It seems to me it was less about ideology and more thatSuperman was forced to confront that he himself was the problem. He realized he was wrong to impose his will on the world, regardless of whether or not it would've improved things.
It wasn't about whether communism is right or wrong, but whether the characters are.
In the end feel thatLex was right, but for the wrong reasons, and Superman was wrong, but for the right reasons.[/spoilers] That's how I saw it, at least.
