I think if Giffany had been a guy and it was Candy or Mabel being the chronically dateless person who was the object of his desires, and the episode went more or less the same, that it would still be a good episode. Giffany had good scenes like traveling though the arcade machines (I wish they used pic related though, it was kind of cool) and I liked how she had some ambiguity about her. I think in this case it's mostly just a case of irritation.
Let's say I want to find cute Wendip fan art on tumblr. If I search the Wendip tag, I probably want to see fan art or clips from the show about their pairing, not tons of rants about how Wendy/Dipper is pedophilia because of the age difference and people who like it are pedophilies who should die.
So it's mostly about junk clogging the tag in that case, like having to sift through junk mail or junk e-mail.
When it becomes more is this: let's say I draw fan art of Wendy and Dipper hugging, and then get a bunch of people harassing me, or even trying to dox me and harass me in real life because I must be a pedophile and therefore deserve it, as has happened in some of these cases. Then it's more than just annoying. As we were talking about earlier in this thread, this has also led some people to stop creating content and delete old art out of fear.
People are free to say for example that Wendip is evil. But bullying, threats, and harassment are not okay, especially about something so innocuous.
And by the way, I have seen posts about how Dipper/Wendy is pedophilia and its shippers are pedophiles, so I'm not making this example up. And I've seen the same complaints about Dipper/Pacifica.
