I actually watched this episode to judge this reboot for myself. PPG is my favorite cartoon of all-time but this, this was just bland. No heart, bad jokes, shitty action, nothing that drew me to the original.
McCracken said his main inspiration for the action was anime and Jay Ward cartoons for the humor. The reboot is just uninspired.

No this was a mid-season 1 episode where they had no money, about 6 background ponies made total, and outsourced like 20 out of 26 episodes to the flips.
In newer seasons, they randomly generate ponies on the fly for crowd scenes, and most of the season 1 background ponies have become actual characters.

I'm working with a friend on his animation, I'm a designer for objects and shit, and since February I've created over 300 different items and objects, each unique and not just a changed color of the other model. Then I see how people in the fucking networking business have one model and paste it everywhere with minor alterations without even trying to hide that it's the same thing, and it makes me wonder why they don't care.
So many god damn cartoons right now have more effort in them than this show. They're just speeding through the production so fucking fast so they can get their "muh context" and "progressiveness" out there, that they've went from using a fucking desert background that I called out, to using fucking models from other cartoons.
Are they going to resort to stealing background music? Stealing character voice lines for a crowd talking moment from another show? These are real questions that I bet will be answered within the next 5 episodes we haven't seen yet.

Buttercup in the 3rd frame is about how it was in the old show, but they keep trying to show depth in 2D and it looks awful. In the exact same frame, Blossom is supposed to be farther away but because nobody in this show has shadows it just looks like she's tinier than Buttercup.
