I hope next season expands on the capacities of some of the human side characters/the other school kids, maybe even providing them with consistent development and screen-time; not to say I don't understand or appreciate that Star and Marco are meant to be the mains or anything, just that I would have liked more inclusion for Ferguson and Jackie and the one blond kid in their class whose name was said like once, etc. (good grief, I've can't recall half these character's names; has it been that long?) Maybe even that bully rich kid from Marco's dojo. I also wouldn't mind Marco's martial artist side being played up a tad, depending in how it was done (the training/competition side mostly).
I also wonder what Toffee's deal was. It's very obvious the writers wanted to keep that secret based on the breadcrumbs they chose to give us about him.

This one. Hope is a background character that has had like 2 lines in the series so far but hey, that's just enough material for these fuckers to work with. Even with such little material some here have made their own interpretation of this character to use in their greentexts and fanfics. When you're bored and on hiatus you gotta find ways to pass the time.
Most of us would like to see the side characters play a bigger role in the show since theyre so underutilized and have potential to grow. An interview with Nefcy a while back revealed that we will see a bit more of them in season 2, specifically Tom and Janna but hey, who knows what else we might get.

Yeah your sentiments align with the most common hopes I've seen in the thread for season 2. Star and Marco's friendship and ensuing hijinks are great, the rock the seires rests on. But for the series to progress it needs to develop background characters into secondary characters, and perhaps even some more primary ones.
Janna seems like the most likely candidate in that regard, considering the shows creator talked about her popularity in season 1 and how they're going to include her more. In addition to that, Tom will be making his return, so there's a lot of potential in that regard. I'm a sucker for the reformed bad guy turning into a friend, there's fun areas to explore such as him becoming surprising buddies with Marco, much to Star's disbelief/dislike. Another point of contention between the main two would be interesting.
I'd also love to see more on the development front in terms of the magic and martial arts, good theme for episodes and helps outline progression of the characters in a clear way.
I think the villain front will be a strong point, given that Toffee and Miss Heinous are still about as major threats, and as minor -run of the mill- monsters go we can see some unique characters hopefully, like the ones in the intro.

I didn't know that. That's something, since I really didn't think much of anyone else aside from me would have liked/would hope for more interaction between Star and Marco and other characters aside from each other (especially since they seem to feel that Star and Marco should be a pairing, even though Star actively encourages Marco to be more forthcoming with Jackie).
The only "issue" I have with Janna getting more focus is that this would likely lead her to indulge in a more "evil" side, and as silly as this may sound, I don't know if I "feel like it", if that makes any sense. On the other hand, Tom getting focus could lead to nice things all around, depending on what they do.

Same here. That's kind of what I was getting at earlier, actually. Thinking on it, I wouldn't mind a sort of martial arts (or whatever) rival for Marco who treats him as a worth opponent and vice-versa (and if they could sneak some development for the little blond twerp, that'd just be gravy).
The way the last season ended makes me feel the Villain side of things will be fine, too. On top of that, there's also a mythology that seems to have opened up, going from the events of said finale.
Having said all that, I can just as equally and honestly say that I'm extremely likely to be happy with whatever we do end up getting. It's just that I'll be even more happy to also see some of the above-mentioned.

I think it's the natural progression of the show from where it left of. The setups done, and the main relationship in the show is firmly planted and expanded upon already. Really for more development to happen there has to be more options for dialogues and issues that havent been brought between Star and Marco. To do that you need other character involvement, it's why I'm surprised they didn't try to highlight Brittney as the main antagonist to Star on earth. You could argue they've done that for Marco in part with Jeremy, though we'll have to see if they actually pursue that all.
Either way, more characters means more dynamic stories. SU just spent a large number of episodes introducing what was once an antagonist as a new member of the main cast. Things like that need time and focus, but can not only keep with the main style of the show, but make it better/offer other tangents for growth.
Getting back to the Star side of things I think the biggest bonus would be additional members for magical trips. It adds a contrast from the norm, which is Star and Marco doing their thing, without interrupting that balance.
I certainly hope they don't go that route with Janna, as I've said in the past it'd be great in the series had an odd ball human girl to compare to Star. Janna could fit that bill perfectly with her penchant for interests seemingly out of the norm. That and adding in someone Marco doesn't know how to deal with in a non-spaghetti filled manner.
I'm not too sure what they can do on that karate rival front, Jeremy doesn't seem to be an actual contender for Marco with what we've seen outside of Monster Arm, especially considering he was cheating during it. Perhaps that's where Tom will come in?

That was neat, wasn't it? I can say that starting off, I would have never assumed this would be the fate of that show's "Starter Villain", but I am pleasantly surprised that it was. One thing with Steven Universe that I love is its appreciation to its side/secondary characters (even if they haven't shown up much recently and there are a couple I would like to see more of in general [more Peedee, a tad bit less Ronaldo]). The show is not afraid to develop them and ends up the better in the long run for doing so.

I agree witht his 100%. That's what made Ferguson and Alphonso's trip to fairy land so exciting; it wasn't just Star and Marco. Similar thing happened with the school field trip episode where we finally learned some of these characters' names.
Regarding Janna, your idea is the best, but we'll need to see for her, too.
One thing they could do would be to have Marco become a kind of mini-mentor to Jeremy, but that would require Jeremy to develop. As mentioned, I see both as being rather similar in some respects, but also different.The Tom idea could work, yes.

I think they will, Ludo is seemingly out of the picture, as is Buff Frog who were the two most developed characters outside of Star and Marco amusingly enough. With main villains already setup, all that's left is to work on the human relations on earth. Which will be easy given they've setup the base for the potential characters to use, e.g. Brittany and Janna.

That's what I liked the most about the use of his character. Marco's development will come through getting him out of his comfort shell, as is the case both in media and in real life with shy characters. Star does it from the more positive front, encouraging measured risk taking and confronting fear with seeking wonderment.
Jeremy on the other hand gets Marco out of that shell in the more negative manner, inciting the more aggressive and forward nature that could do him well in the previously mentioned wonderment seeking. However, naturally it also highlights the potential character flaws of Marco, in a bit of a temper and rigidity in dealing with people out of the norm. I think character flaws are a huge positive feature of this show, as it makes them easy to relate to.
On the SU front, I'm a bit biased as Peridot was an instant favourite given her stand out design, into her amusing antics and eventual redemption. But I'd certainly agree that it was handled rather well, the only complaint I have with it is how many episodes focused on her over the duration of the redemption. Whilst screen time is necessary it could be argued that with the bomb format she was the focus of a large number of episodes all at once. Still, they developed her solidly, giving her time with all the main characters so Star vs. will hopefully do something similar with side characters and Star+Marco.

Anyways, PixtopiaI think that was the episode name?is one of those real underated episodes, that and Quest Buy as it does the simple adventure format just right given the tone of the show. If we can get more instances of that or IDFT we're laughing as in IDFT Miss Skullnick went from simple trope teacher to a developed character that you like, which is impressive in my eyes.
I think there's a lot they could do with Janna, that's the thing I'm most looking forward to at least.

Looking at it that way Star and Jeremy could also function as foils to each other with how they interact with Marco. Now, whether they'd do more with Jeremy beyond that like they'll obviously do with Star is another question.
Regarding Peridot, I guess you argue they spent a lot of time, which becomes super noticeable if you aren't partial to her character, but I'd still say that the show doing so was to its and her benefit. The "Bomb" marathon format just means you don't necessarily have to do this week after week (it just means cap hiatuses, instead :p).
But yeah. Here's hoping this show will follow suit in that general regard.

Very true. Since Tom's only been in a single episode, that didn't quite end in his favorable light, in order for him to get into a respectable position with Marco, we'd need him to get into an unambiguously respectable position in general. That, in turn, requires more development for him in general, which obviously requires more appearances.

No worries about anything like that, I welcome the discussion with someone relatively new to the show. It's been so long since season 1 ended that really most things have been discussed, but to what depth is questionable.
I think the big question with both Tom and Jeremy making more appearances is how much are people willing to put with with characters that are rather antagonistic. Given the shows fell-good vibe, having characters like that can turn people off pretty quickly. This can be seen with Princess Ponyhead early on in the series, some people just flat out couldn't stand her.Yeah I had that feeling during the bomb that just finished that, damn if I didn't like Peridot I'd be pretty damn pissed given the hiatus reemerging. Still, the next lot of episodes look really good given the what the spoilers have shown will have to happen.
What would your reason for it being under appreciated be then? Outside of the obvious waifu-bait of the pixie queen. I agree with the other two being real gems, but Party Bus always sat poorly with me. Marco really got the short end of the stick there, doubly with the whole motion sickness thing. Could have been a strong introduction episode for Star and the human characters, but they were relegated to the background throughout. At least it's given Brittney further reason to dislike Star.
On the Tom front, add in the fact that he wouldn't really work as a Ludo-esque weekly threat and have previously more established serious villains; I can't see him playing an antagonist role. If anything he'll likely pop up 2-3 times during the season as plot point or perhaps adventure partner. I can't see him having much interest in earth, so my head is saying he'll have that previously described role.
That all being said, he does have two very relate able problems, so there's a lot to work with in terms of a mini-redemption. Will be interesting to see how the two of them react to him after an episode or two.

I think it's strong enough as a stand alone, like this is a consequence of the events from STC. (Unless it's meant to take place before it?) But I can also kinda see it escalating into something larger, like the dreams are prophetic or something.

Ludo's this weird mix of incompetent idiot and semi-competent neerdowell all at the same time. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw him again, but in what form will be interesting as he could be both friend or foe at this point.

Mewni should be completely destroyed, every Mewman murdered and Star's parents killed in front of her. Then, overlord from Starcraft should try to rape Star and fail but not before taking off her clothes and immobilizing her, making her think she's gonna go through long and painful death. She should eventually be resecued but also develop many psychological complexes, one of them being extremely avoiding of other peopels' touch, especially Marco's. I imagine her dropping on her knees, curling up and crying out loud every time he tries to hug her for comfort, as this would remind her of the overlord tentacles wrapping around her chest, waist and limbs.

True. I definitely got this vibe with Princess Ponyhead when the writer's wisely avoided using her too much, to the degree where she only appeared twice in the first season (granted, hers was the second episode, and she also got a 30 minute "special" to her name, too). Really, like Ponyhead, it depends on whether they intend to develop them for the better in the long run, because if so, then it would be worth it, in my opinion.

Perhaps not under-appreciated per se, but it goes into the "including non-Marco/Star characters in Marco and Stars shenanigans" thing that I didn't really believe most would be/were interested in. The impersion that I got, and rather still get for the most part, is that Star and Marco and only them together are all that is taken away from the show/appreciated. So, it ended up feeling like the episode shaking the formula up wasn't really acknowledged.The somewhat "snap-back"ie feel about Alphonso showing up like nothing happened a few episodes later, slightly implying that the show doesn't really appreciate it either may also not be helping for me, even though it I am aware that it was intended as a sight gag.
Not only did I enjoy Party Bus for what it was, I appreciated the cursory glance at some of the other kids, even if it was just cursory. ::continued below::

We learn that that kid, whose name that I don't recall was first mentioned during the field trip episode, is actually an extroverted, happy and excitable guy if and when pressed (before that, he seemed to be rather unresponsive as a whole).

I agree on the Ponyhead thing, though I didn't actually mind her too much in the St. O's episode. It was just having her and Star early on was a double dose of brattyness that didn't leave a good taste. Given that Star had progressed much from then into St. O's it made her character seem much more acceptable. If they've looked at the positive feedback for characters like Janna and Tom, no doubt they've seen the negative side with Ponyhead and Jeremy. No great loss at least.Yeah, with the bomb format they have to go on extended hiatuses as a result of using the stores of completed episodes up. Though they do apparently have most of the announced ones done already, it's just a scheduling thing so they can make the most out of SU in the bomb format, then air TTG as much as possible as it's the most popular channel filler.
The spoiler in mentionnamely a picture and add on CN of Peridot giving a gift to Lapis at the barnwhich understandably was a fuck up as it reveals a big part of the upcoming episodes.
Oh I see, yea a lot of anons during the talk back threads were slightly annoyed at there being no continuity there. But given the shows nature your bound to get some easy gags like that. I suppose what you said about Star and Marco's hijinks being the focus is true, certainly that's what I told people to focus on to see if they'd like the show. But with season 1 acting as a solid setup for that relationship, I think people will be more open to a wider cast of characters now. Alf and Ferg's biggest issue is really that they aren't cute girls, if it'd have been Janna and Jackie people would have loved the episode.

That was the first idea that come to mind, but I can't see what Tom would gain from earth, I suppose it all depends on his intentions when he comes back. Hopefully he's over Star, though a lovesick demon puppy could be fun. We'll have to see which suits the show better, I'm sure the fan art will come rolling in regardless.

Not that anon, but that bit didn't even bother me because Star had the scissors right there; that's even how they escaped. It's pretty easy to assume they just went back and got him immediately after the end of the episode, especially since I think in St. O's there's a comment about how using the scissors to get to a specific place is "usually pretty accurate." It just didn't seem like something even worth showing to me.
But what different viewers see as "continuity" varies a lot for this show. I think the continuity has been pretty good because so far there are only 2 or 3 episodes that are entirely self-contained (in that they add nothing new to the show or continue anything, and nothing from them is shown again), but others see it as weak just because it doesn't constantly go HEY REMEMBER WHEN.

Yea perhaps it was more of a vocal minority type thing. It never struck me too hard, but some people can get a bit touchy about that stuff. It's not as applicable to Star vs. in comparison to Gravity Falls lets say, as continuity is rather important to a show centered around a mystery. Even then, it was usually only little things like Dipper's scar not being shown in a flash back that people raved about. It's easy to focus on what didn't match up than all the things that did.
Getting back to Star, one of the big things that solidified my positive feelings for the show was Miss Skullnick stayed a troll and even got some background and character development in IDFT. I was expecting the next time we saw her to just be a human again, but they stuck with it and made her an interesting character on top of it.

Oh yea the lazer puppies too. Scary thought that Star can just bring things to life at the drop of a hat like that. Really the show has done a great job continuity wise, especially with character development. That's a huge boon for season 2 for me, more episodes to explore how much Marco and Star have developed and how they can continue to develop.
The best test in the regard will be how Marco acts around Jackie, considering he sat next to her at the end of IDFT and seemed more chilled out in the Bad Hair Day episode.

I was a big fan of both the Ludo and Gossiping story when they were first posted. So it's good to see them in an archived space.
The au madness story rounded itself quite well with how plot points and characters were introduced and resolved. I loved all of the Marco's, Original Marco was perfect for the role of the kind big brother whose patience is constantly tested. It actually felt pretty sweet and heartwarming that all of the 'younger' Marco's treated him as such: asking for money, permission or favors. Half of them could probably kick and/or murder his ass, ie; they could easily bully him to get their way, yet they don't.(Their own latent kindness? they're all Marcos too)
"Mark" was such an entertaining asshole, which left him believably open to being unpopular with his 'family'. The way his sister got revenge for a past event was a nice subtle hint to his 'misunderstood' side. I was genuinely feeling a little tense on who was gonna deck him for his BS.(Doubly funny when his comeuppance finally came in the form of a sibling he never teased and/or bothered.) It's kind of odd/amusing that my favorite depictions of BB Marco in written form have all been from /sveg/.
Sol was perfect in his rigidity and deep devotion to his Lady/Star.(Him praising Lady's purity, and greatness while she was being anything but was one of many comedic highlights.)You did great in depicting how I imagined he would interact with his 'siblings'. Being especially at odds with the renegade BBM, but abrasive in his own stern way.
Monco and Marcia had brief roles but were still distinctive. Marcia was interesting in that she seemed a lot more outgoing and assertive than regular Marco, without the delinquency of her 'blue brother'. While Monco kind of reminded me of Animal from the muppets with his feral behavior.(I loved how he came back in the ending)
Blarco was great too with his deadpan lines.
