Whatever they do will work because these characters feel real

That was Patrick Harpin, he left after the first batch and he was called out for being a credit-stealing asshole. He also called Page a "piece of shit" while he was babbling & strapped to a hospital bed, which is bad form.
There's a lot of evidence Page contributed plenty to the show, though towards the end of his tenure I'm sure his declining health probably got in the way of productivity.

I am pretty sure that was subtext in "Skater Sumo" - Sumo struggling to explain to Clarence why he didn't want him to come had the word "girls" thrown in there, and indeed it reminded me a lot of my young experiences trying to go hang out with girls who'd shown interest in me without my friends knowing or getting in the way (if I could go back and tell myself that any relationship you are embarrassed by isn't going to work out, I would).

Holy shit this episode was good. Almost as good as Dream Boat which is honestly one of the best-written episodes of any of the current CN shows. The problem was none of the episodes that came after were boring crap in comparison.

Not a whole lot in season one after episode 20~ ish (though "Hurricane Dilliss" was a pretty good down-to-earth one). But season two thus far with a couple notable exceptions has been mostly grounded though, although they really do only break out the feels very rarely, it's primarily a goofy fun cartoon. But they definitely toned down the surreal wackiness.

I think there could very well be more in the future, as this says >>82554976 this is a pretty varied show. Nostalgic & comfy is probably my favorite mode for it to be in too but I'm glad it's not the only one, y'feel. Every week's a bit of a surprise and I think it's almost always funny. And luckily for you guys it really does seem like they're making a deliberate attempt to back to the old tone so maybe this show's best episodes are still ahead of it (this last one was certainly great).
