They start it as a haremshit, but then the MC gets with best girl by like 3rd episode, and they actually go through couple problems and work through them like normal humans.
Then it's generic magic battle school shit, but the MC isn't some ultra-level Kirito or middle-of-the-road-but-still-pulls-off-wins-when-the-plot-wants-him-to. He's literally got no powers. So he has to work to overcome itand his family shafting him politicallyin order to accomplish anything.
Plus it's got tons of waifus.

Unfortunately, that's the state of the industry right now, if you don't have a generic setting and moe the shit out of it/pander to the otaku/fujoshi, it's probably going to sell like shit (See Rokka no Yuusha) unless you have major fans behind it (see JoJo and Parasyte).
Some shows at least try to break away from that, even going as far as to intentionally bait people with false pretenses (see Gakkou Gurashi! and Black Bullet).
Rakudai at somehow managed to make up for its god-awful first two episodes that seemed to be going off a fucking checklist to hit every cliche.Seriously, the MC confesses to the main girl by episode 3 and then when they have relationship problems THEY FUCKING TALK ABOUT IT LIKE ADULTS.
Coupled with some awesome fight scenes and kickass animation, and it's an above-average show.
