From a writer's perspective it might be because they needed to jumpstart Lapis and Peridot becoming friends and with a cast that was growing they couldn't dedicate too much time to it, especially if they're just going to be honorary Crystal Gems and not be around as much once Steven goes back to the temple. Lapis only barely changed her mind about Peridot once Steven talked to her about.
Or a different perspective: it's just bad writing. Steven wanting to help nourish a friendship between Peridot and Lapis is okay. Steven, who is supposed to be all about empathy, blatantly ignoring the signs from Lapis is just weird.
