since shes running her hair would be flowing, and since her head is turning it would be flowing along to that
her upper body could be turned just a smidgen more to the left since the leg on her right is in the front, the upper and lower body move like that, which would let her turn her head even more back

Here, Batman. This is a character portrait for a friend's D&D campaign. How well or bad did I do with the work?

>>82383226

There's a variety of ways to show design characters. I usually think about the environment and what kind of setting they live in. Do they live in modern or a more older era of their time? The outfit a character may also have indicate what their personality could be, and its good to add as many hints of who they are and what they do as a living. Also, when it comes to animation, its important to make it as simplistic to the audience as possible.

Thanks for the reply.

I've followed a few tutorials on how to draw form, but it seems like none of it is sinking in. I can't draw a sphere without going into extreme detail with the contours wrapping around it, and even if I do, it's 50/50 that the sphere is in the right angle.

Here's something I recently drew, but I feel like it's lacking a lot of volume. Drawing bodies is even worse.

I have been to Drawabox, but I feel like I'm missing something when it comes to the lessons about organic shapes and intersections. Again, it's like I have to always add the 3 axis and lots of contours across everything instead of naturally drawing whatever form I want.
>>
>>82383226
A lot of my characters come from me just throwing together a background character, and becoming too attached to throw it away. Like, "let's just make a quick little punk teenage girl... Crap, she's cute. I can't just never use this again..."

My "Main" characters have gone through so much iteration and design changes (within reason- they don't suddenly change ethnicity or body shape) over the years that it's more of an ongoing process of refinement than a conscious decision.

Oddly, the background-turned-returning characters tend to be a lot closer to their "final" designs upon creation than any of the primary characters I've made. Little tweaks here and there are inevitable, but not NEARLY to the extent that I've iterated on my other characters.
>>
>>82407298
i think its pretty good anon, youre problem is line weight not being where it should, like the line could be thicker at his mouth end, his chin folds, ect

>>82408727

>>82408805

>>
>>82383226
i always develop my characters personality and backstory first
by then ill already have some idea of what they look like bodywise
from there i play around with their design

never go with your first design right off the bat, even if you think its perfect always draw multiple designs
>>
I guess this is related.

A bunch of people have started asking me if I do commissions, to which my answer has always been "eventually, but I don't know about pricing." Well, I still don't know about pricing.
A couple people told me that I should figure out an hourly rate and figure out how much I value my time. Well, I still don't have any idea, and I don't think I will without help.
For those of you that take commissions, what do you charge? What do you think is a fair price? To those of you that have seen my stuff on the dabble-too tumblr, what do you think I should charge? Ive been trying to figure something out for too long, and I'm not getting anywhere.

Honestly, I'm the last person I'd ask about valuing my time and content. I can't even begin to tell how many times I've talked myself out if accepting money just because I felt weird about it. Hell, I was offered $20 a session for math tutoring, and I said I'd do it for free. I ended up doing about 10 sessions, all for no pay. I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to these things. All I need is a place to start when it comes to prices.

Personally I think it's Greato-Daze but if I were to change anything it'd maybe be the lips. Maybe add some shine or a lower lip since jojos are known to have kissable as fuck lips.
>>
>>82414725
For your art, I'd personally say that whatever you do, don't start your prices below $10. You're good enough to at least do $10 sketches. And just work your way up from there.

>>
>>82414614
Maybe the mouth? That's the only thing that looks off to me.

If you want to change the whole face, then maybe a more serious expression. With an overall cute little body but just the most upset kind of angry face you can imagine.

>>
>>82415299
For you. at LEAST $25. But honestly, I'd aim for aound $30 really. Keep in mind that they're paying you for your time. Every character or background or whatever someone wants should ask a significant amount to your price!
>>

>>
>>82415420
Thank you!

Anything that I should watch out for when accepting commissions?
>>
What's the best way to go about line weight? I mean, depending on what should a line be darker or lighter? Things like skin folds or areas with heavier weight?
>>
>>82415648
Set ground rules. A list of things you will not draw, Things that you will draw but will charge extra for, and all the ways you can be contacted. Make sure to keep a semi-close relationship with your commissioner so that you can give them exactly what they want. In terms of payment, I prefer to wait until I've finished the drawing before I get paid but you might want to do something else (I wouldn't ever send the final render before I've been paid though).
>>
>>82415648
Beware of comissioners who don't know what they want and change their minds half way through, or expect you to read their minds, or neglect to mention details they later inform you are really important. Frequent, reliable communication (progress updates and feedback) is essential to ironing out those little wrinkles.

Don't start work without a thorough understanding on both sides of what is required and how much it will cost. Get that formalised in writing/email.

Don't hand over the final artwork before it's paid for. If you can get half or full payment before you start work (at least after thoroughly discussing the layout sketch), so much the better.

(see also: Clients from Hell)

Good luck!
>>
>>82415682
Find your light source. Where are your shadows coming from. Knowing that, thin lines where light hits, and thicker, harder lines where there are shadows.I usually taper a bit into folds starting thick and thinning down.
Thick lines on heavier weight is pretty smart too. Especially at the bottom of something heavy.
>>
>>82415648
learn how to file invoices. It's not totally necessary but it's legal and prevents you from getting fucked over when it comes time for money. It'd be good to let that person know when you expect to be finished. It's not a bad idea to show the commissioner a rough sketch of what you got planned out, just so they can tweak the placement of certain things to their liking before it becomes a pain in the ass. Showing progress is good too, but as >>82415885
said, do not ever show the finished product until everything gets sorted out.
>>
Dumb question, but how do you market a Tumblr page? That site doesn't have a "front page" like other sites, and it all seems to revolve around people already paying attention to you, so I don't really know where to start.

Also, do you guys wait for people to ask for commissions, or do you go ahead and advertise them?
>>
>>82415648
also... if you're looking for a good crop when it comes to commissioners, mlp oriented stuff(you can draw humanized stuff too, not just the actual ponies) gets a lot of demand and people are more than willing to pay what they need for the product. This really helped me get into the groove of commissioning. I suck tho. granted, you are a good artist and quite well known around /co/ so you probably don't ever have to do that.

Howdy anon! As far as I know, tumblr works off the tagging system. People follow certain tags, which displays content related to that on their dashboard. Tag your artwork appropriately and you'll see that. A big thing is getting other folks on tumblr to reblog and spread your art around the site. As for commissions, it depends on how well known you are or how many followers you have. Some will go ahead and ask, but it's better to advertise it so people know the option is there.

Also, start advertising here. Can I see your tumblr?
>>
>>82416127
I actually don't have a Tumblr, at least not one that's up to date, mainly for aforementioned reasons.

I have a Wordpress for a professional portfolio and a DA for pretty much everything else.

I certainly recommend setting up a tumblr. If you have a bit of a portfolio of things to post, you can try what I did and dump some of it, and then set up a queue for the rest of it. The initial dump tends to be more likely to attract attention, and then the queue holds it. I'd also recommend posting at night, around 9 or 10 o'clock, that's when traffic tends to be highest.

Also, it doesn't hurt to post your tumblr around, though be careful about how you do it. With deviantart, you're fine making a post to advertise it. Here, however, I'd keep it to thread's that you are a regular in. I'd personally recommend only posting a link when asked if you have a blog, and maybe one post to mention that you've set one up.

>>82415885

>>

hey man you're good. I'll follow you there, and on tumblr when you get it set up.
>>
>>82416519
How does the queue work? Do you just upload everything at once then it outputs them one by one?

Also, what kind of tags do you recommend? Generic ones like "digital" and "art", or do you tend to get really niche?
>>
>>82416963

>proof of completed work
You mean for the customer to review before you sign off and deliver the finished piece?

I usually sent a smaller version of the image, with enough detail to check that everything was fine before sending the final, high resolution art. The progress/feedback updates would also be a smaller-than-final size as well.
I wouldn't send something as blocky as that, but more like >>82415299 only smaller.

Also, I keep a smaller version of the art for my gallery.
>>
>>82417049
>Generic ones like "digital" and "art", or do you tend to get really niche?

Fuck that, you definitely want to be descriptive.

>>
>>82417423
So, as many possible tags I can think of and then some?
>>
>>82417049
When you go to post something, instead of hitting "post," click the drop down menu and select "add to queue."

You can edit/organize things in your queue under the Account > Queue tab. You can set how often it will post, and you can select a time range for it to be posted, which is weird, but it is what it is.

As for tags, be descriptive. If it's fanart for a show, try to hit the major names for it. For example, if it's a drawing of Korra, you should tag it as "the legend of korra," "legend of korra," "korra" and "TLOK." Clothes make for good tags, too. If your drawing has a tank top, crop tank or tank top in it, make it known.

You can also test the waters a bit by simply starting to type something and seeing what pops up in the autofill.
>>
>>82417468
Basically
It's like casting a net. the larger the better. Try not to lie or be misleading about the content but other than that, the more the better. You might even want to use all the synonyms you can think of as well, i.e. "DAT ASS" butt, big butt, booty, ass, junkintrunk...
>>
>>82417049
>>82417468
Bear in mind the first 5 tags are the most important so include your tumblr name as one of those.

So I'd suggest:
>yourtumblrname
>artists on tumblr
>fanart
>adventure time
>fionna

first before
>towel
>titties
>etc

Some people use tags for stream of concious commentary which, while fascinating, isn't really searchable.
>>
>>82417182

I can't it's not a pic for a Christian board
>>
>>82417702
>>82417510

Thanks. This is a big help.

One more question: if, for example, I tagged something as "The legend of Korra", would that still count if someone were to just search "Korra" since it's part of it?
>>
>>82417963
Personally I'd reserve 'The Legend of Korra' for the franchise and 'Korra' for the specific character.
>>
>>82417702

>>
>>82419391
It's looking very good, but you're right something is off and that something are her legs. Look at what direction they are in in comparison to her upper and lower body. Her feet stand parallell to the viewpoint (you), but her body is aimed somewhere to the left of the screen. This wouldn't be that much of a problem except her left leg crosses her right. This makes it look like she's very off-balance

Your lines look good!

There are two things that I would focus on, and one of them is a nitpick. That is that the stylization of the hair doesn't quite fit with the rest of the character. Reduce the number of the spikes that you're using to represent hair ends, and figure out the general shape of the hair.

Another thing to focus on is proportions. Remember that the elbows should line up with the navel, and the wrists should line up with the crotch!

Alright, I'm still trying to figure everything out, so this isn't final.

Based on what I've heard from you all, I'm ballpark in stuff at:

> $13 sketches
> $20 lineart
> $25 flat colors
> $30 full color/shading

For sketches and lineart, each additional character would be $5, and $10 extra for flat colors and full color/shading. Simple, geometric backgrounds would be $5. There may be some variation based on complexity.

How to these rates sound? Too high? Too low? Fair? Is there anything that should be changed or otherwise look out for?

Thank you all so much, you've been an enormous help so far!
