Bombing in China too.

>Superhero franchise movie “Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice” slumped at the Chinese box office as it entered its second week of release.

>On Friday (April 1) the film earned $2.57 million (RMB16.7 million) and slipped from first place to fourth in the Chinese box office rankings. That score represents a drop of 85% compared with the previous Friday (March 25,) when it opened in China with $18.4 million as part of a globally coordinated day-and-date release.

I'm not saying there should be sides. I'm saying that you know what it was like here for the past few years. How it was going to break a billion instantly, change cinema, be an Oscar winner, etc.

What do you think is going to happen when the thing bring propped up disappoints?
>>
>>81371509
I literally predicted an 80% drop I think on Monday or Tuesday, and even I'm truly shocked that it came true. If that holds the entire weekend, it's fucked. It'll end up on 700 and change. They'll literally be losing money on it at that level, just like Sony with ASM2.

This isn't the end of the DCEU; WB have invested too much to let it fail and they're balls deep in the gambler's fallacy at this stage, so they'll keep plugging away until something finally works or they end up in chapter 11, but it might well be the end of Batman for a long, long time. Never cast a difficult star who's also a fan of the character.

I'm assuming most of the people here who are DC fans are comic fans and those all have more or less had a VASTLY negative response to these movies.

I'm pretty sure 99.9% of /co/ would like there to be good movies from both Marvel and DC.

They were dumb enough to put the future of the entire franchise in his hands with very little oversight. They signed him for 3 gigantic projects and made him the exec for all other DC films, after he made a single Superman film that received mixed reviews.

WB was scrambling to get this franchise started and so far every decision seems to have been a hasty and ill advised one.
Say what you will about Marvel, but they took their time. They built a world and characters before they threw them into a gigantic blender.

Whenever such a project flops, it's because the makers were more interested in advertising the bigger prospects on the horizon than actually making a good movie on its own.
See also The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

>DC handles its first movie terribly and instead of adressing its flaws in its followup, they just make the flaws even more pronounced

81% is not a normal drop. 60% is fatal for most movies. Say you make $45m opening weekend on a $120m budget. That's actually pretty modest as bigger budgets go - we're getting to the stage where it's more like the average, even though there are still plenty of movies made for a fraction of that - but the domestic from a movie that has an opener like that is going to be roughly $18m the second weekend, 7 the third and 3 the fourth, and the total domestic at that point will be more or less where it finishes - something like $110m, with another 5% to come on top of that in the final 2 months of release.

With a 50% drop that same movie with that same opening weekend would finish on something more like $127m with another 5% to come (in this case another $6.3m, whereas the other example is just $5.5m).

The percentage of the drop matters a lot - and the higher the drop, the worse the end result for the gross will be, because almost nothing recovers at the second or third weekend.

Age of Ultron dropped in fact about 60% between the first and second weekends - $77,746,929 Fri-Sun on we2 compared to $191,271,109 for we1, closer to 59% (which makes a big difference as you can see).

The reason that AoU was able to survive that 60% drop is because it literally made so much money in the first 7 days (and especially the first weekend, which was a lot higher than BvS) that the drop was still to levels that would, on any other movie, be a great *first* weekend. The weekend after that it dropped again - as all movies do - but a more manageable 50%.

BvS has good elements to it, but its main problem is that it has three separate films going on at once. Batman's detective work would make a great film on it's own, but it clashes horribly with Lex's political schemes. I was waiting for Lex to tie the three films together into a single narrative and it didn't happen.
MoS's main story is nowhere near as good as BvS's story threads, but it only has the one story thread. It's a very clean, tight script and you don't lose focus like you do in BvS.

I get that this is a circle jerk thread but lets put up some comparisons.

Furious 7 had a 72% drop after its first week.
Age of Ultron a 74% drop
HP:DHp1 a 66.2% drop
HP:DHp2 an 84% drop
Iron Man 3 71% drop
GotG 67.5 drop
TDK 65% drop
TDKR 76.6% drop
Avengers 63% drop
Deadpool 65% drop

BvS certainly is high on its Friday comparison. That's something that should not be ignored.

But it's still lower a drop than Part 2 of Deathly Hollows which made over a billion. It still has no competition in theaters until May giving it an entire month to be the only blockbuster for audiences.
There's also something to be said about how top loaded some of these movies are meaning a sharp decline after release is expected.

Trend among all the films listed above though is that their opening domestic gross makes up nearly a third to a fourth of their total domestic gross.

Just off that this film should make around 500million alone at home.

Sorry haters the movie is still on track to be a financial success no matter how much you bitch about it online.
