I think a big part of it is what element of a piece of fiction draws you in and sustains your interest. For me it's almost always heavily rooted in the characters, I get attached to them and want to see what happens to them. The issue obviously being that if the quality of the piece of fiction goes down I still care for the character, so I find myself unable to forget about them and get roped in for the long haul.
The most sad part of Homestuck to me is the thought of how even little changes could have made it so much more enjoyable, less is more and all that. Fuck, I was so expecting a huge finale walkaround, that was going to be the thing which gave closure all round, ham-fisted closure, but closure nonetheless.

Homestuck ending might be contributing a little bit too. I think I tried to pretend that I don't care but in reality Homestuck still means a lot to me because it represents a time in my life when I was a lot more optimistic and felt like my life had direction. But it has been so many years and now it's over and my life hasn't really changed and I failed to accomplish a lot of my goals.
