>>

So with Birdman and Space Ghost being prominent characters in this, there's going to be no end to the Adult Swim jokes, is there?
>>
>>82888510
Probably not, but it's all in good fun.
>>
>>82888358
>dead Herculoids

This better be a cop-out.

Still, I like this so far. Birdman vs Space Ghost next issue? Is this a mini or an ongoing?
>>
>>82888463
Yeah, art was great except for this >>82888270 one. Seems apart from Doc. We've got a second artist on the book. Didn't know that, though Shaner was doing this one solo.
>>
>>82888358
Wait even Shazzan is going to be in this.
>>
>>82888541
Ongoing.
>>
>>82888407
I liked it.

The Shaner's art is nice, and Bellaire is earning her money as a colorist -- it's all warm and inviting.

And
>>82888283
>>82888296
were awesome, as entire pages, on so many levels.

Overall, I think the book works as a "reboot". It doesn't rely too much on references to the old cartoons, and a first time (and even young) reader can enjoy it.

The actual cartoons were before my time, but I remember watching them all the time on Boomerang around the time stuff like Dexter's Lab and Johnny Bravo began moving there. Johnny Quest and Birdman were two I watched most, so this was a pretty fun nostalgia trip. They couldn't have chosen a better artist than Shaner for this.
>>
>>82888328
This page is like something straight from the Silver Age. I love this art.
>>
>>82888760
I'm still hoping they'll get Blue Falcon in the comic. My autism demands it.
>>
>>82888912

Yeah me too, judging from the tone of this Dino-Mutt will not be nearly as comical. Glad Mightor made it too though, and we eventually get the Galaxy Trio and Impossibles.
>>
>>82888285

I don't think Tundro is dead, just knocked out. Gives the rest of the Herculoids a reason to go through the portal and rescue him.
>>
>>82888004
I've never really watched any cartoons related to this, only reading this because of creative team and it's quite reader friendly. Are there any cartoon recommendations?
>>
>>82888975
Either an OC or a bit character from the cartoon that nobody's going to remember anyway.

The girl with the Impossibles >>82888463 is definetly an OC.

Don't blame them if they have OCs, really. Those old action cartoons were sausage fests. We need more girls in there.
>>
Loved it. So did my dad who grew up watching these shows. I could tell from his voice when talking to him afterwards that he was overcome with nostalgia. He grew up on a farm and the reception for his family's house was alway sketchy back in the 60's. Whenever these cartoons were on he did his damnedest to watch them, particularly Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, and the Herculoids. When I was growing up he recorded all the shows off the TV with VHS tapes so he could have them and so he could share them with his kids. He just loves this stuff. I think the fact someone actually remembered these characters and tried to make a serious story that gave them the respect he thought they deserved really got to him.

So 10/10 if only because my dad loves it.
>>
>>82888545
>We've got a second artist on the book. Didn't know that, though Shaner was doing this one solo.

Keep in mind that this issue had extra pages (hence the 3.99 price tag). I think he'll be solo from now on.

Then I suggest you start with Johnny Quest, Space Ghost and Herculoids, IMO the best shows of that era, then if you want something in the same vein Birdman, Mighty Mightor and Galaxy Trio. If you want more comedy, the Impossibles, Dynomutt the Dog Wonder (that's the one with Blue Falcon), and The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan (definetly not appearing on thie comics but hilarious).
>>
>>82889083
They were syndicated on cartoon network for a while in the 90s which is how I watched most of them.

I remember Johnny Quest, Bird man, and Space Ghost as well as the more comedic ones like Penelope Pitstop (childhood boner time!) being pretty good.

I haven't watched them since, but I do have fond memories watching them.

It was all the original incarnation of Boomerang. Block from like 5am to 8am on Saturday mornings. Because a lot of these shows only aired 7 minute episodes, they were able to throw in so much diversity. Strange word to use since so many of them used the same backgrounds and sound effects.

But for instance, I didn't know Birdman had a face. And I guess Space Ghost does too now?
>>

Space Ghost never had one in the cartoon. Or even an origin, if I recall.

Good shit. I've only caught a handful of episodes of the action oriented hanna-barbera cartoons as a kid on Boomerang but this stuff works well on it's own that you don't need to know the original material to enjoy it. Everything about this issue was solid.

I'm pretty sure they did, actually. If not, it must've been in the old Gold Key comics... I just know it was established canon even back in the day.

My nigga. Not enough of /co/ remembers a time when Toonami would air shorts to fill time between their half-hour shows, instead of commercials.

And apparently you don't remember Boomerang long before Toonami was created.

Is Jeff Parker the most underrated comic book writer of the 21st Century so far? I think he is, he has yet to write a bad book, everything he writes is consistently enjoyable, yet he's not a big name like Johns or Bendis.

Thanks to this comic and this thread I finally looked into getting Jonny Quest on DVD or Bluray, something I always assumed was impossible.

Well. I was wrong.

Turns out as of last November it's possible to get the entire franchise on DVD. All three shows, both movies. Everything.
>>
>>82911415

And now that I look into things it seems the original show was censored. Because of course it was.

Fuck the universe.
>>
>>82911500
The folks behind Loony Tunes may have an idea that "Censoring would be as bad as saying bad shit never happened" but Hanna Barbara still thinks it has a squeaky clean image. Even after the Cartoon Cartoons.
>>
>>82911692

From what I gathered off of the reviews on Amazon, it still airs unedited on Boomerang. So some tight ass exec got involved at the last minute or such.

And from what I can tell I just checked Pirate Bay okay there's no high quality rips of that either.
>>
>>82911800
What's weird is that they have individual unedited seasons.
>>
>>82905335
Yeah, I get the feel he's supposed to be sort of reminiscent of Johnny Quest. Ty Journey or something.

I get a real kick out of Frankenstein, Jr. and The Impossibles making appearances in this. I expected pretty much everyone else, but they were a pleasant surprise.

Perhaps Blue Falcon was left out so as not to ruffle Birdman's feathers.

This is off to a great start and has me wanting to revisit all these series from my childhood. My only real complaint is that they didn't even use Darwyn's cover after everything that's just happened. I was planning to pick that one up.

>>82888760
Man, those are nice. It's always great to see well-made customs like that.

Speaking of HB collectables, Funko announced the release of a Space Ghost POP! vinyl today. I grew up on Hanna-Barbera cartoon reruns more than anything, so I might have to grab it and the Frankenstein, Jr. one I saw a while back.
