Right, what I'm suggesting is that the crystal gems consciously develop/design their summonable weapons, similar to how they can alter their forms when they regenerate. However, quartzes and other "battle" gems may well be born with innate weapons, who the fuck knows. Even if they aren't, it's easily believable that Steven could've retained the blueprint for the shield that Rose designed.
Pearl's line in Gem Glow is just weird no matter what. Why didn't she say "it's your mother's shield?" Because they wanted to hold off on that information, that's the only conceivable reason.

Well a good baseline is to see what traits multiple gems can do. If Pearl and another Gem can both do something, chances are pretty high that any Gem can do it.

Yeah seriously. I know there is the whole "everyone's just used to them" excuse, but there is still the rarity compared to other places. The Pyramids have been in Egypt for a long time, so the Egyptians living near it are used to seeing it, but tons of people still find them interesting. If the slaves and priests and pharaohs there could be talked too, it'd be flooded with scientists and historians wanting to here what they had to say. But the gems in the show attract about as much attention as crazy cat ladies.

yes, some gems are better at shifting, yes all gems can shift. but i think you're missing the point about why amethyst can do it better. it's because she has fun doing it, hence she practices. every other gem we've encountered has taken a military or analytical view of the world, only shifting when it's necessary to their goals.
it's one of the things that makes her a unique gem, she has no concept of the diamond authority or homeworld society. she's gone completely native to earth, dancing with wolves style.
