You have to preserve the current timeline for the future to happen correctly. That means people must die, cities must burn, civilizations must fall.
I'm reminded of a short story I read once, about a society of time travellers. The first thing everyone who discovers time travel tries to do is kill Hitler.
Every time, every single time, it makes history *worse*. As such, older (relative) time travelers have started foiling the attempts of younger time travellers to prevent any Hitler-related deviations in history.
But then, one day, a Chinese man discovers Time travel, and the whole "Hitler" issue, and he calls bullshit on the whole affair. He points out a warlord from Chinese history who killed ten times as many people as Hitler did, and proposes saving hundreds of millions of lives by eliminating that guy instead.
The older (relative) time travelers agree to give him a chance, and stand back.
The guy travels back in time and smothers the future warlord in his cradle.
And, from outside of time, the other time travellers watch as China keeps a state of peace and prosperity without this horrific warlord conquering things, and, in the end, China becomes a much stronger and overall better place as a result of it. On the whole, the world improves.
Except the Chinese guy is missing.
It turns out, he was a descendant of the Warlord, dozens of generations removed. And in killing his own ancestor, he undid his own existence.
But China generally was a better place, so they decided to let it slide, and go back to keeping Hitler from being killed.

I prefer to think of time as something that cannot be changed, and instead, alternate realities are created while your own time line remains in tact. I refuse to believe time is so badly designed it would allow paradoxes, you know, like when someone goes back in time to stop something bad from happening but by doing so you remove the reason you went back in time, logically you wouldn't be able to do it, so I prefer to think alternate realities negate this logical paradox issue.
It's all ready ridiculous that we're travelling through time, so no one can even say alternate reality theories don't make sense or are unrealistic. If anything, divergent time lines make more sense than the traditional concept of time travel related cause and effect.
