Why are the guys in this series more entertaining than the girls? I mean I signed up for hot fighting girls, but I haven't been able to attach myself to one yet as waifu-tier. The mistake you made was thinking that it's the short hair alone that matters. The character design in general is a massive improvement on the earlier ones including the one used for the rest of Vol 3, her outfit suits her better and even the silly twin blades on her back actually look reall nice when in place.
Her face is also a fair bit improved, in terms of detail and general expression.

I first heard of it on the Death Battle that Yang was in; but though the setting seemed interesting, there wasn't anything that separated it from the dozens of other animes (which I assumed it was) that I haven't watched yet.
Some time later (and this would be around the time PvP aired) I noticed a RWBY video on the YouTube sidebar, but was surprised to see it was by RT (which I knew from RvB, but I'd stopped watching that series during the confusing Freelancer flashback stuff).

I was a Junior in High School and had honestly not seen many Roosterteeth things outside a couple episodes of RvB that I just never followed up on. I remember we were having some kind of meeting about SATs or ACTs or something and everyone was bored out of their mind. So obviously everyone was ignoring the speaker and doing all sorts of other things. My friend said something about this cool trailer he had seen (red trailer) and we watched it during the meeting. Thought it looked interesting so I kept up with it and loved it even during volume 1 (I honestly had no problem with cliche stuff as I hadn't watched any anime at that point so it didn't really bother me much). I still remember that the red trailer came out a day before my birthday, so a fun coincidence.

I saw that RT was coming out with a new series after a season of RvB just finished and they debuted the Red trailer after the finale.
I was honestly skeptical of RWBY way back when because I didn't really think RT was the kind of company to do a sort of series like this. It was also before I started watching anime so my first impression was the typical "oh it's weeb shit" and kind of turned away from it.
