When we left last time, Genis-Vell was on Earth trying to discover a conspiracy against him, and a shadowy figure sent the embodiment of the 90's against him. Let's see where things go from there!
Ah, snarky captions. A classic.
Man, this book really likes calling people turks.
I don't use the word "edgy" often, but my god, this guy looks edgy.
"Adam X the X-Treme"
Either the creator was taking the piss at the 90's, or he lacked all self awareness. Or maybe both?
As someone who hasn't read much X-Men, all of this backstory seems excessively silly.
So, anyone else reading?
>>79113261
I am.
Sorry about that, I had to look up what exactly Adam X just did, because it sounds like nonsense.
I can't tell if this is just expository, or if Genis is supposed to sound kind of lame.
>>79113419
I know he can set blood on fire because that page where he tries that on the Juggernaut get posted a lot.
>>79113156
Whatever happenef to this villain? Only saw him in the X-Men cartoons but haven't read a comic with him until now.
>>79113510
The Fear Itself page?
>>79113525
I don't know, he seems kind of lame here. Maybe it's because I don't care about the Shi'Ar.
>>79113156
Didn't Brevoort make him? For some reason people mention the character to him a lot and he doesn't like it.
>>79113579
He didn't make Richard Rider, and yet people do that too.
>"Can we get back to me for a minute here?"
Genis says what I, for one, am thinking of at the moment.
Man, my download of this issue is kind of shit.
So one small cut, and Adam X can burn you alive? That's surprisingly broken.
>>79112993
I'm getting a wedgie just looking at those bikini bottoms.
Remember when I mentioned my version of this issue is shit? I don't have the last page.
>>79113923
That sucks, I don't have it either.
What do you say we just pretend we all saw that last page and move on. This issue, at least, seems to have everything in it.
For those of you new to Nicieza, his Genis-Vell loved his Sci-Fi 90's Slang.
Yet, I don't believe he said "flark".
>>79114110
You know what, I'm just gonna not bother deleting my posts and re-do them with the pictures.
HIS HEAD IS SPARKING AND FULL OF WIRES, OF COURSE HE'S A ROBOT!
>>79114157
No problem
... Man, that last page had a lot to it, didn't it? He went all the way back to Hala found out his friend was being attacked by a robot, and flew back to wherever this is. Nowadays that would take an entire storyarc.
Man, a lot of bad shit happens to Hala, huh? It's a wonder Galactus never stopped by for a snack.
>>79114323
Bump
>>79114358
Thank you
>>79114390
You welcome anon
I'm looking at one of my Captain Marvel Masterwork issues right now.Yes, I have all five, shut up.Marv did NOT have a ponytail.
>>79113905
You want to talk wedgies? Look at this horror.
Seriously, I can't get over that costume. That's literally the tiniest skirt I've ever seen, if it can be even called that.
It's just a few napkins stick to her stomach, it doesn't even reach the crotch.
Didn't Mar-Vell fight Thanos? I'm pretty sure Yon-Rogg ain't shit compared to the Mad Titan.
>>79114555
I think it needs to reach your hips at least to be a skirt. That's a weird belt, if anything.
"Dramatic music rises"
Oh sarcastic narration, I miss you.
>>79114701
That can't be a belt either, I know belts, believe me. I've played Kingdom Hearts. Belts need to be outside the clothes. That thing is inside the cloth of her... unitard, I guess?
>>79114700
Thanks Anon.
>>79114797
No pro
Spoilers: Genis-Vell never comes up with a good battle cry.
So I forget what happened between Galactic Storm and Annihilation, how did the Kree and the Shi'Ar separate again? Anyone know?
If it wasn't for the missing bucket head, I'd assume that Zey-Rogg was in the Nova Corp.
>"All I can say to alleviate your pain and anger is STOP WHINING!"
The beginnings of based Genis, Anons.
>>79114953
GOD DAMN IT
Is the commentary even worth it, Anons?
Given what happens to Genis later on, this is actually hilariously ironic.
Wait, when did he take the Nega-Bands back?
>>79115034
Sure
>>79115128
So I'm not 100% on Marvel cosmic. What aliens are pink? For a guy who called Genis a hybrid, the dude doesn't mind getting some alien ass, it seems.
And now is the first time Genis-Vell officially took the name "Captain Marvel".
And now what was missing from the last issue, the slang translator!
>>79115183
Good
>>79113657
Yeah but people bring Rich up because they want him back, Adam gets brought up to tease Brevoort or as a joke from what I've seen because no one really wants that charcter back.
Besides Brevoort doesn’t hate Rich (he just doesn’t see a use for him coming back especially with Sam being a Nova not to mention he is a jerk about things) especially since he pushed for Rich to have his own series. After Annihilation and before Conquest a GotG comic was planned but Brevoort and another editor felt that they hadn't formally set up a team yet so they pitched a Nova series with Rich.
>>79115290
Also, for some reason, I thought Yon-Rogg was a Blue Kree.
>>79115307
That makes sense, I suppose. Honestly, I only know about Brevoort from /co/, so I have the mental image of hundreds of nerds trolling him.
Either she really doesn't like plant feeding suggestions, or I'm missing a page.
>>79115447
Thanks for the bump.
>>79115483
No problema
Genis looks like he aged a few decades in that second to last panel.
By the way, I have yet to find a decent Cosmic Powers torrent, unfortunately.
For a character who is typically characterized as a lady's man, that's a really fucking stupid thing to say, Eros.
Did... did I miss an issue? When did Mar-Vell kill a god?
Ah, the mighty God-Slayer Captain Marvel... in a strip club watching porn.
Do you think this counts as Thanos giving a gift to Death?
>>79115779
Thanks for the bump.
>>79115823
this
Oh hey, speaking of Thanos. This was back while he was a Farmer after Infinity Gauntlet.
Why are there so many God-Killers in Marvel?
Seriously, this makes three of them I know of. At least this isn't a Thor villain.
Do the Celestials typically give a fuck about Gods?
>>79115981
Thanks Anon.
>>79116017
You welcome anon.
Did Genis butcher that line, or did I forget Bugs said that?
What the hell is a Buisness Front?
Heh. Mushroom head.
I don't know why I laughed at the mushroom head. Maybe I'm just tired.
Hey everyone, remember the dead children?
>>79116327
You know, these ones?
And like many other plot points, the Celestials being enemies of Genis? Never becomes relevant again.
>>79115970
I alos thought Celestial talked differently or was that a Hickman only thing?
Here we go, last issue of Genis-Vell's first series!
>>79116447
He isn't actually a Celestial, just one of their agents.
The dead rising in a cosmic story? I see no horrible things that could come from this, do you?
Genis makes a lot of TV references for a guy who's never been on Earth before issue 2.
>>79116684
A 90's hero needs to make quip and make TV references, regardless of how much sense it makes.
I'll never understand why Genis will sometimes ditch the jacket. He looks weird in mostly black.
>>79116684
I remember some KorN jokes, maybe in PAD.
>>79116772
Maybe I'm just weird, but would anyone else find it funny if a modern space hero did that, but with space pop culture references that the reader wouldn't get?
>>79116786
But by then, he was stuck with Rick Jones for a while that he could've picked them up.
That's a very Wolverine response to being offered the space equivalent of Communal Wine.
>>79115639
That's what the creepy powers are for.
>>79116908
I thought the creepy powers were for killing robot-human hybrids?
>>79115890
Must pay well.
>>79116963
Forget pay, benefits are the important stuff.
God damn, Elisyus. I'm surprised you didn't just fall out of that thing when you... fell down like that.
By the way, these two interludes? Since they're occurring in the last issue of his run? Completely pointless.
>>79116413
That butt-sticker on Genis really brings home the gravity of this moment.
Despite my joke about a planet of the living dead being creepy, what's the worst that could happen in this situation?
>>79117049
The worst part is that it's shown earlier, so someone remembered his butt sticker. Either way, I'm glad somebody else mentioned it, and not me.
>>79117007
Nipple tape?
She goes to Emma Frost's tailor. It's the only thing that makes sense.
>>79117120
Sorry, meant to quote you >>79117120 here.
People's skins keep turning dark randomly in this issue.
Ah, Mushroom Head is a shapeshifter.
I think I'll leave it at this issue for the night, and try something else in the afternoon.
>>79117299
Thanks for the bump.
Because I keep almost falling asleep.
Wow Mentor, that's kind of dickish.
Welp, that's an entire planet all dead now. Dark.
>>79117205
They're trying to convey darker lighting?
And that's the end of Nicieza's Captain Marvel run. Thoughts? Comments? Anyone?
>>79117385
Apparently that's good, because their lives weren't 'real' enough before.
>>79117312
this
>>79117412
Trying to meld the irreverent 90's hero with the philosophical cosmic wanderer is a very weird thing to read.
>>79117485
It tried so hard to re-capture that Starlin Mar-Vell feel, but missed the point since Genis is NOT that kind of character.
>>79117519
I think the scene where you can see the sticker on Genis' butt during a monologue of what a god is without worshipers kind of encapsulates this series.
bump-vell
>>79112899
God's work, OP. God's work. Really happy to see you delivered so soon.
Link to previous thread?
>>79115675
Referring to Thanos, presumably.
>>79117412
Remember to link back to this when you get to the ongoing issue that ties everything up.
>>79114668
Yon-Rogg's still his archenemy. Nigga killed his GF and is basically responsible for him becoming Captain Marveland Carol becoming Ms Marvel.
Strongest enemy =/= Archenemy, it's who personally fucks with you the most. Otherwise Spidey's would be Morlun, Thor's would be Mangog... and Superman's sure as SHIT wouldn't be Lex.
>>79115764
>Do you think this counts as Thanos giving a gift to Death?
>>79115970
Read Thor The Eternals Saga. Yes they fuckin' do.
>>79116786
I remember the specific joke you're referencing. It was hilarious, but not Genis.
>>79116938
Are you referencing something specific from comicdom or is that a Simpsons joke?
>>79117031
It gets cleared up in an issue of PAD's run. Patience.
bump ya salty dogs
I know some of you are probably expecting to go right to PAD's Captain Marvel, but this is an issue that should be read, if only because it sets up a joke in New Thunderbolts.
Also, who doesn't love a Monica Rambeau cameo?
This series was 90's as fuck, and was basically a series of one-shots. Other notable issues include Titania and Absorbing Man's wedding. But that doesn't involve Genis, so I don't care about it right now.
The pics from the last thread in desustorage are already saying 404. What the fuck gives? Am I doing something wrong?
>>79123943
Thanks dude
The scene Monica is referring to is >>78929271 from the last thread
>>79122729
This
>>79124038
Unfortunately, my job was a massive pain in the ass for a bit so I had to go a week between storytimes. Could that be it?
>>79124087
Thanks for the bump.
>>79124094
No as in, it's one of the very latest threads to go over the edge of the archive and into desustorage.
All the thumbnails are all still clearly there and there are threads from 2 weeks to several months back where the pics still open fine, but no dice here for some reason.
I'm reminded of that one scene from Whedon's Runaways.
>"We'll be okay, She-Hulk is right over there!"
>"That isn't She-Hulk."
>"But she's green!"
>"It's New York."
>>79124165
Crap. Well, on the bright side, most of those first three appearances don't matter in terms of PAD's run.
At least I don't think they did, save one issue.
Especially that third issue, which was a damned nightmare.
>Just keep it down, my mom is down the hall.
One more example of "Is Genis supposed to be 'cool 90's hero' or just a dork?"
I forget, is it in Monica's powerset to do a quick change of clothes like that, or did she just strip down to her nethers in a speed that would make a Chippendales dancer ashamed?
>My Masterlord
Well darn, even in her mind the Controller is controlling Monica.
Our hero, ladies and Gentlemen. Punching a woman in the face while screaming "You'e fist fodder!"
Whelp, nvm. Found a download.
What else were you planning to storytime other than the PAD run(s)?
God damn, Vision has been working out. His biceps are bigger than his friggen head!
>>79117519
What kind of character would you say he is, exactly?
From what I can gather he's a knot of insecurity and complexes.
>>79124372
Well after this, in the Genis-Vell timeline, is Avengers Forever, which I'm unsure on if I should do. Then there's PAD, and finally there's New Avengers, which I'm not storytiming because somebody else is currently doing Thunderbolts, and she'll get to that eventually.
Also, if you aren't, start keeping up with the JSA Storytimes. They usually get posted at around 8 PM Eastern Standard time.
>>79124411
He's vain, sarcastic, and kind of a dick. These are stories far better suited for the Silver Surfer Mar-Vell, or even Adam Warlock.
Of course, that may just be something in retrospect, maybe he could've BECOME a character to fit that view, but instead PAD made him a more humorous character.
And Vision is now Spawn. Or Batman. Or the Spectre.
The joke is that he's got a scary long cape.
I love how aliens can just immediately tell which human-looking race you are by looking at you, even when you're a hybrid. I say this as someone who can't tell a Britbong from a Swede until I hear a super recognizable accent.
>>79124438
Avengers Forever is a neat-ass story in its own right (I think, I skim-read), but might be a bit much for a Genis-exclusive storytime. Considering he's only one of like 8 characters and, even then, technically not even canon.
Do the last issue. That sets up the new status quo. Maybe cherry pick some pages that focus on Genis (like his internal monologue on the balcony) or scenes that follow what he specifically is doing (like the bit with Nixon). I once did a Miracleman "storytime" that was just the first 2 issues, the last 2 issues, and every page with Kid Miracleman in between, since somebody was interested in that specific character.
Man, was Eros always this creepy? No wonder Slott did that "Eros sued for rape" arc in She-Hulk, it kind of makes sense.
>>79124498
PAD's what I associate the character with and yeah, those 3 adjectives don't really resonate with those memories.
Well, at least for the first half.
>>79124605
I'll probably have to read through to find any Songbird interactions, since him and Songbird gets brought up a few times, despite it never actually occuring. Maybe I'll go from when Genis and the rest are summoned, and skip the pages when he's not around.
>>79124613
The Eros story later in that run was better imo.
>"You should LOVE death!"
>>79124640
There's three reasons I bothered to do his time before PAD.
1) Most people never read it.
2) There's a single issue that basically is a recap for issues that were never made. Like that Ed, Edd, n' Eddy issue that was a clip show for scenes that never happened before.
3) There's a scene where Genis is insane, and he makes two other versions of himself to talk to. The "Mad God" version of him at the time, the one that takes up most of his run, where he's bound to Rick Jones, and this one.
In that story, this version of Genis is basically set up to look like a drunken fool. Do you happen to remember that issue?
This scene was basically the only reason I wanted to storytime this issue.
>>79124760
yee
I'm looking forward to reading 2) with this new context.
Okay, so now comes Avengers Forever. The end DOES set up Genis's status quo for the PAD run, but mostly in this single page.
But, as >>79124605 said, it is a neat story in its own right, even if Busiek does swing his continuity boner around for, well, the entire 12 issues. Does anybody else have any opinions on if the whole thing should be storytimed, skip to PAD's run, or anything else?
>>79124955
Anyone? Thoughts? Suggestions? Don't care?
>>79124955
You know what, yeah. Skip to PAD.
>>79125173
It turns out there's a recap page at the end to explain all what we need to know, so yeah. PAD Genis-Vell, here we go!
How long do you think it took for the two of them to not get freaked out over somebody else being in the mirror?
Marlo's from PAD's Hulk run, yes? I need to start reading that.
In my defense, I only got into comics a few years ago, and there's other stuff I'm reading. Right now, I'm reading Sandman.
Given what's happened to him in the 15 years since this was released, the Robert Downy joke is actually hilarious.
Maybe I'll stop with the snark for now, and just post the pages.
As you can tell, PAD's run is much more of a comedy than Nicieza's
>>79125602
It does get darker during his Mad God days and beyond.
>>79125673
Even then, he's still enough of a catty bitch that it's somehow STILL funnier.
>>79114821
This here is what is called a "brick joke".
>>79124297
It was just a dress, those can come off pretty easy.
>>79125780
With the way it looks like she was poured into it, I'd guess it would've been tricky.
And here we get a few pages basically getting you up to date on Rick Jones and Genis.
>>79125338
That has to make shaving a pain in the ass.
Seriously, though, you should read Avengers Forever.
>>79125989
They bullshit their way through that problem.
Oh hey, a bust of Rom.
Remember when Marvel could use him without legal complications?
>>79126111
What's up with the artist (colorist?) and these two-headed people? This is the third time in two issues.
See, THIS Loony Toons reference I get.
>>79126160
Manifestation of the Destiny Force, lazy art, or a joke? YOU DECIDE!
If I had any booze I'd suggest a drinking game every time a character has new limb for a joke.
Keep Rick's joke in the top panel in mind. The last issue of the run, it sorta comes up.
He keeps making these fourth wall jokes!
I feel like at least half this part of the run is people (usually Rick) fucking with Genis, or Rick nudging against the fourth wall.
>>79126675
Oh god, I can't stop the snark.
And apparently, neither can Rick.
No, I don't know when Moondragon recovered from her coma. Maybe in a book I didn't read.
This is somehow stupider than most Hero vs. Hero arguments. Neither of them stops to go "Huh, maybe there's two people with the same name?"
What do you Anons think? Another issue?
>>79126111
I don't get how that copyright stuff works.
Like, I'm pretty sure Micronauts is the same situation but they keep showing up in Marvel comics regardless. I have no idea if they're gonna be in Ant-Man & Wasp or not. solely because of this muddiness.
>>79126675
There's a LOT of gr8 comic industry jokes in this run, due to Marlo's job.
>>79124013
>Titania and Absorbing Man's wedding. But that doesn't involve Genis, so I don't care about it right now.
I do, though. Would you storytime it anyway?
>>79124955
Storytiming Avengers Forever is ALWAYS good.
>>79126700
I just want Rick to troll the fuck of America Chavez
>>79130719
Good
OP were you gonna try and finish these before Thunderbolt's Storytimer gets to New Thunderbolts?
oomph
Oh my god. PAD Genis is hilarious.
I wonder, If we got Peter, Jubilee, Johnny & Rick Jones together, who would be the king(or Queen) of snark?
>>79138952
>Oh my god. PAD Genis is hilarious.
The ride hasn't even begun a'proper yet, boi
hold on to your sides
>>79134057
That's the plan. I'm having some trouble sleeping so I'll do a few more issues tonight, and then do a few more in the morning. With luck, this entire topic will get filled up.
So remember when I said what most of this run is over on this >>79126675 earlier post? I forgot, there's also a lot of gratuitous Marlo fanservice.
Nobody knows less than they think they know about the law that street crooks.
>>79148413
Bump
>>79148429
Thank you Anon.
You know you read too much Marvel when you know exactly what issue each of these comics is by cover alone.
>"My wife is in the Canadian woods."
>"Of course she's going to be attacked by a fucking monster."
So, is anyone here reading?
I can only assume Genis is referring to when he blasted the Hulk last page, because otherwise it means Genis appeared in PAD's Hulk.
That bottom right picture? Crop it and exploit it as you wish, lord knows it is begging for it.
Well shit, that's a sudden tone shift.
I think some of my favorite parts of this run are the silly expressions people make.
I really don't like Hulk's smile here...
god speed op
>>79148818
And here I was about to go to sleep after finishing this issue. Now that I know someone's reading, I guess I have to go one more.
And as abrupt as this is, this IS where the issue ends. I checked my paperback trade and everything.
Also, fuck these capchas.
For those of you not in the know, Wendigos are a curse that occur when you eat the flesh of another human in Canada. Yes, for some reason it only counts in Canada. I'm sure it was brought up somewhere, probably in Alpha Flight or an early Hulk comic, but I don't remember.
I chose to believe the sound effect is this because DC caught on after the first time.
>"Okay, you get the name Captain Marvel, but you DON'T get Shazam!"
And there goes Rocket's dinner.
Dat Genis-Butt.
