I'm pretty sure the retcon plot has been at least heavily planned since 2013, possibly even earlier. Looking for that house juju was a goal for a long time. What I think was last minute was reviving Vriska.
This page http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=007954 and the speech on the page before it make very little sense in regards as to where (Vriska)'s character actually went. It's brushed off later as just her being melodramatic but I don't buy it, I think she really was originally meant to have a different role, possibly one more similar to the current living Vriska.
God knows why Hussie would do it though. Maybe he thought the Vriska/(Vriska) conflict was too interesting to pass up or something.

2013 is still pretty last-minute, and they could have been looking for any shitty treasure until Hussie settled on a massive deus ex machina device. Either way, it was functionally awful because a) Vriska, b) sprite^2s, c) cluttering up existing updates with shit like oil and hands and password pages (rereading Hivebent right now and it was glaringly irritating I hated the password page), d) keeping this shit going much longer than needed instead of just resolving existing shit, and e) collapsing my investment in the characters even more than the dreambubbles collapsed my view of deaths meaning anything in the comic.
