BP and Thor have rifts which will help and if you pull a Universal selector from the daily chest you can use it on BB. But you can use it as a goal to keep you playing. If you're patient, things will pay off. There's also flash sales, which you should only pick up if they're x80 or x100, for best bang for your crystals.
And yeah it's pretty easy to get into the BW brackets that net you 16-20 bios, A-Force characters are impossible to farm any other way

I don't think so man. She's pretty damned damaging as her output comes mostly from the pseed of her chained gun combos. Add to that her moves dodge out of attacks, if you gave her a doidge 5th gear and put alll her 4th on penetration, she'd be fucking ridiculous.

Black cat is ok, there's a black cat /co/mrade around that can probably help you there more, she's still one of the rarest characters though so keep that in mind.
Elsa is great, it can break/juggle enemies for days, her damage is somewhat mediocre compared to the heavy hitters, but nowhere as bad as ant-man or sharon carter. You gotta play her manually however; learn some combos, try some cooldown/attack/dodge sets, see what rolls for you, but yeah, she's great.

Did you ever play Ultimate Alliance? It's basically a lite version of that. It's a good time sink but you might not fill up your whole hour the first few days because you'll be low leveled and have a limited amount of energy you can use to play missions.

Use it on your favorite, no matter how rare or common it is, there's selectors, offers, events, a lot of stuff to help us rank up heroes. And buy stark stash.
Malakith is on the rare side of things, there's currently no way to farm him in the game, that said it's a great blast character so if you want to use him, go ahead, being rare only means it will take you longer to rank up than others characters, nothing more.

When you start, you'll be given a 3* selector, all told I think you get 3 3* selectors after one week of playing but I can't remember exactly.
Also after your first time dieing, you'll be able to choose a free level 30 3* from a select list so get on that sooner rather than later so you'll have a character to help you through early missions you might have trouble with.
Anyways, of those 3*s you get to pick, you basically need to ask yourself if you want characters that are easy to farm (thus you'll get a headstart on them and can get them to max rank faster, like Ultron, Vision or Spider-man) or rare characters/hard to farm (so you'll be able to get characters that would be otherwise extremely difficult to get without the selectors but will be extremely difficult or even impossible to rank up without spending some cash or insane amounts of grinding like Black Cat, Star-Lord, or Angela)
Also don't pick Giant-man, because while he's one of the best combat characters, he's also the easiest character to farm in the game so picking him would be a waste of the selector.
The pastebin in the OP should have links to rundowns of which characters are easy to farm or rare, and some recommended characters. Generally the characters that are easy to farm are those with 3 different story missions and/or a special mission.
I'd say the easiest characters to farm are MODOK, Ultron, and Giant-man. If you want a team that'll carry you through to endgame, Ultron, Giant-man, and Vision is a pretty good go to. You can try them all out in the Skill Preview which is basically a training mode.

Look at it this way, 550 crystals cost $10. With the Stark Stash, you're getting 2450 for $4. It's far and above the best deal, the only downside being that it's strung out over 30 days. It's basically a subscription. I'd say it's worth it to get it at least once, and if you don't like the game after one month or think that you don't need anymore crystals then you can just not get it again.
At the very least, it's nice to get an early game bump in your crystals until you're at a point where you can consistently get crystals from daily trophies and weekly timeline battles.

Not necessarily. I picked Angela as one of my 3* selectors despite her being literally the rarest character in the game, and I love her. Really fun, great synergy for my main team (Elsa/Blade/Angela), pretty powerful. She's just really difficult to rank up.
And basically just pick whatever characters you like most.
Another thing to keep in mind is team synergy. If you go into the teams tab, there's a little "team up" icon on the right side (three grey figures) that shows which characters get bonuses by being on teams with others. This could help you in deciding which characters to pick, but they're not necessary. They just give some stat boosts.
Vision, War Machine, and Black Panther are all good characters though. Vision and War Machine both have early game story missions which makes them pretty easy to start farming for a new character. BP less so, but dropping 100 bios on him will get you a pretty big head start and he's a pretty fun character.
The one thing about Vision/WM/BP is that you've got two blasters and one combat. For a main team you generally want either Combat/Blaster/Speed for a good spread or Universals for the others. Luckily Vision has a really good uni that turns him from blaster type to universal stype, so that'd actually work well for that team. Also Vision and WM have a team-up bonus.
Though frankly, like the other anon said before, don't worry too much about these early game selections and just go for the characters you think are cool. You'll get other characters as you play anyways.

I think he's pretty underrated though his dps in team up isnt great, low warm up time for skills, basically an 2 sec i frame with brutal whisper, decent aoe stun, big damage on electron channeling, and his dash is great for getting out of trouble.

I could see them doing an inhumans update, adding in Medusa, Karnak, and Crystal. Really it just depends on how long the game lasts.

The only real restriction is the daily allowance of special missions, which is mitigated a bit by the unlimited entry system; you can get over an hour of farming a particular special mission a day.
All I can think of to add is that your chance for bios improves with the difficulty, so you might want to run as hard as you're comfortable with; I mean, if you can just barely pull off the 4th bracket, your time would be better invested in clearing the 3rd tier more quickly.
This game got me into Marvel comics, really, but I haven't actually read any of them yet.
Has anybody got recommendations for interesting stuff I can start on? I don't care too much for the ordinary versions of the characters, and would prefer things like 2099 and interesting AUs.

Earth-X and Marvels/Marvels: Eye of the Camera are two must-reads. The former is kind of Marvel's Kingdom Come, an alt-future that was meant at the time to kinda be the "canon end to the Marvel universe" and the latter is a look at the Golden/Silver/Bronze Ages from the eyes of a photojournalist.
As for other good Marvel alt-universe stuff, Spider-man 2099 and Doom 2099 were the best things out of the 2099 line. Ultimates 1 & 2 and Ultimate Spider-man are pretty great. Exiles is a good go to for alt-universe nonsense. And the Secret Wars tie-ins are basically an entire line of alt-universe stories, so I'd recommend checking some of them out. Pic related for the full list. Weirdworld, Infinity Gauntlet, Civil War, and Master of Kung-fu were my favorites.
Also Gruenwald's Squadron Supreme is one of the all-time best Marvel comics, but none of the Squadron are in the game. Hopefully they at least add Hyperion and Nighthawk for the Nighthawk v Hyperion: Supreme Dawn update. It's basically "what if the Justice League devoted themselves to solving all of the world's problems."

If you're going for trades, I'd recommend instocktrades.com. Most LCSs sell at MSRP, while IST is always 42% off minimum. For floppies, digital and your LCS sell at the same price so it's usually worth picking up at your LCS if only for supporting small businesses and physical copies are nice.
Marvel also has a netflix like service called Marvel Unlimited but I've never tried it so I don't know how the selection is. It's only like $10 a month though so might as well check it out.

Spider-gwen is a poorly written comic, yes.
It's not that it's a "/co/" thing, it's just that the creative team behind it are just mediocre, bad.
Want to read a good comic book?, read "Silver Surfer : Requiem", or hell, just read Tom King's "The Vision", it just started and it's a great example to get into good books.
Now that said, you can like whatever you want as long as you don't deny yourself the joy of reading better books.
