Lucasfilm are following the legacy and lore that Lucas left. That Jedi don't choose their color, and will USUALLY get blue/green. But Yellow, White, and Purple exist in rare cases. And Red too, but we don't know where Red ones come from. In Legends, they were synthetic, but who knows in Canon. Maybe some Sith trial onMorabandto get them.
In the case of white, we only got that color like 5 years ago, so it's not out of the question for more rare colors to show up.
We also don't know what each color means, and why they get assigned to a Jedi. All we know is the Jedi who get Yellow are all Temple Guards. Some anons speculated that maybe the Yellow ones are man-made too, and given specially to Temple Guards, but I find that idea a bit farfetched. I think, in my opinion, Yellow crystals are gifted specifically to the Jedi that are destined to be guardians of the Temple. Just fits with the lore better I think.
Purple and White are a complete mystery. I hope they eventually answer this stuff. I don't want them to take away the mysticism of it all, but it's just sort of weird that there are randomly rarer colors with no explanation as to why certain Jedi are chosen to use them.
But, I digress, Disney has said nothing about restricting the use of Lightsaber colors. Just last year Ahsoka showed up with brand new white ones.
I personally think Rey is going to get a dual-sided Yellow Lightsaber, and Pablo can cause a sea of nerdgasms in the Ep 8 Visual Dictionary where he confirms that it is an old Jedi Temple Guard design.

Disney haven't said anything, this has ALWAYS been the lore regarding Lightsaber colors, even before TCW. It's why, in AotC where we first see all the Jedi in their glory, they're 99% blue/green with Mace's Purple Lightsaber as the rare exception.

That's honestly not a bad idea at all. If they REALLY wanted to make other colors more common, they could explain that Illum produced only Blue/Green, and that the other Crystals just come from other locations.
I don't think that there is anything yet in-universe that would discredit that if they chose to go down that route. They could just update that Databank article, no problem.

I was thinking from TFA that Rey using her staff could indicate a possible Dual-Sided Lightsaber in her future, and her stunt double using a staff still is further indication that Rey wont be sticking with Anakins Lightsaber. I really want some tomb-raiding adventures with Luke and Rey
The only part of that obviously fake Episode VIII leak that I liked wasthe parallel to Empire where finn/poe are captured and Rey wants to leave her training earl to go help them, but instead of counseling her against it Luke says he has his own way of doing things and actually goes with her to help fuck up Kylo and Snoke. It's nice pottery and shows that Luke has truly become a master in his own right and rejected some of the teachings that caused Yoda and the old Jedi Order to fail.

I always liked the EU thing where the colour of the crystal represented the branch of Jediism that the users followed, with blue being more saber arts (guardians), yellow being more philosphy and nature of the force (consular) and green being a balance of the two (sentinal).

Where did that system start? Was it Kotor? I guess it makes sense within the games, and clearly they took the idea of temple guards using yellow from the sentinel association but I've never liked it as an in-universe explanation
I prefer the explanation that the jedi just had set places where they'd go for crystals (like in TCW) and when you found the one that was attuned to you it was yours, green or blue or whatever (but for whatever reason most of them naturally just form as green or blue)
The old EU story about how Mace Windu had to basically climb Space Everest to get his purple crystal should be recanonized though I think
Make it so that rare color crystals are very difficult to find or in extremely dangerous areas so it doesn't make much sense for young padawans to get their first ones there
Yellow crystals might come from a planet full of natural dangers and beasts for example, so only older Jedi are allowed to go harvest those specifically for the temple guards

Because both of them together wouldn't have beat Sidious, even if they could have, they didn't have a lot of time to operate while on a planet where the entirety of the Republic almost thinks they attempted to overthrow it with Clone Troopers abound. It was their only shot at Palpatine.

Not forever though, once Padme showed up and he Force Choked her, and he realized he had killed her and the babies in this case (seeing as there is no medical droid), Vader's rage would have been threefold and he'd have become even stronger, and left Mustafar. Then found out about Palpatine's assassination. You now have a Vader without the hindrance of the suit growing stronger and stronger, as Palpatine said "Even if you strike me down, Vader will become stronger than either of us" to Yoda.
That and they had no idea where Vader was at the time, Obi-Wan talked to Padme about it remember, she refused to say, so he boarded her ship in order to find him. Yoda and Obi-Wan split up because they figured that they could create a chance, take down Vader, the Chosen One, who if he got too powerful as time went on, it would be too hard to ever take him down, whereas Palpatine could be taken down in the future, his power is finite, which is why he has that whole deal of wanting to become an immortal Force God.

Starkiller almost ruined the movie for me. I basically need to create all sorts of headcanon rules for it to sit well with me even a little bit. Its way too big and makes the Death Star (what is supposed to be essentially the most important threat in the whole Star Wars continuity), and makes it look like a pussy bitch. On top of that, they take down Starkiller so easily, it makes the Death Star look even MORE like a pussy bitch.
On top of that, the First Order should have had nowhere near enough funds to make something that is essencially 10x the size of the Death Star. They are only a fraction of what the Empire was and somehow can create superweapons that are that fucking big? They were supposed to be doing this in secret according to the novels.
If I could change one thing about The Force Awakens, it would make Starkiller Base into a moon-sized weapons manufacturing factory that the Resistance needs to destroy. Instead of blowing up the New Republic planets, the movie would cut to First Order agents assassinating New Republic representatives of the planets.
Doing this would allow the Death Star to keep the charm that it had in the Original Trilogy, and would make things work a bit better continuity wise. Starkiller was such an unimportant part of the plot in the first place, it being a superweaon was even distracting from the plot. Making it a weapons factory makes it feel like a side story, which is what it was supposed to be

Also, I can't say I'm a fan of the fact that Maul is still alive. At this point it's starting to get a bit silly.

I think Yoda sent them (especially Ezra) to see where Jedi that fight in armies see what happens to them(as in they ultimately lose in the end). But other than that, it's just to show that Yoda is still a fool at times and doesn't know what he's talking about all that much. You have to remember, Yoda also thought that Vader couldn't be turned back to the light and had to be destroyed, even though Vader was the person to ultimately defeat Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious.
