this doesn't make logical sense as a sentence.

So how bout them comics eh? How's your storyboarding coming along?
>>82330729
>this doesn't make logical sense as a sentence
Uh, fuck you? Explain how.
>Want to tell stories based on real world events
>Not sure where the cut-off point is for context. (because most of the events i want to do are a perfect chain, and if you cut the chain too soon they're never as amusing or cathartic.)
>Comic isn't set in real life so don't want the entirety of history to be real events.
:^(
>>82330899
i THINK i understand what you mean..
Just let the context be implied. and if it's not real life, then make it allegories. people will get it. anyone familiar with lincoln will understand why the tall-hatted copper emperor was assassinated without you having to explai their version of the civil war
>>82330899
Be very careful about doing a "ripped from the headlines" story. It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do one and not have it almost immediately feel dated.
>>82329635
I like this. Cool character design.
If I could change anything, I would draw less visual noise. The little marks all over the place are too much. Less is more, I'd say.
>>82331041
shit i love those marks. they give a feeling of texture
however that only works if things are MEANT to be kinda rough and rubbly and scrubbly.
I've started working with non photo pencils again. Gonna be inking these character portraits to finalize these character designs. So hyped~
>>82331150
Her boobs are different sizes and shapes.
>>82331207
But to be fair, she's holding her arm up so that'd definitely affect the shape.
>>82331207
It's because her arm's up. I'd think that would be right, since it would be raised a bit, yeah?
>>82331150
>that hand
>>82331150
Her hands back to front. The thumb would be on the inside
>>82331373
Actually, the hand is correct.
>>82331373
>>82331479
Yeah, I think it's supposed to be correct, but that line that goes through the palm really should not be there, at least not like that.
>>82331560
I just realized that I fucked that part up.
I guess I should be investing in white out? Does white out show up after being scanned? I've never actually had to white anything out after inking before.
>>82331373
>>82331479
>>82331560
The thumb's on the correct side, but the whole palm is fucked up.
>>82331633
Does this pencil not erase?
>>82331675
It does, but I only realized it after >>82331560 pointed out the line. I had already inked the hand by the time I looked at the thread.
A boy and girl, love, etc etc.
>>82331633
I have no experience with white-out, but I guess it works and doesn't show in the scan (after some modifications). It's important to be sure the pencils are ''correct'' and ready before inking. I know your pain when you realize, usually mid-inking, that the picture doesn't really work.
Anyway, that's why I'm in love with digital drawing at the moment. I drew my own hand real quick to show how it ''should'' look like more or less. Obviously I'm not perfect either, but I tried.
>>82332043
memes find a way
>>82331710
Ah. In my limited experience with inking I've preferred to just start over. Depends how far through you are though.
>>82332152
Thank you, I'll keep that as a reference if you're cool with that.
>>82332295
I decided to start over anyways, it was good practice getting back into physical inking.
>>82332422

There are a lot of those.
How are you going to stand out?
>>82333475

>>82333490
That may have been true 15 years ago but there are way too many "good art" webcomics now/
>>82329635
I like this a lot.
Minor quibble: I think her hand should maybe be more clutched against the moss in the last color panel. It looks kind of flat to me now.
>>82331633
I've used white out and white guache. They both work, but it is easier, imo, to just fix the problem digital.
These days I try to plan the fuck out of everything to avoid the necessity of this.

>>82334714
>WHY AM I STILL IN THIS THREAD
Nigga I've been in these threads since it was in the single digits and I still don't even have a comic.
I've come to the conclusion that these threads are uber comfy, and it's nice to chat as well as give feedback to people who share the same hobby as you, especially since there aren't really a whole lot of good comic creation communities.
Just know we're all in this thread for the same thing. You're in good company.

>if i get through them i'll no longer be able to write that character properly, but if i make them 'get better' they won't be identifiable to anyone else who can understand the problems.
sometimes i think the only times i get creative is when creating problems.
>>82335284
i think people want to see those identifiable people getting better
>>82335346
but they're not better themselves so it just removes their identifiability while not providing a practical solution since it's almost certainly (a) irrational or (b) largely beyond personal control
at least that's usually how i see it. "oh, i thought they were like me, but nope. that solution is either impossible to recreate or outwith my reach. looks like i'm still alone."
>>82334857

If you don't enjoy making comics for yourself then maybe you should consider picking up a new hobby. Do something you love.
If you're making comics for attention you're in the wrong game buddy. The chance to strike gold with a webcomic these days is pretty slim.

>>82335783
maybe he's just embarrassed. actual posters make up a small minority of 4chan users. I imagine there are a lot of lurkers who keep their comics to themselves, probably because it's embarrassing 1 page per 2 week deviant art tier garbage.
>>82335408
>not providing a practical solution
i thought it went without saying that you write that part in. you're writing something based on your own experiences, so you write in how it got better for you.

No, I tried making a comic a few years ago but I didn't feel any connection to the characters so I'm doing another.

No one is perfect. People cope with their problems in different ways. No one is going to have an epiphany and suddenly be all better (that's not how it works IRL). Recovering bit by bit and growing with their friends along the way is WAY more compelling than "hurrdurr I psycho now im not".
Also, develop them beyond their mental issues holy shit. No one's going to care about them if they're just one note incarnations of your problems.

I hate that one guy around here. You know the one.
(Oh fuck, is the anon above talking about me? I hope not..)
So, what are you guys's reasons for wanting to make a webcomic?
I have a lot of stories I want to tell. And I want to be good enough to have enough readers that I can visibly throw the fandoms into turmoil with all the twists and turns I've got cooking.
I won't lie. I really want a slice of the glory pie too. I know that it'll never be the case, but in my heart I like to believe in all my delusions of grandeur that I'm a good-enough writer with interesting takes on tropes that even a total social autist like me could get legions of adoring fans. God, I want to make people feel things so bad.Now if only I would get off my ass and learn how to draw. Unfortunately said ideas REALLY need me to be able to convey subtle emotion.
>>82337539
I want to draw pretty pictures.
I also wish someone would draw smut fanart of my stuff.
>>82337539
I think a lot of us in that share those sentiments. You can look at some of the fan bases around /co/ like RWBY or SU however you want, but you have to admire the creators of those series for being able to create something to rally enough of a crowd to keep generals going, discussing things from lore to predicting what's going to happen next to waifu/shipping shit.
I hope I can create something like that as well. I want to jump in anonymously and speculate with the readers for fun, or drop little hints that will get readers wondering what the fuck is going to happen.
At the end of the day though this is all for my amusement. I've been drawing comics since I was really young with just some printer paper and a mechanical pencil. So many good memories of rushing home from school so I could grab my drawing materials and sit down at the coffee table to some Cartoon Network/Toonami just to draw silly little comics for hours.
I just do it because it reminds me of some of the best times of my life.
>>82337539
I figured that if nobody else was going to write the comic that I would want to read, I'd do it.
Also writing is the only skill I've ever spent developing for the entirety of my worthless life so if I can make a living doing that, I'll have purpose. It's worth a shot, at least.
>>82337813
Well fuck, Anon. You've got more experience going for you than most of us.
Care to share? Maybe you can be the overseas equivalent of One.
>>82337539
I like to write/draw webcomics because I just love to come up with ideas, settings, situations, characters, and plots. I'm always thinking on something new to try.
So far I've drawn about 5 or 6 webcomics, though I'm currently focusing on just two of them (three, technically, but these two are being weekly updated).
I don't deny I would like to do more with my stuff, but right Now I'm quite happy just knowing that people enjoy what I draw and write.
>>82337539
I'm making up for my ability to not know how to use Unity by drawing comics of the game I want to make.
I read too much manga. All my comic ideas are weeb ideas where the characters have Japanese names and take place in Japan because they deconstruct common shounen and shoujo tropes.
Is there any hope for me, /co/?
>>82338274
I remember back when I used to do that when I was younger.
As always, first step is admitting it, second step is to fix it. You know it's no good for you, so you could just like... not do that as opposed to doing it.
>>82338236
That kinda sounds like me.
My comic was originally a game I was working on in Unity. I got really far in prototyping and was having fun, but making a game is very slow and time consuming with barely any reward apart from "Oh hey I made this object interact with this button" and being so amazed by it that you spend the better half of the day playing with it rather than making progress.
So I just quit and turned my idea into a comic.
Finished this page!

>Damn, I vas hoping zht ve vould be in an arena
>so I could rip off someone's head,
>show it to zhe audience,
>und make a top tier movie reference
>>82337539
>wanting to make a webcomic.
Man, it seemed like a good idea when I was 18. Seven years ago. Fucking Christ, I've been friends with my artist for seven years this August. Time fucking flies.
I guess I want to create because there is so much shit. So much inferior quality items out there. Because there is no barrier to entry. Because there is no gate with which to keep. And while these things can be awful, they can also be good. And I want to put out stuff that people can look at and see it as being of moderate consumable quality.
Honestly, I'd be better off going back to writing short stories and dating sims. But my project gets me excited, mostly because I'm able to do stuff with it that I wish other people would've done with their stuff.
So maybe I'm creating because I'm so easily disappointed with the lack of things I'd want to see. Or that I would have wanted to see when I was really into reading webcomics proper.
It is a curious place to be.
>>82338097
If that is a comic about cooking, I'm in. That's a fun little sub-genre that can be such a treat to look at.
>>82338274
Take a step back and question why you need it that way; or over-expose yourself to it and get burnt out; then what you've got left are the bare bones. I've been there with things before, you can get away from it. Though if you do a completely played straight story in Japan done by a westerner; more power to you.
I'd love to see a western directed style of Japanese Horror that utilizes the best of both worlds for the sake of causing discomfort and dread; rather than the usual dumbed down stuff.
>>82335463
Posting your shit here would guarantee views. Do not hide behind a mask, reveal your work and let it be viewed, judged, and potentially appreciated. If you do not venture, you do not gain; bucko.
>>82329635

>>82339605

I was hoping someone else will point it out for me.

>>82337977
I'd hardly to call it experience.
I don't really know what I could share that you or anyone in the thread could take something away from.
I was never taught how to draw or how to write, nor did I do any of it as a job. I was just influenced by a lot of things. Comics, cartoons, movies, anime, games. Everything gave me ideas that excited me, and I wanted to express them, so I just turned those ideas into comics, which ended up being a lot of fun for me. I shared them with my friends and they all enjoyed them but that was it. I didn't have a scanner or a camera so it's not like I could upload them to some site for others to read. It was purely for my own amusement.
It was exciting, coming up with ideas and plot twists that surprised me and made me eager to put them on paper. Then eventually I had a full comic that I was very proud of since I made it. So i'd just keep reading it over and over, always amazed because it was something I created.
Sorry for the shitty image.
I have a box full of most of my old comics from around age 10 to 16 or whenever I stopped drawing for a long period of time. I made a lot of comics before age 10 too but lost them all.
Looking through it this is all just some crazy/edgy/autistic DBZ inspired "*teleports behind u*" shit, but it was a lot of fun to do and brought me a lot of enjoyment.
I'm debating printing a label titled "Autism Goldmine" to slap on the box.
This is why I do it though. I do it because it's something I enjoy doing. Everyone has something that they love doing and brings them lots of joy, so they just keep doing it. Even if I only have a one person audience i'll continue to do it, and I always have at least one person in my audience because I make my comics for me first and foremost.
This is why I'm in these threads. I enjoy seeing others who share the same passion as me and encouraging them in any way I can.
Do what you love.Sorry for the wall of text.

Although I would like to create something more meaningful one day - a comic with engaging story, impressive art, and so on - right now the comic I'm working on is serving as practise. It's helping me get used to making comics, working to a regular deadline, and also steadily learn new things artistically. Because of that, I don't care too much about THIS comic getting views, so long as it does its purpose of getting me into the routine of practise.
However, when I do get around to a 'proper' comic I'll probably aim for the same thing you said about throwing your fandom into turmoil.
I used to write fanfics years ago and I fucking LOVED when readers were shocked by twists or couldn't wait til the next chapter and so on. It was great to think that something I'd created could have that effect on people. I'd like to create a webcomic one day that people get similarly invested in.
I don't care so much about fame or fortune. Dont get me wrong, it'd be nice to have a following and to earn money from my work, but I never expect to garner the legions of adoring/paying fans to the point where I can live off the comic earnings alone.
At the end of the day, it's a hobby that I enjoyand keeps me occupied enough to forget that I don't have a girlfriend
>>82345018
the hos come with the fame tho, so if you treat that hobby right with hard work and dedication, it'll treat you right with a ho or two
>>82345048

I want people to talk about my characters the way they talk about ones from other comics and shows. i want there to be fandom, speculations, shipping, excitement over what's going to happen next.. i want people to give enough shits to fucking edit a wiki
and i want it to happen a long time ago, because if it happened now a lot of that would be pretty impossible.. since it's nearly over. or at least most of it is behind us.
>>82337813

You'll always have me as a fan, anon-chan.
but I'm probably not enough to satisfy you. If you go the same route everyone else always eventually does, and start tearing it out of yourself and tossing it in the trash, i'll understand.. but i'll be disappointed.

yeah i think youre like, the better version of me

Wow, that's a lot of googling for me. Haven't heard over half of those names, but I'm glad you brought them to my attention.
I'm looking for something different and fresh for my occult detective comic, cause I'm so sick of vampires, werewolves and ghosts. Hopefully your suggestions will help.

A question to all:
Do your parents/close family/friends know about the comic you're working on? If not, why not? If so, what is their opinion on it?
>>82345898
I find most tired monsters get a breath of fresh air if you bring them back to their roots.
I mean, werewolves being witches wearing magic belts rather than being a curse related to the phases of the moon, vampires that grow fat and bloated with blood in their graves while causing disease and death around them rather than Anne Rice-style bad boys, ghosts that, uh, okay ghosts actually get pretty close to vampires when you go back a bit but you get the point.
>>82345938
And its done! I hope yall like it! ^^

*NOTE: just like my demon juice project there are two different stories in one here that take place on either a left or a right continent

It'd be better to use commas before or after addressing a person.
>She's crazy baby.
and..
>I got this baby
..sound a bit silly and the lines lose their real meanings without the commas.
>>82341797
>Not having them make even a few friends along the way.
Faggot pls. It's not characters that make a story interesting - it's how people react to them.
>>82347226
>Not having them make even a few friends along the way.
In a character relatable primarily for their personal problems, "has friends" is an immediate relatability killer.
People can react to you without you having any friends.
>>82345018
>Although I would like to create something more meaningful one day - a comic with engaging story, impressive art, and so on - right now the comic I'm working on is serving as practise. It's helping me get used to making comics, working to a regular deadline, and also steadily learn new things artistically. Because of that, I don't care too much about THIS comic getting views, so long as it does its purpose of getting me into the routine of practise.
That my plan right now when I get around to it. Have a shitty little comic about a girl befriending monsters and getting them in her party and beating up humans (since the reverse is usually how it is).
>>82346147
>Do your parents/close family/friends know about the comic you're working on?
Only my best bro. Though it's only in it's planning stages.

>If so, what is their opinion on it?

That's why they make them along the way instead of having them from the getgo.
They don't need to be a social butterfly. Having one or two friends they learn to open up to and rely on makes it more compelling.
If you just make them be like "NO. NO FRIENDS EVER.", THAT'LL kill the relatability unless you only wanna resonate with emo teenagers.
>>82343384
I will when I get around to it.
Coloring takes time. Animu eyes are expressive. I want to get as much content out as possible before I keel over.

>>82347528
>That's why they make them along the way instead of having them from the getgo.
and their relatability dies when they make them because the method they use isn't re-creatable.
if it's supposed to be a personal story, and it's written by an author with no friends for people with no friends, giving them friends only works when the author makes friends and is writing from experience, and from that point on the relationship between the author and the reader is fucked.
is crab-bucketing a good idea? no, but if you're one of the crabs out of the bucket don't expect those still trapped inside to relate to you when you got lucky in escaping.

My mom knows but I don't tell her about the subject matter. She asks too many questions. I'm also afraid she will yell at me about how it's demonic.
My friends are very supportive. They read all my updates and give me feedback and vote for me on TWC.
Does anyone just look at webcomics as a whole and just feel underwhelmed sometimes?
Don't get me wrong, I love making my comic, but like... 1 page a week is just such an underwhelming amount of content and information to feed to your audience every week.
I just feel like it's severely underwhelming sometimes and i'm kidding myself thinking i'm keeping anyone entertained with a couple frame page week-by-week.
I just wish I could produce more content or present it in a way that there was more for the readers every week.
Any thoughts or input on the matter?
>>82349063
Who says people are reading 1 strip a week though?
I can't stand reading story-based comics a page a week. If I discover one I like, I usually a) go back to page 1 and read everything so far, and b) bookmark the site and come back in several months, when there's a huge chunk of stuff to read at once.
>>82349063
I dream of someday being able to release a 20-page chapter per week a la Shonen Jump.
Black and white with screen tone and only the occasional color page. Coloring takes a long time. I wouldn't bother unless it's vital.
>>82339796
>If that is a comic about cooking, I'm in. That's a fun little sub-genre that can be such a treat to look at.
Not exactly. Bits & Bytes is a webcomic about a restaurant for videogame characters, so it's mostly focused on videogames.
There are a few pages about cooking, though. Pic very related; Gretha can't cook.
>>82349222
So sorta like MGDMT? Nice.
>>82349063
Most people read several webcomics, so even if each one is just updating at a page a week that's still a lot of content for the reader. Very, VERY few people read JUST ONE webcomic.
Reply to this post with the number of webcomics you're keeping up with right now.

two page update! silo's getting mad!
Been working on my April/May comic (combined both into one full length (24 page) story instead of two short ones), figured I'd post the first five pages and see what /co/ thinks.
Decided to go back to digital inking, mostly to play with screen tones in Mangastudio. Never used 'em before.
>>82349063
Well, first off, you don't have to do one page a week. That's something you do if you have a bit of a perfectionist streak and want every page to be its absolute best.
Nobody's saying you have to make every page some great work of art if it lets you tell the story better as a result.
But on the other hand, it's not like you'll ever be able to make pages faster than people can read them. I'm updating weekly myself at the moment, and while I'd like to eventually get up to two or three pages a week, for now I'm fine with this pace because it lets me make every page a piece of art that I won't worry about having thousands of people look at over the years. My comic definitely is designed for the archive binge read, rather than the "check it once a week to see what's happened".
And that's all I've got done so far. Everything's written and most everything is drawn, just need to finish up and ink everything. Plan to put out the rest as I finish; should be about 3/week.
>>82349936
Looks neat overall. You're the same guy who posted the one with a gnome and human fighting a mimic a few months back, right?
>>82350082
>dungeon delver
Honestly, I feel like once you're using the term "dungeon", you might as well go all the way and call it dungeon crawling.
Like, any universe where DnD adventurer is a viable profession, I'd expect it to be a little RPG-ish.
Also, doesn't this town have a sewer maintenance service? You'd think she would go to those guys first if she wanted to go into the sewers.
>>82350271
"Dungeon delver" is alliterative though. Alliteration is awesome.

>>82347921
You're kissing ass.
>>82350271
Yup, that's me.
I actually thought about going full on "RPG' with it, with the comic (if not the characters) aware of levels and classes and such, but decided not to go quite that far. "Adventurer" is definitely a viable career choice, tho.
>sewer maintenance service
….yeah, that would've made things easier. Whoops.
>>82351045
Thanks! I feel like traditional and digital both have pros and cons for me, but overall, I think I'm a bit better digitally. Certainly a lot cleaner.
>>82352803
You can easily throw in a quick reference to a sewer maintenance service, something like "they went down to investigate but none returned." It's not too late to apply that plot spackle!
>>82352665
No, I just like it.
What do you think of Tapastic? Is it a good place to put a webcomic?
>>82352945
I hate it.
I hate it so much.
Every single aspect of the Tapastic interface is annoying to me. If a comic is exclusively on Tapastic I personally will not read it. Any other hosting site or style of reading a comic is superior. That scrolling shit is fucking terrible, I hate it so much. I'm fucking triggered just thinking about it. I'm serious. It's the worst.
>>82352945
it is okay.
>>82353064
They just care to be Mobile friendly, I guess
>>82353134
You can do that on your own site so easily, though. Making a website responsive is easier than ever now. There are multiple gimmicks for Wordpress that will do it.
>>82352945
I have a comic on Tapas and in a regular site. I get tons of pageviews in Tapas. Their community is huge, I guess ppl is not so atracted to visit lonely websites anymore.
>>82353292
My experience was the exact opposite. My regular website did and continues to do quite well while my Tapastic site was so anemic I just shut it down after a few months.
Making some very significant progress on the building I'll be using in the intro sequence of those animations I'm working on. It's still not even close to being finished but at least it's shaping up more now. I'm kind of nervous about how I'm going to do lighting and shadows with this many complex shapes though.
>>82352945
It's ok. I don't mind the scrolling. And it's nice that the page isn't really endless, it cuts off after the page or chapter, has the comment section and then the new page begins. Just an endless page with no breaks would probably feel too overwhelming, but the way they've set it up works fine for me.
