second is Kit is literally the best answer to the "How will Lily be taken care of after I'm gone" question Poppy is trying to answer. Kit is rich as fuck and if Lily is a princess no one is gonna fuck with the princess unless they have a death wish. Finally, Kit is also an adorable doofus who is also one of the most loving people there is. Kit saved Poppy's life with her medicine, made the Fenneclands a safe(ish) place for Poppy to raise Lily, wants to brighten Lily's future with her opossum-acceptance agenda, and would love Poppy and Lily until they day they die. Kit IS a kind person. She's everything Poppy could ever want. So while Poppy isn't gonna marry her immediately, dating her makes perfect sense.
Also IMO they have good chemistry together.

Friedrich waited. The lights above him blinked and sparked out of the air. There were dragons in the base. He didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. His warnings to Kit Darling were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Friedrich was an army captain for fourteen years. When he was young he watched the palace and he said to dad "I want to be in the palace daddy."
Dad said "No! You will be KILL BY DRAGONS!"
There was time when he believed him. Then as he got oldered he stopped. But now in the secret laboraty of Flora, he knew there were dragons.
"This is Poppy." The radio crackered. "You must fight the dragons!"
So Friedrich got his sword and sliced up the wall.
"HE GOING TO KILL US" said the dragons.
"I will shoot at him" said the dragon and fired its dragon breath. Friedrich sworded him and tried to cut him up. But then the ceiling fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the dragons"! he shouted.
The radio said "No, Friedrich. You are the dragons."
And then Friedrich was an octopus.

The only thing that could redeem this chapter is if the last page or the Friedrich intermission features a page of him one-arm-bitch-slapping Kit for ignoring his warnings, killing her reputation, and proposing to someone as soon as she realized she's single.
I know this is a furry comic, and Morbi abused the lesbian undertones way too much to take it seriously, but I feel like Poppy could be the "mother" Kit needs to get her act together.

I don't think Kit is capable of scheming to marry for a political cause. She wasn't raiseid to be a Queen. Vix I can see marrying for political reasons due to being essentially groomed for the job, but Kit's only became Queen due to Renard falling ill Vix taking his place as High Queen. Pretty sure Kit just really likes/loves Poppy. As for your other stuff I think Opossusms would be alright in this instance. I mean Poppy might marry royalty and this could be a big boon to their reputation. Also Poppy already had at leasat one child (if the others didn't say.... fell out of Poppy's pouch while she crossed a river and fell in or died in another sad, tragic way way).
