In Legends, I recommend starting the New Jedi Order series. While some installments in the series are bad, I'd say the series averages out to be pretty good, at least over the books I've read so far (I just finished Star By Star).
In particular, watch out for Balance Point, because it's painfully dull but unfortunately necessary. Edge of Victory Part II had an enragingly stupid Mara Jade plotline, though it made up for it with the Yuuzhan Vong shaper plotline.

okay so i have a theory about episode 8 and it ties in rebels.
so i think luke met up with Ezra at some point when he was training new jedi and ezra is the one who knows about the old jedi temples and tells him.
so luke is finding all these old temples and even discovers that degobah where yoda was living was an old Jedi temple and that's why he experienced the vision there much like ezra did in the other jedi temple.
now as Luke keeps finding these temples he is sending his padawans in to pass the test like ezra had to but he doesnt know that there are some old sith temples and he sends Kylo into one. this is a sith temple with the dormant general snoke and he planted a seed in kylo and slowly turned him and then told kylo how to bring him back
now after rey meets up with luke i feel like hes gonna be like i cant train anyone ever again cuz hes to butthurt you and hes gonna send her to find ezra and learn from him

Very. It's basically Band of Brothers mixed with Starship Troopers set in Star Wars. Gritty, grounded war story taking place between ANH and RotJ. The main character, Hazram Namir, is complex and interesting and there's a nice ensemble cast of other Rebel soldiers that serve with him. I really liked the tone and feel of it, the action is good and it's well written.

Leia got claps and cheers in my theater along with all the others. Anakin Skywalker is the noble protagonist(which he is most of the time, he's trying to do what's right for those he cares for). Therein lies his flaw, his inability to let go of attachment. He's taken from his only family, his mother, at a young age and becomes the member of the Jedi Order, where he is told to forget his attachments and control his emotions and is taught by Obi-Wan, who strictly follows the ways of the Jedi and allows little room for Anakin to adjust to this new lifestyle at a reasonable pace.
In AotC, things get even more stressful when he reunites with his childhood crush and begins harboring feelings for her again. They eventually form a relationship and he also loses his mother. He loses an arm to Dooku, then the Clone Wars break out, putting even more stress on him as he is promoted to Knight and is put in charge of a legion of clonetroopers and sent off to fight in a war.
Things come to a point when Padme reveals she's pregnant and he begins having troubling visions of her dying in childbirth. He seeks help from Yoda, who doesn't really tell him what he needed to hear, instead opting to tell him to basically not be attached.
He then seeks out Palpatine, who begins to tell him the wonders of the Dark Side and how it can save her. Anakin is eventually seduced to the Dark Side and in a fateful decision sides against the Jedi. The Dark Side now taking hold, Anakin blindly wipes out the Jedi Order. He duels his former master and "dies" on Mustafar, and is replaced with Vader.
Whether or not you like the execution of the prequels, it's all there. This doesn't even factor in the stress of teaching a padawan in TCW only to have her not rejoin the order.
