this is pretty cute. princess has a bad case of pinhead in a few shots but it seems like it's mostly her hair.
the text is a bit too wobbly, but worse in the first page than the second.
man, you WOULD think the assassins would have learned that. You'd also think they'd have stopped doing the whole 'having a polite chat with her first before jumping to assassination after her first refusal' thing. heh.
but yeah i dig your art. draw more comics

but thanks! I have a lot of improving to do but I'm starting a big collab with a writer and ofc I'll be doing a bunch more assignments for my class. I AM majoring in comics afterall.

I think they're right, though. What is trying to be communicated in the first panel? Seems kind of an awkward shot.

>>81378542
Really like your marks, man. One thing that I find a bit visually confusing is the summoning of the fireball. Do you plan to color this? If not it takes my eyes a few moments to figure out what is going on in that panel, it's too reliant on the next one.

Just my 2 cents
>>
>>81385207
i suppose i'm pretty bad with shots, i never do them myself. just endless repetitive newspaper comic poses.. sometimes i try varying it up. i never would have thought of a chest-height shot unless something was happening to her tits or something... but the professionals all seem to do all different kinds of shots.

Prepping for a switch from black and white to color, trying to establish color palettes, pardon the unfinished figures/hands

Think this colored-in pencil-lines style will do well for the comic as a whole if I tidy up the lines sufficiently?

yeah this just needs more tidying and it'd be okay. well, some of them are fuzzier than others, so that needs tidying too. but i could see this working. reminds me of some book illustrations

This week on the Sisters; Erin pics up a bad habit. Also boobs. Gonna be a fun update come Thursday.
Got some web comic review talking points done because I was scouring the web to see who even does that and there are...so so very few. Might have to get back into it on principle.

>>81396612
Fish Club sounds awesome.
I remember seeing our thumbnails for this before, and I gotta say I really like how you're doing your colors here. Really helps carry the "whimsical directionless youth" tone. I'm also really enjoying these three characters and if this is to serve as introduction for your wider project, I think it'll be cool seeing how these kids are when Oliver falls into their life.

>>81394300
>That awkward silence.
Man, I hate that. Especially in dire circumstances, it just really interrupts this flow you expect to be going on. I went on a run once and saw a guy choking out a pregnant woman; and I had to run to a house and talk to some kid to get them to wake up their parent so I could use a phone, but he was just spending the night and it wasn't his house and I'm like "kid, you're answering the door at 6 in the morning in the slums and it isn't even your house? Can I talk to an -adult-?"
Art is good, story seems like it might be interesting. You got a site/link?

>>81378643
I gotta wonder what excuse she told her husband so she could run down an alley and beat a guy up. Digging the frustration she's got at choking people out. After awhile the silent takedown method has to get old, and people probably get drool on your arm.

It makes more sense in context, but it's still a bit awkward. Yeah, you can have different "shots" at different heights of the body, but a panel should for the most part be focusing on something you want the readers to be seeing. You could have had the focus more one of the hands gripping the backpack strap.
If you're ever at a point where you are looking at a panel and are thinking I don't know, well professionals do all kinds of stuff whatever, you are not taking the composition of the page seriously enough. At least, that's where I'm coming from, you know? If you are looking for good poses, and different way to do different "camera" shots, you should check out old Harry Lucey Archie stuff. Those comics are dorky, but he really had worked up a great visual language with those characters. Sometimes I just sketch 'em when I wanna loosen up.

Yeah minor thing, looks really good dude.

Didn't see the usual Batman "Work on your art!" thread, so posting here.

Making character art for /tg/ related stuff, figured I'd swing by here and get an opinion on anatomy and all that stuff before going past the sketching phase on this doodle. Supposed to be a tall, rather thin Warlock.
>>
>>81404208
1) Just think about what type of character you want to introduce and think of a suitable way of introducing him, kinda like how in an action movie you always introduce your hero as a ''cool guy'' or if it's a romantic comedy or whatever you show your character doing wacky things because they're loveable and whatever.

2) it's perferable that all things should be part of the plot, or else you have filler, or disjointed storytelling, this does not apply to foreshadowing another possible story, however.

3) Building character is telling a story, and stories are usually told by characters actions and reactions, aka how a character behaves is extremely important to the story because what makes him/her happy/sad/angry is going to be what moves the plot along

4)Just have the ''Hero's Journey'' more or less in mind when writing, it's best to have each scene be as dense as you can make it

5) I'm indifferent to cursing, characters can be angry/happy/sad without resorting to cursing, it also depends on the age group your making this for, either way it's best to not do it too much.

6) Pretty much everything has to revolve around the main plot, a subplot is there to mainly develop a side-character or character behaviour who just couldn't go along with the main story traditionally, in anyway by the end of it it all must fall back on the main plot and influence the status quo like anything else that's happening

7) Subtext means quite a lot, body language, even in comic form can tell you all about a character, so do angles, scene blocking, character postures and placement all can pretty much carry a story on its own, but you have to gather yourself a lot of reference to understand how it works and how it should be done, I personally learned it from watching and studying tons of movies.

This is stuff that mostly depends on you, and the type of story you want to tell. Dialogue can be just used to flesh out characters, some people make comics where all it is is plotless dialogue, and their main interests are in presenting something as a character study.

I think it is cheesy to have swearing that is then censored in some way. You don't have to have swearing, but if you want to depict realistic conversations, even little kids cuss.

Stop cussing!

The rest of that stuff you gotta figure that out for yourself. At least have some sort of rough draft you can then go back on. No point in being overly prepared when creating a new story, everything will always end up changing in some way anyhoo

Pacing is essentially done panel to panel, so having a rough sketch is important so you can see how it reads.

Makes me think of this. I like how this advice reads as a comic, I don't know how it works as advice. It itself is a really well crafted manga, though, so there ya go.

As of now I'm still in the early sketching phase, eventually I'll get to making highlights and adding details like small tears and rips as well as creases in the fabric, for now I'm still erasing and redoing the top half of the robe to get it to match the bottom's layered look better since that one looks far too stiff to me.

Yeah, if you really don't want swearing in your comic, just don't have your characters swear.
There's some comedic potential to be found in inoffensive depictions of swearing like *bleep*s, [censored]s, *********s and grawlixes, but "sh*t" and so on are pointless. If your audience can handle knowing what word's being used, they can handle reading it without an asterisk.

Actually, I can think of one use; if a character is incredibly wholesome and inoffensive, it could be funny to have them speak incredibly mild insults in this way; d*mb, l*me, st***d, j*rk, etc.
I guess there might be other situations where you'd need to both see something being censored and know what's being censored for the point to come across.
>>
>>81405661
Personally I find censorship with bizarre priorities absolutely hilarious. Like "I fucking hate those g*d-damn niggers"

>Introductions can be handled multiple ways, but you should always keep in mind that the audience's first impression is important.
>Every conversation should matter, even if the part that matters is that it doesn't "matter". When your characters converse, they either progress the story or reveal elements of themselves through their interaction. If you want a good example of important dialogue that isn't about plot, look up The Maxx.
>What your character is "about" is entirely dependent on your objectives. What you're writing about and how define whether you're tackling emotions, traits, actions, whatever. There's no right answer to this.
>Never write a story you can't effectively tell in 300 pages or less. That's not to say that you should never go over that, but if you are unable to tell it and make it work with that much room, it's probably got a lot of unnecessary elements and redundancy floating about. Draft your story and think "if i crammed this down to as few pages as possible, how long would it be and where would the beats be placed along the story?"
>Swearing isn't necessary, but some people do swear. Think about your characters, your tone, and your audience and decide what you want to do.

Tapastic is a community of people who are actively searching and browsing for comics. It's generally seen as easier to get eyes on your comic on Tapastic, at least initially, than on your own website.

I still firmly believe you should have ONLY a website that you control, because in the long run it's better for ad revenue purposes (and since you can control EVERY aspect of website design it can be more tailored for your needs and the needs of the fanbase). Tapastic does ad revenue, but its 6 cents per 1000 views (last I checked) which is hilariously low compared to returns for sites with similar view numbers from sites like Project Wonderful.

I also think the Tapastic site design in general is just absolute garbage, completely against how I prefer to read comics, but that's just my opinion. The ad revenue thing is a measurable fact.
>>
>>81413220
>>81413214
>>81413337
I'm not on it yet.

The fact that the numbers can be big, breaks the argument thrown at me.
>>
>>81413475
6 cents every 100 views, not 1000. My bad.

It's still far lower than other advertising opportunities out there that require you have your own website.
>>
>>81413566
I'm sure it will work out phenomenally for you, just like advertising on 4chan did.
>>
>>81413475

>>
>>81413004
>>81413566
>brags about how great Tapastic is for views
>without ever actually trying it himself
>>
>>81413627
Yeah I can't recommend advertising on 4chan. There's a reason the space is so often vacant. It's 80,000 views for 20 dollars. Not ad-clicks, or unique hits. Just views, period.

That information isn't for you, but for anyone curious. With you, you just seem to despise me, and the feeling isn't mutual.

I was just telling people tapastic is fine. Someone may have still been under the misapprehension, if their only exposure to the subject was that last argument I'm referring to.

>>81413812
How would they have found it to begin with?

One of the biggest obstacles facing webcomickers, is people finding your work for the first time. It's the most uncomfortable catch-22 that hardly anyone is talking about, except in the vaguest terms. "It's hard." "Networking is important." "Do fanart." None of them wrong, but all of them vague.

>>81413843
I wasn't talking about money. I was talking headcount. It's fine if other people talk about that, but I wasn't.

>>81413925
Yeah man.
>>
>>81414046
if you thought people were saying you couldn't get VIEWS you misunderstood the argument even worse
>>
>>81414111
I think you're misunderstanding my misunderstanding of anything.
>>
>>81414167
I'm that guy you mentioned in >>81413004. I was referring specifically to revenue, not views. While views and ad revenue tend to go hand-in-hand, I was never talking about views specifically. Just revenue. So yes, you did misunderstand the argument.

But you'll never admit it. Just like you'll never admit that your comic is bland shounen knockoff garbage, and that's why it hasn't become more successful.

No, it's unsuccessful because advertising doesn't work! It's unsuccessful because of sick trolls who dare criticize your comic publicly! It could never be the fault of you, the creator!

I'm not sure why you're bringing up my comic. I hadn't. u:

But yes, if you do have a criticism, it's fine wherever you post it. Just make sure it's objective. And if you want a back and forth that gets a lot more communicated, clearly and concisely, email is the place to do it. There's a few reasons but one of them that requires the least nuance to explain is: "Ah yeah, I thought that too. In the future I was actually thinking (MASSIVE SPOILER)." Every editorial conversation involves revealing one spoiler or another. It's the best way to strategize. Why would I ever do that publicly? Would you? Would anyone?

Again. Not information for you, but the general public, reading these posts. That's my opinion on these issues. I don't make it strictly about me or you or anyone. My goal is to be consistent. And I don't think you treat other people this way. I accuse you of being inconsistent indeed sah!

If you'd like to sling mud, there is no stopping you. But these revenge-sleights and personal vendettas do confuse the rest of us. I mean look at this: >>81415081

People don't know who you are or why you're acting like this. What good is it, if you cause this? Try not to. Yes, I realize I'm trying to appeal to a sense of decency. It's crazy. Just crazy enough to work, maybe.

What are you on dude, the grass in the first panel looks awesome. Like a nice comfy rug. I personally love it. If you wanna try changing it the only thing that comes to mind is making it sharp points, but meh, i prefer comfy fluffy grass.
>>
>>81435543
Well, it's got a few issues that I can see:
The outlined lumps of grass are too blunt. They're exactly the same shapes as the leaves of the bushes in the background. Something sharper might be better.
The grass that's suggested by the jagged edge of shadows is too short and regular. It feels like a well maintained lawn, not a jungle. There's no bare patches, either.

How big of an asshole can protagonist be for people to still like him?
>>
>>81436940

basically as long as their not a mary sue
>>
>>81436979
On related note, how big of an asshole can a character be to still be waifuable by creeps?
>>
>>81437124

3's done, really excited to be almost done with the introduction strips.

Bit of a nitpick, but having your text bubbles all mashed up to the edges of the panels like this feels weird. Have them overlap or put some empty space inbetween.

It's okay, but it's like, Cucumber Quest tier slow, maybe even a little worse, and has a less regular update schedule. They have nearly all the same problems. But yeah, like Gigi, he wouldn't get pooped on nearly as much if he wasn't so easily provoked.
>>
>>81436940
Your audience can enjoy mass murderers as protagonists as long as you handle it well. The main points to focus on are not making them perfect, not having the cast TREAT them as perfect (unless it's dripping with irony and you have at least one foil, see Death Note for a strong example of a beloved monster), and making sure they're distinct and interesting as people.
>>
>>81439554
one last thing
>she gonna trip when she sees me
you mean trip as in trippin'? because that doesnt make sense in this context
>>
>>81436940
Somewhat indirectly showing him do fucked up stuff, Alex for example, the first few scenes of the film doesn't show him beating old people up and raping women directly, the monologues are there to sorta make the audience sympathize with Alex and like him for his personality rather than by what he does, not to mention, every other character around him is an asshole, a coward or a fuckwad that the film doesn't bother to try and make them likeable.

Look on the bright side - if you ever by some quirk of fate find yourself in a situation like having to snipe a man who's taken your dog hostage or do amateur bomb disposal, odds are your hands won't tremble at all.

In Hell your hands are shaky; you forgot to wash out the brush last night; the microns are all the (same) wrong size and the eraser is under the table, again.
Forever.

Motherfucker...
I just got refused into an animation program.
Long story but it was a mistake on part of admissions. The teacher himself who kept helping me with my portfolio was shocked. Since everyone who applied supposed to receive mail saying to go to the portfolio review.
I am so fucked.

I am 25 now.

I need to find a way to into comics.
>>
>>81442067
Make one yourself you lazy shit.
>>
>>81442081

I've got a backlog of comics. They are somewhat shitty and maybe not too appropriate outside this thread. I just feel really down.

Welcome to the amateur comic artist world. Enjoy your stay.
>>
>>81442067
That sucks anon, but remember; there's nothing you can learn in the classroom that you can't learn by yourself.

It's just harder.

Nobody in the illustration world, or animation, or comics, will give a fuck if you were part of an organized animation program or not so long as your portfolio and past work is fuckawesome.
>>
>>81442464
Hey, >>81442067 here. Thanks.
I honestly just needed to hear that, never did before, but thanks to you I feel a little better and today I'm going to go ham on some concept art. I began writing a backlog of ideas that I'll pick from first.
I just managed all my shit since that post to figure out how to go on about this.
>>
>>81442601
Don't be mistaken; when I say it's harder, I mean it's a lot harder. Learning a skill without anyone pushing you forward but yourself is a completely different beast to guided learning. I'm not good at pushing myself, and it took me over half a decade to finally get off my ass and start improving at a reasonable rate.

Maybe I'm just projecting and you're gonna have a totally different experience, but just, watch out you don't let time slip away.

I've already let time slip away for too long
So yeah
I'm consistent now more than before
But only with drawings everyday and not actually producing shit
Aside from this
Thinking of making a lighthearted webcomic about two dads and their sons
Thinking of having each son next to their dad actually be a fuck up and the other dads son instead
You can see ones got sharper hair
And ones more fluffy
The fluffy ones are more aggressive
Stop me if you've seen that before

>Stop me if you've seen that before
That's not bad. Something that's a little bit cliche will give you a lot of role models that you can get inspired by/rip off when you're not sure what to do or where to go. And it will make it easier for you to not get too invested in a project that's almost certain to be deeply flawed because you're a noob.

When's the first update? How many days a week are you going to update?

I'm normally better with a pen
Traditional.
Shit gets done faster.
I agree about the cliche. Been done before but it's not like I ripped off someone. It's just a thing.
Here's a fight scene I whipped up.

Very fun fact: see that equil? I never used it. Could be a good way to draw on paper and get that online, right?

>The teacher himself who kept helping me with my portfolio was shocked.

Probably because your teacher also sucks.
>>
>>81441175
how so?
>>
>>81418326
Not very high, but it's my fault for not keeping up with it.
I was going to upload a new "episode" each time I finished a chapter on my main site, but part of it is just me being too tired to do it once I finish updates, part is me being too busy with work & social life to keep up with more than one site (I haven't been too active on tumblr either)
>>
>>81437124
you're on 4chan and on /co/, you should know that people will waifu anything
>>
>>81439753
i semi-disagree. in order, i prefer overlapping, then squished up against, then a biiiig gap, then empty space between
>>
>>81442067
if it was a mistake, doesn't that mean you can just apply again in 3 months
>>
>>81443752
i like this. and i like the idea of a comic about dads and sons. you add some barbecued meat into that and you've got an instant subscriber
you were the one worrying about how chibi to make them earlier, right? i like this style now, you seem to have a handle on it (for the most part. sometimes eyes drift too far apart) but at this level of detail, i would add noses. just simple sidetriangle anime noses
