>>83372993
Not quite.
There's no punchline if it's a laugh-per-strip comic, and the regular four-panel structure isn't really doing you any favors if you want to be story-based. Like, there's no establishing shot so I have no idea how many villains are seated around the table or where the table is located. There's a huge thunderstorm in the background of the first panel, but everywhere else seems like a generic office.
The panels are too small to have much happen in them with the fat lines and big font you're using. You need to dedicate nearly half of each panel to dialogue when it's only like 10 words, and I doubt you can fit more than one character in a panel with a decent level of detail. Try drawing bigger and then scaling down.

just started drawing some pages, not really sure what i'm doing but i've got a rough story in mind.

how do you guys setup your panels / where do you get templates?
>>
Might as well see how this goes, I've been working on my own web comic on DeviantArt for a while and now I just uploaded it onto tumblr.

Chapter 1 page 1 link here
http://bubblegumandbozzkat.tumblr.com/post/145147495040/chapter1-page-1

I've worked my way all the way to chapter 8.
I do this as a hobby but I'm thinking of taking more time with it, and trying to improve it.
>>
>>83373620
it's okay, you're strip kinda reminds me of the skeleton jelly strips just a bit
>>
>>83373695
Art needs a lot of work.
>>
>>83373688
I start out with a 2x4 grid and then I see if that works.
If it doesn't and I need more or less than 8 panels, then I see if any of the rows should have 3 or just one panel.
Then I make some panels longer and some panels shorter depending on the pacing.
After that, I just go by feel.
>>
>>83373843
any tips or things you suggest I work on?
I'm open to improve where I can

Your backgrounds are alright but your characters feel completely out of place in this world. it lacks any sort of cohesion. the toughest criticism I have (and this will probably be the most difficult to correct) is that overall the whole thing is aesthetically pretty unpleasant.
>>
>>83374003
that is tough, so what would your suggestion be? to change how the back grounds look? or characters?
>>
>>83374044
definitely the characters.
take a look at this example from mobius (mobius is HIGH level, so this is shit I don't expect anyone to reach for a long time, but we learn at the feet of the masters)

the character really feels like she is part of the world, it doesn't feel like the background was drawn around her or that she was pasted on top of it. Cohesion is pretty difficult to explain but its probably, imo THE most important part of composition. but ya know this gets pretty heavy into subjective taste
just start thinking about how every element in the panel works together

>>
>>83373898
I only read the latest five pages, but here's what I got.

Your characters' skulls are way too small in comparison to their faces, especially when you're drawing them in profile.

You only ever seem to use one width of line and it never tapers at the end.
http://imgur.com/a/IkoEZ#5

Your art is absolutely rife with tangents. It's often hard to tell objects apart.
http://schweizercomics.tumblr.com/post/11966164633/the-schweizer-guide-to-spotting-tangents

A lot of your lines that should be straight aren't. They're wobbly or curved.
Drawing long, straight lines is really really hard, I know, but it's a skill you have to master.

A lot of your lines that should be parallel, like the fuller of the straight sword in the first panel, aren't. They have completely different vanishing points.

Your anatomy is hugely inconsistent. For example, pink hair's breasts range in size from "a little smaller than her head" to "twice as big as her head" within a few pages. On the latest page, her hands are completely different sizes in the same panel.

Your character perspective is weird. Example: Pink Hair's proportions in the central panel suggest that her legs are closer to us, but the parts of her that are visible, with her breasts in front of her lower torso, suggest that her head is the closest part, despite being the smallest.

You've got a pretty good grasp of posing and lines of action, though.

I found thumbs for a short comic I wrote/thumbed last year so I'm working on that. I hope that counts for this thread, since it's not a long-form webcomic.

If you're this afraid of criticism, you're not going to get much out of this thread, or posting on anonymous boards for critique in the first place. >>83380686

>>83381042
No, "she's warming up to me" can mean "she's coming around to not want to throw me into a pit of fire"
>>
>>83381042
I don't think there's any shyness connotation with "warming up to", just that the boss is growing to like her more.
Here's what I thought you were trying to say, drawn out a bit:
>yesterday she threatened me with the scorpion box; she saves her best death threats for her closest pals, so she must like me if she's threatening me with scorpions.
Did you mean that the underling is becoming more fond of the boss? I don't really see how that follows in the conversation.
>>
>>83381187
It's a comic and it's on the web - seems like it counts.
Can't say much from four panels, but it looks okay.
>>
>>83381363
Thanks, man. I'm pretty much shooting for okay. I haven't made any personal work since last year so I'm kind of just making something for the sake of making it.
>>
>>83381239
Hmm, I thought there was a shyness connotation to it. I guess that's not the case, I'll change it.
I meant for it to sound like the boss is liking her underline more.

Also, sorry about the spelling errors, strange how I missed that
>>
>>83381443
>I meant for it to sound like the boss is liking her underline more.
Okay, then it should definitely be "she's warming up to me".

I've been having a go at an original strip, based around superheroes (good to know no one hurt themselves coming up with that premise I know).

I'd be interested on people's thoughts on how it's progressing, it's as much a learning curve for me than anything else.

shroomsdayproductions.com/peerless
>>
>>83382367
it's original alright. i dig the focus on action, and i even think it works despite your incomplete education vis a vis anatomy. i'm just having trouble caring when i have no connection to these people yet. it feels like a sequel to something older
>>
>>83382454
That's helpful feedback, thanks.
>>
>>83381182
The comic is about people who get turned into cartoon characters. Some cliché shady agency finds out and puts them in a house together until they can turn them back to normal. Not the most original idea, but its fun to play around with.

The suits of the guys who haul them to the house are made of similar material to whatever their genetic makeup became after the mutation, as to protect them and act as a sort of external antibody to whatever caused it.

Fighting fire with fire, so to speak.
>>
>>83383236
that's a pretty weird premise. it's definitely original, i dunno where else youre seeing this..
>>
>>83383400
I'm talking about the "cartoon characters living in a house together" part. Didn't drawn together do it?
>>
>>83381187
what are thumbnails?
i set up the panels, then i do a rough sketch in each panel then i detail, then i dialogue
>>
>>83385284
So comic thumbnails are essentially the rough sketches that help you plan how your comic is going to go. Little tiny drawings of your pages where you figure out how your panels are going to look, and how things are going to look on the page.

If you're doing a longer-term comic, doing thumbnails to plan your pages will really help you save a lot of time later on.

Here's some real straight-forward info on comic process: www.lackadaisycats.com/makingacomic.php

>>
>>83386089
I don't do thumbnails as much as I should, but yeah, that seems about right.
I usually draw character's expressions rather than just a cross, though.

>>83386197
I usually end up spending 15-ish minutes on a page's layout, which doesn't feel like it's that long but I have no idea. I don't actually add much detail until I'm happy with the paneling, so moving stuff around isn't a huge deal, at least.

>>83386280
Expressions and backgrounds are something I try to establish in them, but sometimes I have to wonder if it wouldn't be easier do part of that work on the page proper. It's rare that artists ever actually post their thumbnail sketches anywhere, so it's tough to really get a sense of what the process is like for other people.
>>
>>83386645
That's really interesting! 15 minutes for a page and at that level of detail isn't a long time at all. What size are you working at, usually?

This is what my thumbs usually look like, sometimes I won't even draw the whole character in the panel. They're sketchy as all fuck. Then again, my pencils/roughs (>>83381187) are pretty tight after the thumbnailing stage.
>>
>>83386645
That's a thumbnail? It looks like it's full sized.
15 minutes doesn't seem like overly long - I've spent hours on some thumbnails.

I think the criteria I use for whether expressions and backgrounds get in is how important they are to the panel. Unless it's really important I just figure that out as I'm rendering.
>>
>>83386610
Uhh, thanks. I'm really on the edge on how I should feel about this.
On one hand, agreed, it's looks shall we say better, but is she still recognizable? If I were to draw her in other poses that don't imitate previous drawings, would the character really be the same?

She was always mean to be a bit rounded, but the new one looks skinnier. I dunno, maybe I should embrace this and not feel so attached to the OG designs. These threads are witness of the major changing on some of my old designs for other character as well, so maybe it's me who needs to let go
>>
>>83387108
I recognized her. Aside from having a chin now, everything seems like a refinement, rather than a change. She's still round, just less cartoonishly so.
>>
>>83386824
8"x5.5" for the thumbnails, then the full pages are A3. 15min may actually be on the low end, now that I think about it, any page with a big establishing shot or something like that eats up more time to sort out the background elements. I doubt they ever take more than half an hour, though.

>>83386893
It's only big thanks to the size I scanned it at, I think. Unless the sketch pad I use for these actually is compared to the size most people work at, I have no idea. In terms of time spent it helps that I'm not the writer, so I'm just translated a script into panels.

I usually focus on background in them just for the sake of keeping the characters' places in them consistent, and I try to put a little effort into the expressions so the writer can comment on them before I move to pencils. They're pretty terrible half the time thanks to the limited time spent, but I'm not great with expressions to begin with.
>>
>>83373688
hey, so I know this doesn't answer your question, but I poked my head in the thread and looked at your strip. You should try switching the places of the fourth and fifth panel.

I say this because that third panel is so spoopy and out of nowhere, it's almost like a punchline, and that reaction in the fifth panel seems more suited to come immediately afterwards.

Well at 8x5.5 inches your thumbnails are about 4 times the size of my thumbnails (I can easily fit nine on an A4), so that explains that. I don't know what the average size is, but your thumbnails being significantly bigger than most people's might well explain why yours end up being more detailed.

Your balloon placement is bad, In panel 5 I'm reading "You're dead[...]" before "Hey, um... where the heck[...]".
>>
>>83388275
Cut out all the dialogue in panel 4 except "oh heck". All that text really weakens the moment, and is redundant: everything you write is obvious from the panels before and after. Show, don't tell.
>>
>>83388451
I mostly agree with you, but I think having more than one "aw nuts" thought might work as well.

Like, "oh dang" "oh heck" "oh man"

You could also do away with text entirely and just have his reaction.
>>
>>83388555
Oh, for sure! I personally like the expression with a bit of dialogue "oh heck" or something. Mostly my beef with that panel is the unneeded exposition.

but you still draw every day, right?

i keep redrawing my first pages every day because when i finish them i feel like they are good for a few days, then i see them again and realize that i could have drawn them way better, so i trow them and start all over again or sometimes i look at my script and realize how i can make things flow way better so that also makes me change what i draw on the pages

some people here can do a lot of cool stuff with simple characters and colors without shading, but when i try to do stuff that way i never feel fully satisfied , so i guess the best for me is keep to re drawing things until i hit i point where i feel really satisfied for a long time
>>

Besides, no matter how good it may look to you now, you'll still cringe at it in 2-3 years.

I second this anon.

Also there's a small issue with panel 1 and 2. Because of the almost identical placement of the hill / mountain and the direction the protag is looking the hill should be bigger in the second panel, not smaller.

You should either make the hill smaller in panel 1 or much bigger in panel 2 to better convey sense of distance.
With this type of minimalistic background it'll make a noticeable difference.

I really like your concept.
Make the skeleton do something spoopy on the next page to double down on the joke from the last panle.

Like this for example:

Panel 1: torrent of screeching souls burst out the skeletons eyeholes
Panel 2: Protag screams, shocked expression
Panel 3: some stupid joke

I did a crappy sketch.

not who you're replying to, but I wouldn't really worry too much for this page. That difficulty seems to come with having a character that's just a skeleton. You could try studying skulls in profile harder if you really want to nail down that issue.

Otherwise, you can just convey that in the next page as the skeleton just keeps moving

So this is probably a stupid question but has anyone here some information on where to find artists (or authors and vice versa) to team up with for a comic project? Or maybe someone can tell from their personal experience?

I've been visiting these threads pretty much ever since I started coming to /co/ but I've never seen it mentioned much even though it's pretty common in the industry.

I started writing comics two years ago and now I have half a dozen projects in various stages of completion. Unfortunately, I can't draw for absolute dogshit. I'm practicing but it'll take years before I can even attempt to draw them so teaming up with someone seams like a logical step.

Any suggestions?

not to be a dick to the numerous people who come here saying >>83391739 >>83391769 these kind of things, but i actually DO have some advice

1. throw out your magnum opus grand masterpiece of webcomics. you will not do something perfect the first time you try, so at least be realistic and start small. do something you can do and improve

2. draw it yourself. we all suck and anyone you think is good was at some point sucking, so pay your dues and start sucking so you can be good, and have it be well desrved and appreciated

3. dont expect anyone to care. people don't care about anything ACTUALLY god in your life, so why will they care about your stupid webcomic. it's like anything else in life, you do it for yourself, and if you expect the best of yourself and deliver it to yourself, others will notice and pay attention to you

4. stop asking amateurs for advice. really, the best lecture in not the world is not as good as failing and trying again, so start failing

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

i know that on the indstry it is a common thing, but here all of us are completely alone, and even if you find someone it will be very expensive and complicated to keep the comic going

only very very specilases have hapenned like that one punch man guy, and it happened because he started drawing the comic by himself and then a good artist liked it and decided to help him

so just do it, draw your comic using whatever you have and if your idea is reallly really good maybe someone will help you

But why? One guy draws, the other does the script and they split the revenue (or the costs for materials and such) 50:50 or whatever they agree on.

I just don't understand why it should be such a phantastic impossible idea for someone with drawing skills and someone with writing skills to work together on a project.

There's nothing to be lost, only to be gained and the JUSTDOIT mentality of these threads can just as easily be applied to a group effort as a lone project.

Because there is no guarantee the comic will make any money. The artist has to dedicate a fuckload of time working and drawing pages and possibly end up getting nothing in return.

As much as writers try to pretend, their end of the work is about 10~20%. I've seen writer/artist teams, and the artist is doing the brunt of the work.

It could be months, or (more likely) years before money starts rolling in. Why would a hired artist put that much time and effort into something for free, when they could be making actual money in the mean time?

I work with a writer on a webcomic, and it's something I've enjoyed doing even as just a hobby. The comic was around for a few years before I was ever a part of it though, and without that I'm not sure I ever would've known much about the project to begin with. It's certainly possible to do, and I'd say getting some examples of your writing out there is a pretty good first step.

I do spend somewhere north of 12 hours on each page, and it's definitely a huge time investment. Coming up with a short story or something along those lines and looking for someone to collaborate with on that would be a good starting point - I wouldn't bet on most folks having the time to join a project for the long haul.

>>
>>83392451
In a sense, yes. But for comics lettering/bubble are intricate parts of the whole picture.

Your art has smooth simple lines, while letters are often jaggy, font differences are jarring, bubbles are lazily scrawled on. It's so bad it even takes away from the art style, as if implying "the art is simple because it's lazy like the text".

>>
>>83394243

>>
>>83394384
I can manage stick figures. But I can't draw perspective. I have no sense of shape or perspective and I can't draw anything resembling a person.

Once I added drawings it would look like the work of a bored 5th grader. I honestly think I'd make a better impression just leaving them blank...
>>
>>83395070
Basic perspective stuff is pretty simple if you do some studies on it. I imagine you'd be fine with some stick figures, text, and/or a completed script if you're looking for an artist to collaborate with. Enough that an artist knows what they're getting into, and can get an idea of whether or not they like your story / work. What's your plan there though, passing the panels to an artist to fill in or something?
>>
>>83392356
>>83392508
The mainstream values good writers over artists (it's "Alan Moore's Watchmen"). So naturally all those burgeoning comic artists will want to try their hand at writing their own project.

Also note that art is identifiably bad, the 90%, or good, the 10%, instantaneously. So while a writer can know their "the one" (and just like a marriage, you just pick the first decent one who says yes), for the artist it takes a little longer... it puts pressure on them.

>>83395070
Wouldn't hurt to learn yourself, unless you don't want to fall for the first point in my post.

>>
What's your favorite art in a webcomic, /HYW/? What do you gravitate to? Right now I'm a big fan of millionfish. The simple flat coloring combined with excellent use of blacks and shapes is really inspirational.
>>
>>83395232
I have detailed scripts with notes on shots (close-up, long shot etc etc), composition, camera angle and of course dialogue. Those are the full-scripts, and I have a few of them. They are essentially finished comics that need only to be drawn.

Then for most of my other stuff I have plot-scripts that leave room for the artist to do his own paneling and art based on general directions.

It's all pretty elaborate stuff considering it amounts to absolutely nothing at this point because there's no drawings.
Sometimes I feel like a deaf man trying to compose music or something. It's pretty frustrating.

Gone with the Blastwave. But if you're talking inspiration, you should be drawing ideas (and comparing yourself) to all art mediums, all industries, all styles.

>>83391339
Note to everyone: Don't linger on text in the environment for more than one panel, especially if it's a gag or as long as a sentence. Just like a speech bubble the readers should see it once, acknowledge it, then move to the next panel.
>>
>>83395755
Well if you've got the materials, get them somewhere visible and start trying to get some artists' eyes on them. Even if it's just showing them off and looking for feedback or something, you need some way to get folks to look at your stuff, assuming you're comfortable with that.

And depending on what you're planning on doing, the Premier Pulp thread that's up might be a decent place to start looking. I'm the one who contacted the writer I'm working with, so I doubt I can be much help in knowing where to look for an artist - but if you don't know one already or get some info out there somehow, they're never going to find you to begin with.

Might want to prepare to be flexible on some the art-related stuff depending on the preferences and experience of any artist that might be interested too, but that's probably obvious.

>>
>>83391555
your comic is beautiful and you should feel good about it
>>
>>83392356
Listen. Do you know why it's so difficult? Because in most cases of "hey I'm looking for an artist for my project", the writer has already fleshed out a majority of the story and it belongs to them. If the artist had no part in fleshing out this world or these characters, why would the artist feel invested enough in this story to slave away drawing it? For that, the artist could just go and spend all of that time on their own projects. What's motivating them to draw somebody else's project if they're not getting paid?

Writer/artist teams are more likely to work if the two of them work together on story/concept/characters/etc as well, even if just a little bit. Scott Wegener and Brian Clevinger (creators of Atomic Robo) are a good example. They've been creative partners for years and they work because 1) their personalities happen to mesh, so they're good friends, 2) they have similar creative philosophies, and 3) they work together on the direction to take the series in terms of writing. Brian does a majority of the writing, but Scott pitches in ideas as well, and they workshop it together.

Good writer/artist duos are so incredibly hard to find because everybody has their own ideas and their own creative philosophies. Not only do you have to be good friends, but you have to be good coworkers, too.

I hate this argument when it crops up. As part of working in a visual medium, the Artist does generally do most of the work. But the writer is the catalyst.

My scripts are often longer than the end page-count just for the sake of making sure everything is set up and accomplished by the end of it. I'm in charge of making note of when certain characterization moments happen, making sure something doesn't fade into the background when it is important, and keeping the pacing right. I'm also in charge of making the characters, the plot, the overarching plot, and generally making everything outside the art -work-.

But my work generally gets done months in advance to the finished product; because the finished product takes longer to create. Because what takes me an hour to edit on a page can take me artist four hours to finish as a page. And the release is staggered, so while I have 32 pages done; the artist makes 4 pages a week for 8 weeks; which does give the appearance of far more work (and often it is!)

And I don't just write for his one comic, I write for three other projects for him. Some of which make us money, some of which might. And they all get the same process; which also includes a copious amount of research and research writing to make sure things feel authentic and correct.

At the end of the day, I call it 60:40 in favor of the artist; 70:30 on an easier update. I'd never deny my artist does more work than me, but the writer when they're doing their fucking job and making a good project, is almost as important. And if that artist can't write to save his ass.

But those are just my two cents.

it's pretty obvious looking at your stuff that you're not in total control. sometimes you get into a good groove, but then you try new stuff and you get right out of that groove. all you can do is keep practicing. it's obvious you have some of it down in an internal deep-down way, and that'll always be there, so keep adding to it. the more you get down effortlessly the more you'll be able to integrate new aspects into it
>>
>>83401895
I really can't imagine doing only one or the other. It'd be like trying to translate language one word at a time using a dictionary, unaware of the context of the other words in the sentence. It's one thing to just do a commissioned drawing, or to write something inspired by art, but when you get right down to it a comic should have fully full-on synergy where the same creative mind is driving both. you can tell when the art is simply purchased, in the same way you can see right through moneygicians who simply bought a prop and do a trick with it as its instructions indicated

if you think you can't draw, skip it and work on your visual expression ability (like even stupid abstract shit that represents feelings you want to get across). then once you have that, maybe you'll feel more like you can draw, or can learn.
>>
>>83401895
Because, after all, I can finish 30-50 pages of writing and consume a few books and articles on whatever subject I'm researching in a day. If the artist tried to do 30-50 pages in a day he'd suffer serious burn-out. Not that I don't, but if I pass out after a whiskey-coffee fueled research bender, I'm not holding the product behind.

It is a whole thing, but I'd totally say there's a lot of writers who don't carry their weight. Who don't edit their scripts in multiple drafts or try to clarify how everything plays into the larger picture so the artist can use that. There's probably some writers who don't even try to make the artist feel enthusiastic about the comic each script and like what they're making is something worth making.

Ultimately if you're getting a writer or want to be a writer for a comic, you have to carry your weight; which will appear to be less when it comes to the production cycle. Because it is staggered. And the weight of your stuff is heavy, because if you fuck it up you're wasting everyone's time.

>>83400484
And pretty much this. You gotta treat it like an active partnership and everyone has an equal voice. It helps to buds. If the artist doesn't have a stake in what you're writing, they have no incentive to make it. Much like how I've not had a stake in what an artist is making and had no incentive to want to write it.

Plus the revenue isn't instantaneous. And hell, if I had a better job I'd pay my artist just to get him into a more productive situation; because I can work off the Steinbeckian bullshit of the world, but he can't.

i bet those pages are like proper comic book pages though, so there isn't much on each one
plus you spend a lot more time working out plot elements and linking together the story as a whole than you do writing down the individuals of each page.

>One guy draws, the other does the script and they split the revenue (or the costs for materials and such) 50:50 or whatever they agree on.

It's simple: think of the amount of time it takes you to write a page vs. the amount of time it'll take the artist to draw it.
It's hard to quantify the amount of time I spend on writting because a lot of it is going back and forth to make sure the pacing is alright; but for me, on the higher end, I'll sometimes take an hours until I'm satisfied with the layout and an hour to write the dialogue (so let's say MAX 2 hours to write a satisfying page). Drawing a page will take me at LEAST 14 hour.

If I were two people who got $100 per page and split it 50-50, Writer-Me would be paid at least $25 per hour (per page) while Artist-Me would be paid at most $3.5 per hour. I'm sure you also think that wouldn't be fair.

If all you want is "just an artist", you've gotta be willing to pay up because there's a high demand for artists and so they can afford to drop your project for whatever else pays better. If you want someone who'll be investd in your work, it's got to be more of a partnership where the artist also gets some input in the story or at least you two are friends
>>
>>83404117
I had never even heard of it before. i have a premise but I'm probably gonna sit down and figure out the rest of the chapter before drawing more pages

Help me out /hyw/

I'm trying to improve on my shading before I actually start my webcomic. And I honestly have no clue where to start.
Figure A is how I have always done shading, which is just basically me using a gradient tool.

Figure B is a more traditional style of shading that everyone seems to do. Don't judge because that right there is my first time ever trying it.

Should I stay with A? If not then how could I possibly improve on B?

Also ignore the fact that it's a Kricketune. It was the first thing that came to mind when I wanted to draw something today

I just don’t want to do it anymore. This is goodbye

This is it. The end of Eva.

I’m done posting my art online for free, I don’t want to do it anymore.

I will never stop painting and drawing and writing and animating and creating. But its long since time for me to stop posting my work to the internet for all to see. Ive been doing it since 2007 and I have nothing to show for it. It was all pointless, all a waste of time.

Not that drawing or creating was a waste of time, its never a waste of time to make something… but posting it online for free, for no reason, for barely any views, comments, or revenue, it was all a huge waste of time that could have been spent working on my art.

I never had a real audience or group of watchers or followers or fans or friends online or whatever, and I don’t want any, I never wanted any, this isn’t a rant or a complaint or a reason why im disconnecting my internet and am done being an online artist, im just pointing out the obvious.

Im just done being an online artist.

Im just done.

So for the longest time I've been working on the writing of my webcomic and not even the plot so much as potential plot lines and (mostly) characters. Its going to be story-driven for the most part, about a a superhero named (for now) Nova Girl who is seen by the Justice League expy that I have is seen as too stubborn and irritable to work well with them. So she joins this second team of weird superheroes to form the Notny Defenders. I have several questions that I've been debating that I would like some help with.

First of all, does anybody know if the word sentai copyrighted? I want to use that as the name of one of my characters. Also, I originally envisioned Nova Girl starting out with the Notny Defenders from the beginning of the comic, I've recently debating starting the story with her by herself and building up to the team (though most if not all the characters will still be there from the start). Which one sounds better? I plan on this being a (hopefully) moderately long run, finishing up when it feels natural, but the overall length isn't a concern to me right now. Also, I'm trying to decide between a more realistic style that I'm not as good at, or a simpler style which I'm not amazed about but either way I hope to improve. Which style should i start the comic with and hope to improve on?

The most important one I would like answered is how to get myself started. Whenever I write the hardest part is deciding where to start. Cause I can work on characters for ages, but its pointless unless I actually start writing the plot. Anybody have any methods they use for writing character driven conflict/plots in their webcomics, especially when it comes to starting the comic?

tl;dr
>sentai copyright?
>With team from start vs buildup?
>realistic (bad) vs simplified (not as bad)?
>Getting the plot started?
>>
>>83410739
>sentai copyright?
Doesn't seem to be.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentai

>With team from start vs buildup?
Get to the point as fast as possible, imo.

>realistic (bad) vs simplified (not as bad)?
Go for realism. It's expected for superheroes and it will be better for action.

>Where to start
The classical monomyth approach would be at a status quo just before the plot hits the fan. If your story is Nova's integration into the Notny Defenders, this would be something like Nova Girl getting her ninth rejection letter from the Justice League and hearing about the Notny Defenders on tv as she's drowning her sorrows.
Or if it's about the adventures of the Defenders, this could be them stopping a generic heist before unveiling a deeper plot.

It is, in fact, Dan's ass. As so why, you'll just hafta find out tonight at 7pm EST B)

As far as a wiki, there were plans to have an online production bible when we got to a certain Patreon tier, but fuck knows when that'll happen. Ideally, one of us will find time to add a little info feature to the site.

Plus little side-stories that aren't plot-relevant, but happen in tandem with the story. So we see the entire Salem Society through Orea's Weird Purple Ghosty Truth-o-Vision, maybe follow Dan on the job, and maybe see Martha back when she was really young and in her hay-day of magic.
>>
>>83410739
I think a first story should give a good impression of what the overall series will be about, but if all characters are there from the start either way, it probably doesn't really matter. Go with whichever you have a better idea for.
A word of caution though: If you try to introduce too many characters at once you can only scratch the surface of everyones personalities and the readers won't care for them as much. It's usually better to put your main focus on only two or three characters at first, even if many more show up, then branch out and focus more on the others later.

I used to have a ton of problems with plots myself until someone told me to focus more on potential conflict when creating/developing characters. Basically set up your characters personalities and believes in such a way that they are bound to clash in some way, then plots should start writing themselves.

Designing props for chapter 2. I get the feeling that the tent this is based on was meant to be erected on ships, rather than on land, but I feel like it would be even more out of place to take a tent design from a neighboring culture.
I don't know if it would be too boring to just leave the tent's fabric off-white, but maybe the frame's fancy woodwork will make up for it.

Well, unless you're already running marathons on the regular, a few minutes of cardio exercise each day would be one way to improve your heart rate without pills or nasty side effects. If you're like most people in the western world, you could probably also benefit from losing weight.

Doctors are usually pretty loath to prescribe either of those, though, since patients get offended, give them bad reviews, and don't follow their advice.

Creepy in a sense of "I want to normalize nudity" but then only drawing female characters naked. Hi co, can you guys help me out? I'm working on a story with sexy hero girls who fight monsters on a weekly basis. And I want them to defeat and purify them in funny fanservicey ways. Any ideas on how I can do this?

One character is pretty busty, so she can maybe smother villains with them and flash people, another has a big butt which she is kind of embarresed by, she's fight a bit like princess peach or Hibari from Senran kagura. And I have a few more I'm still working on.

Any ideas or thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
>>
>>83416756

Okay, might as well solicit opinions here as anywhere. A lot of /co/mrades seem like honest and earnest people with smart things to say. Have a look at my strip, now a few weeks along, and tell me what you like and don't:

http://ladysman.smackjeeves.com/archive/

And before you do: Yeah, it's got furry characters. Furry characters are fun to draw and fit the design ethos I'm going for. That's all. So deal with it and say something constructive, or just move along, okay? Thank you.
>>
>>83416419
Possible? Most people who don't exercise are physically capable of doing so but refuse to spend the time and effort.

>>
>>83416756
Whips and other BDSM toys seem like an obvious way to get the monsters to submit.

One girl ties herself up and, like a voodoo doll, this causes the monster to be immobilized as well?

Sucking out the evil with your lips or tongue seems like another obvious idea.

A magic staff that has to be held between the legs and rubbed vigorously to work?

One girl has to grind a magic seal tattooed on the sole of her bare foot into the monsters' faces to defeat them. She'd have a kick-based fighting style, obviously.

One girl is blessed by the ancient Greek gods of wrestling and can wrestle any monster, but only when she's naked and covered in blessed olive oil in the manner prescribed for ancient Olympic wrestling matches.

>how does it feel regurgitating such overrepeated nonsense?
Honestly, it feels sad and it feels tired.

There are so many, many, many people who just refuse to do the very simple things that would help them and that have been proven to work again and again and again.
It makes you consider why you ever tried to help people. Why you spend years of your life studying to help save people's lives when apparently, you value their lives a lot higher than they ever will. Why you bother picking up the addicts when they overdose and giving them antidote and then go pick them up again next week.

I really hope you one day understand you're not helpless, Anon.
>>
>>83417965
we all say that about something. only some of us are right
the key is realizing that you are helpless about some things, and using the energy you saved (from not bothering) to work on the things that your post is actually true of.

speaking of actually webcomics, do you ever make a comment on one, then look back the next day hoping it's been replied to, and the commenting ability has been removed from that and all other comics?
>>
>>83417941
Ah, kek, I should have realized
>>
>>83415298
Doesn't seem weird to me. I mean if someone needs a tent and already owns one, it's only sensible to use the one they already have.

Or is there a reason why that wouldn't work? Would only ship owners have tents? Are ship tents build in a was that makes them unsuitable for camping on dry land?
If that's the case and there's no evidence what land tents might have looked like, I'd just take the sea tent as a base and extrapolate from that, changing it until it works for regular camping.

>>
>>83418321
Well, the people using it are the kind of people who would be expected to own a tent for every occasion.

They work on land just fine - viking reenactors use them all the time. The main thing is that it seems like a much bigger hassle to carry the frame for a tent like this over land than what you'd need to carry for a tent that uses tent pegs and is driven into the ground.
If you were going through a forest, you wouldn't need to carry anything except the fabric and tent pegs for a tent like pic related - you could just cut branches of the right length wherever you made camp, or use your spear shaft or something.
Whereas with the viking tent I posted above, you've got three special-made seven-foot poles* to carry around or strap to your horse. I don't know much about camping, but that seems a little overly complicated. The only advantage I can see to the frame tent's construction is its ability to stand on its own without needing tent pegs, meaning you could put it up on a ship at sea (maybe as a covering for the recessed cargo hold) or when camping on rocky terrain.

*each of which is rather fragile because of how it's cut to slot into the rest of the frame

I'm not super bothered by it, mind you. It's the least of the anachronisms and inaccuracies that I'm gonna have in the chapter.
>>
>>83418909
i assumed you knew, and were just referencing it, yeah. it's just one of those funny things, the fact that you always see it.

Hm, I see. I wouldn't want to carry that around if there were more convenient options available.

Just to clarify - is there no historic evidence of the simpler tent you posted being used in viking culture or do you just want to include the ship tent because it looks more interesting?

I suppose you could set it up so that something goes wrong and they only have access to the wrong type of tent, but that might take the story on an otherwise pointless tangent.

Or... I don't know much about nordic mythology so I'm not sure how much freedom you're taking with the more fantasy-ish elements of the story, but would it be possible to have some magic related reason for them to use that specific tent? Like a protective spell or something?

If there is any evidence of it, I don't know about it. Maybe there could be some saga accounts of other types of tent, but the only archaeological evidence I know of from the period in Scandinavia is three large tents like this from Norwegian ship burials.

I could put runes on the woodwork and say something about the tent having some magic to it (could even make it plot important with a tiny alteration to one character's characterization), but the tent isn't intended to play any major role in the story so I think it's gonna be fine.

Pioneer of silhouette animation, her film "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" (1926) is the oldest surviving feature length animated film. I remember seeing her last film, "The Rose and the Ring" (1979) on TV a couple of times as a child.

Thanks! Constructive criticism means a lot, honestly. ^.^

Yeah, my lead character is very much a sort of old school squared-jawed pulp hero. But he'll be taken down a few notches when his plans go awry, and other characters have their own ideas for him. Keep watching.

Thanks for the kind words about the art. I'm going for a sort of Deco-ish, "Jazz Age in Space" look. I draw a lot of influence from classic magazine illustration, and garish Silver and Bronze Age comics.

Overall, I'm trying to combine old style SF adventure with a lot of humor and cartoonish sensibilities. I'm shooting for a sort of more mature and sophisticated "Disney Afternoon" show, if that make any sense. :) Thanks again, and I hope you enjoy.

I am not sure why you tagged me on this reply, since I didn't say anything about this, but I have to say I understand where the other anon is coming from. Women/black people/black women sure can make valuable contributions to society, but are we paying tribute to certain specific people because they really deserve, or are we throwing a bone because of their race/gender?

I am pretty sure we also have a bunch of important men who are not remembered, who are overshadowed by the work of other men and women, and you don't care about them. Why should we create quotas to honor people based on what they were, and not for what they did?

These eyes are way worse. I wasn't even sure if you were the same guy who does this comic or some random anon trying to fix it... The lines on the eyes are wobbly, the round shapes are uglier than the original's and don't even seem to match your style, the placement is awkward, both in relation to the face and to each other (the space between the two eyes should be the size of an eye) the irises are too small and it looks like she is surprised/afraid of everything she is looking at in this page, and also, while everything else seems to be drawn with a pencil brush, the irises pixels are so sharp they look like they were drawn with ink brushes.

I mean, she was a little too crosseyed in the original, but it was way more pretty and charming before. Try to keep her iris and the shape of her eyes as a rectangle as they are in the original even if you make another modification. Also keep the round white eyes in the last panel reaction, it's pretty cute and much better than the update.

>>83426081

Thinking of doing a series with this guy. Thought I could make him out to be sort of a medieval, monster hunting jack reacher in the way that the stories are written- he shows up, he meets a few characters, he fucks shit up, and he leaves. Mite b cool
>>
>>83429384

>>
>>83429513
Jack Reacher is a character in a series of novels in which he wanders around modern america, getting into lots of (very violent) trouble and saving people before moving on to the next town or state. Pretty good books, if not a tad formulaic. There was an okay movie made out of one of the novels starring Tom Cruise, which, if you know anything about Jack Reacher, was entirely the wrong person to play him.

That's a bit off topic though, so you can do your own research there.

i think /co/ is full of guys that haven't learned that you need to draw from real life to be good at drawing cartoony stuff so most if them go with "muh style" instead of practicing more importasnt things

but you know what's weird, when i draw stuff that i plan to use for my comic i usually care a lot about shading and choosing colors that work weell together as well as making things feel 3 dimensional

and y usually get comments like oh i like whet you did in____ or i like this design

but i was feeling lazy today so i went to the /v/ drawthread and started drawing a request, another anon was faster than me and delivered something very simple but nice, so i said fuck it, i just finished the lineart quickly, i didn't even check my proportions and i gave it flat colors, no shading at all

and for the fist time ever, someone asked me if i had a place where i put my drawings because he wanted to follow it

so know i don't know what people want or like
>>
>>83437046
that's because cartoony stuff is the only thing you don't need to know real life stuff to get right
not real life ALIVE stuff anyway.

your anatomy still needs a little work, but you're gettin there.
the bigger guy is more realistically big, the far left is more what a bodybuilder looks like, and that's not really 'big' just toned.
however, i think this fucker needs bigger hands and feet. otherwise he's gonna look like a shrimpy guy who has put on a muscle suit.

>>83437343

>>83437363
Oh, well, you want to be at a certain acceptable skill level before you start slapping your name onto something and investing into a Big Project (a comic). Note that what people deem as "acceptable skill level" depends on the individual. ... And if you don't consider paintings to be accomplishing something then I don't know what to say to you. you might be new to these threads (is this your own art you're posting? it's interesting. i wanna see jareth the goblin king in this style), we often do low-grade /ic/ type stuff, particularly in a case like this where he wants a specific body type for the character but knew something was off about it. we were able to quickly zero in on what those aspects are
getting the anatomy right is pure /ic/ but getting a body type right that evokes a certain image is totally here-stuff.

Blocking some basic colors in for the page after my next, because they're mostly identical but the previous page is going to be inked from this while this is going to be left in pencil. As mentioned, the colors were just blocked in to get a loose sense of how the colors will eventually be laid out. I intend to go back and color in actual detail later, so I was more wondering how I could alter the composition or where I could touch up the colors on a large scale, not critiques on the technique of their application.

Its hard to give you a serious reply when there are so many errors to be found in your works. The rocks need more work, the composition sucks balls... are those dead trees or do you intend to put leaves on them? on the angle you've drawn your characters, the mountains should be drawn differently and at a different angle. I asked if youre going to put leaves because if you are, those mountains you drew will be blocked from view.... as it should be. You need to increase the height of some things, adjust line weight, etcetera etcetera.

Color-wise, your best pal is to search for refs and tutorials in google. I mean did you seriously just slapped shit colors in because muh blocked nuh loose sense and then went "how is this guise?" here?

Is anyone ever concerned about literary osmosis? Like when you watch or read something, and then elements of those seep into your subconscious and then into your work?

Example: One character used a BFS, then I watched my friend play The Witcher 3, now when I envision this character, he uses what is more or less the Witchers Silver sword.

I can usually backtrack and say something like "BFS's are impractical (which they are)"
>>
>>83441317
fuck is bfs
>>
>>83441317
Not quite like what you're describing, but I often get derivative ideas that I then obsess over for a few days/weeks and I have trouble focusing on the stuff I should be working on because I'm too busy thinking about how my take on magical girls or FPS games or whatever would be so goddamn revolutionary and basically I should be in charge of the universe.

For your character, it seems like a pretty big change to go from a BFS style sword to what's basically a realistic longsword. Why'd you give him a BFS to start with?
One reason it changed might be that you didn't really think about why he'd have a particular style of sword.

>>83441489
Big Fucking Sword. Think Cloud, or Guts.
>>
>>83438294
>It's a character design sheet/ref not an 'introducing my OC' type of pic.
They're saying that a character design that has no style and conveys nothing about the character is worthless, you numbskull.

It isn't helpful for others because it gives no information other than a build and is completely boring. It isn't helpful for you either unless you're doing it purely to practice anatomy, because you're designing a character without personality and therefore failing to practice methods in which to express their traits, such as posture, facial expression, etc.
>>

Give it pop culture, your favorite things from ours if applicable, unique fantasy counterparts if not. Write natural dialogue. Draw googly eyes on every page and have them blink on occasion.

spacing's pretty uneven on the game listings. i'd put a space before and after the dash instead of just after or neither
them's some unfortunate results. i think. wait is that a zombie annabeth?
i mean, shouldn't she have the same skin color as her kid?
i love the smiley pauldrons. i don't think it's a good idea having a blushy below nose-level though.
>>

You're right, if there is no praise in a post then it's trolling. I now see the error of my ways.
>>
>>83449860
it worries me that people are actually taking you seriously
for god's sake tpdats and amonzone, don't apologize and thank people who include 'numbskull' or 'sucks balls' in their "criticism"
or tells you to redo everything, or makes fun of you for daring to block out colors or share character designs.
>>
>>83449521
Put in lots of things that aren't there for plot purposes.
The hard part is to tell your story efficiently at the same time.

>holy and a being of great power

>smiley faces
No, that's goofy.
>goofy face on the sun symbol
No, that's goofy.
>striped socks
No, that's childish.
>exposed garters
No, that's trashy.
>bright red shoes under a green skirt
No. What is she, a Christmas elf?
>asymmetric hip
No. Asymmetry looks weak and malformed.

As a more general criticism, her color scheme is too half-and-half. Have either green or orange/brown clearly dominate. Also, put some green above the waist - trim on the armor, or a necklace, or change the color of her hair band.
>>
>>83450022
Alright, thanks man, I will try it again later, thanks!
>>
>>83450022
i assumed the sun symbol was from dark souls
>>
>>83450064
Good luck. It's rare to hit a home run on your first try.

>>83450090
Maybe, but it looks goofy and out of place on a character that's supposed to look holy and powerful.
In its original Dark Souls context, it's a sign that the guy wearing it is a goofy idiot.
The fact that he turns out to be a total badass is supposed to come as a shock to the player.

>tfw 2/3 of the trinity of retards haven't been here lately
I think they've gained a little self awareness now
>>
>>83450022
The face on the sun doesn't look too goofy, it's a classic Victorian sun face like in the Rider-Waite tarot or a standard ouija board. It doesn't detract. It could use more detailing, maybe.

>>83449995
I just don't want to stagnate and I want this comic to be good, and I could tell something was off without knowing how to edit it. Admittedly, people who sincerely use "muh" need to get dragged to the streets and shot, but the critique seemed pretty sound otherwise.
>>
>>83450183
One of them has been around lately, he's posting anonymously now and trying to hide his posting style. He had me fooled for a little bit too.
>>
>>83450382
well i'm glad you can see through it to the useful bits then
because yeah i agreed with a lot of the critique
>>
>>83450495
Same here. Did I improve on it, then? Is there anything I can do to make the composition better at a glance?
>>
>>83450382
I know there's a long history of using suns with faces, but to most readers, they look pretty goofy. Unless he's intentionally trying to evoke the goofy sun symbols of heraldry and such, he'd be better off using something without a face on it. It's not like there's a lack of places to take inspiration from.

Ok, how about something like this?
>>
>>83450638
well we seem to be looking at the people from belowish, while the rest of the background is very much an aerial view. it's a weird angle regardless.. if it was me i'd probably just draw a panel divider and let the bottom be its own unrelated thing, with the top as an establishing shot
>>
>>83450926
much more sensible outfit now. the unified color scheme is pretty nice.
>>
>>83451124
Cool, thanks!
>>
>>83450926
Substantially less appealing than before. Don't listen to those jackasses unless you want a markedly worse design. Not a single change was an improvement.
>>
>>83451176
Ah shit, now I'm a little confused.

I guess I'll try one more time later tonight trying to mix both designs, so she can look like a superhero of great power, while still looking like an icon kids could look up to (Well, kids of West Tree)

I want to bump Ellen!
>>
>>83450926
Now there's nearly no green on the lower half of her. The exposed legs also aren't very dignified. Try giving her a skirt that covers the rear and sides in addition to the cloth with the sun on it.
>>
>>83451304
you'll have to develop taste of your own i suppose. i suspect this person is just fucking with you, but the 'i hate what you changed based on that other anon's suggestions' post is a post i've posted many times and meant it, so
>>
>>83451304
Protip: don't listen to people who can't or won't argue for their opinions.
This guy sounds like he just wants to cause trouble.

Ok, skirt + cloth this time, got it!
>>83451398
>>83451413
Yeah, but still, it's a nice change of pace, and pretty fun to do these.
>>
>>83451417
He's a dump Ellen poster. What do you expect?
>>
>>83451417
No, I mean I want to bump Ellen herself!
>>
>>83451098
That's an interesting take on it. My only issue there is that I wanted to use the full page as an establishing shot (the previous page will be about the same but black-and-white with coniferous trees instead of deciduous trees), so making it two panels might break that up a little. Maybe I should just redraw them?

They're also about 50 feet above the ground here, if that changes anything. Looking at it now, I can see that the tree on the left looks deceptively close.
>>
>>83451447
>>
>>83451413
just keep in mind that just because they DON'T argue doesn't necessarily mean they can't or won't. but it's worth scrutinizing
>>
>>83451467
ah okay so they're climbing up a cliff and the camera is embedded in the bit of the cliff above them. i wasnt gonna say, but that's.. kinda what it looked like.
