Here's a little history lesson for you, kids.
The /co/ General Drawthreads have, since time immemorial (or at least since 2008 or so), been primarily about producing fanart of comic and cartoon characters. The earliest drawthreads were usually started by one artist taking requests, though over time they started to encourage other artists to contribute.
(Pic related was drawn around 2009 and the only thing that's changed is that image references are now pretty much standard with requests.)
When Adventure Time became popular, you started to get "Adventure Time Drawthreads" (specifically for AT), and the regular drawthreads became "General Drawthreads", because they weren't associated with any one particular series or character. Note that this was long before the idea of "X General" threads, which is why they're a "General Drawthread" and not "Drawthread General".
As the drawthreads were just about fulfilling fanart requests, those people who wanted indepth critiques of their artwork started to create "Work On Your Art" threads. As the opening image was a picture of Batman with the text "Stop procrastinating. Work on your art." they became known as Batman threads. They were places were /co/mrades could post general comic or cartoon drawings they had made, in order to get feedback on them.
Being /co/, it was only natural that some people in the "Work On Your Art" threads would be comic creators. Eventually another split occurred with the creation of the "How's Your Webcomic" threads, which were focused on those people creating comic strips.
There are also "O.C. Donut Steel" threads, for people to share pictures of their original characters.
So we have the board culture today where there are four similar, but subtly different, threads:
General Drawthreads - for fanart requests
Work On Your Art - for critique of illustrations
How's Your Webcomic - for feedback on comic strips
O.C. Donut Steel - for original characters
