I feel like their main purpose was audience surrogates. They could stumble onto problems Bibleman needed to solve, and he could explain to them what he needed to do, and why.
They also did some gruntwork for him, resolving smaller obstacles to clear his path to a dramatic confrontation with the main enemy.
My fundie Pentecostal foster parents thought Bibleman was satanic. They bought a video of it from a Christian bookstore once for their (real) son and after seeing it took it back to the store and complained. I've never watched it and always wondered what they saw in the show to make them deem it the work of satan and hate it so much.

If I had my parish's hymnal I could pull you some examples, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
Basically I just look at the copyright date for the song. If it's somewhere between '68 and the 90's, I'm most likely going to hate it.
And if it was composed from 2000 onwards, chances are it's going to wind up being more of a performance piece for the cantors and choir rather than something for the whole congregation.
