tl;dr
It was an okay episode.
Bun Bun was 100 Bn% better than CB in every regard.
The episode addressed pretty much everything about Finn and Phoebe's old relationship while showing they're still very alike.
They placated the shippers without giving them anything but still left it somewhere nothing was off the table.
6/10 - Better than a filler episode, worse than a main arc episode/flute song
Bun Bun running around fucking shit up in front of everyone was really messing with my social anxiety.

This episode is actually deep. Bun bun represents what Cinnamon Bun could have been if he was just more outgoing and endearing. But Cinnamon Bun is okay with being a civil fellow, but also supportive of Bun Bun being chaotic.
Normally cartoons end with a Bun Bun type character fucking up everything and a Cinnamon Bun type character berating a Bun Bun, then some half-assed compromise played as hearthwarming gets done.

A lot of stories work in an 11 minute format much better than a 22 minute one. Take a moment, it's not just CN either, there's about 3 reasons I can think of off the top of my head that are actually accurate now.
First off, like I said, episodic stories, think of something like The Paper from Spongebob, or other low-level-in-story episodes from other shows. Would they work better in 22 whole minutes? No, and that's not just because "fucking writers can't pull of a simple story stretched to 22 minutes", it's because you don't need that long to have a fun little story.
Next is production times, you can push more out and have it be just as fulfilling.
Also, it's a good time slot filler, it's not the main reason cartoons are made in an 11 minute format these days, but it does help for an after-movie issue or what-not.
I don't think your argument is flawed, I just don't see why you're so upset. Cartoons have also been 11 minutes longer than CN was a thing, especially modern wise.

Mostly I find it increasingly frustrating to have a 40-second "establishing" scene and then just be dropped into the main plot with literally no time for anything to sink in cause the story HAS to go a mile a minute for the sake of keeping to the time limit.
I'm not saying everything has to be Dragon Ball Z where Frieza's "five minutes" in canon is made into over two hours of viewing, but hot damn a pregnant pause or a smoother transition into the episode's story arc would be appreciated.

Dome metaphor.
The half hour "Dome Experiment Special" episode from earlier in the season was more than just a fun poke at the Under The Dome references (and the Stephen King story) but is connected to other things.
The dome returned again in this episodic 11 minute episode (and stays for future episodes) and a button was placed in the park and Benson was having a manager of the park crisis and wanted to push it, the dome started affecting what everyone was trying to tell him and changing reality, a lot of different shit happened but the thing in the picture is the dome over the park, a quick reference to Pop's head was put on it since he's somewhat related to the story.
I'm running my shit together so unless you're not into it, maybe watch a few of the plot important episodes? If not I won't list them.

Just watched it. Yeah it was kind of boring and didn't have enough jokes to make up for it but aside from that it was alright enough, could have been a lot worse so I'll just be happy with that.
Bun Bun was.... eh, mostly missed the mark. Very boring character type, and it was blatantly clear that she was gonna let out Flame King. Her slamming against the button was funny at least. Wish they had done more to make her interesting but Finn and Flame King calling her alright was chuckle worthy.
Best part of the episode was probably Flame King, nice to see him again and have him still be funny after such a long absence.
Finn was alright, though he had some of the annoying mannerisms Xayaphone always gives him. Him making up with Phoebe was good but goddamn it should have happened like a year and a half ago, it's been so long I doubt casual fans even remember what Finn was apologizing for.
Flame Princess was also alright though she's never particularly interesting. I hate when she wears normal looking clothes, they should look like they're fucking made of fire. Like, come on designers.
So yeah, not sure how to rank it. Really needed more happening. Maybe 7/10, being generous because I had fears it would be Red Throne2.0 and those didn't come to fruition.

A more direct idea though would be something like the X MAGIC Y collectables that drive 50% of JRPG plots, i.e. the Crystal Stars in TTYD or the Heart things from Super Paper Mario. Mario's always off collecting 7 Macguffins.

That's not the point. Finn and Bonnibel had something in the past, it was evident that after Burning Low, Finn and Bonnibel were pretty much through, with little moments in Lemonhope and Pajama Wars. It's over, we have had episodes that are convincing enough to put Fubblegum aside, have you seen Don't Look? Sure Finn kissed her in the past, but it is blatant that Finn does not desire her now. What drives Bubbline is that fact that they are getting closer, even in the writers are "using it as bait," it is undeniable they are closer than what we see as most "friends on the show".
Also Finn kissed Bonnibel in Too Young, but they literally had no choice to get free. Get over yourself.

Just hanging out isn't romantic. That was an invitation for bro time, which he accepted because he had no reason not to. He likely actually wanted to hang, but was prepared to just immediately hoof it on back to the Candy Kingdom with hardly a word to FP. While they hang out he apologizes about being a shit all that time ago, but it doesn't look like he expects or even hints at wanting any romance.
This may or may not be consistent with how he really feels, but remember Huntress Wizard? He did all that stuff because he was really digging her, but he insisted the whole time that he didn't, and he was never, ever going to try anything or admit it. Not even to himself. He would have just kept playing that flute til they both gave up for good had he not been goaded into confessing. And, despite knowing she reciprocated, he just accepted without any fuss that HW didn't want to be with him for whatever reason. Not even disappointment.
He just kind of passively lets it all happen, and if that isn't giving up, it certainly looks very similar. His underlying feelings might make him want to do stuff that allows him to be around these girls, but he's unwilling to actually act on what he really wants. Just hanging out incurs no significant emotional risk. I don't think this is a permanent situation for him, but for now he's put his emotions in a lantern. Only a cute little retarded child can save him.

Everything Stays. IMO it's the best song Sugar has wrote so far, it's a really nice tune and it flows perfectly (flow is a problem she has sometimes with her songs). Besides that one, though...I can't think of any. I guess they just haven't been able to replicate the catchiness of Sugar's tunes. It's bound to happen when you don't have somebody musically inclined storyboarding/working on the show anymore, though.
