The original dude doesn't even sound angry about the fanart, he's just disgruntled at the way they were being presented. Klaspy-Cusco had a certain aesthetic with certain ideas and influences within it, and those pieces of fan art were likely being presented to him ignorant of that.
He doesn't insult the artwork of the other artists, he wanted to express what he conceived of as a set of drawings in-line with the show's aesthetic.

Instead of yelling at a dude for acting grumpy, she could have just said that what she made came from its own set of influences and didn't necessarily pull from the original source material. I don't know about you but anyone who grabs a few pieces of fanart to call out as "doing it wrong" while claiming that they have something at stake here because they did some storyboard work on the shows doesn't sound like too chill of a guy.

As an artist, you pour your heart out to these characters, spending years of your life working with them, and imagining them to the point that they essentially engulf your entire mind and you can't think of anything else.
Then some guy comes in, sees your stuff,
"Oh, that's wrong." He says.
This can go two ways.
90% of the time, it takes only the most superficial aspects of your work and makes stupid shit like non-sensical shipping, more "modern" takes regardless of whether the character was modern and hip in the first place. It becomes embarrassing.
Just look at pic related, for example.
And now I want you to put yourself in the creator's feet. Now I want you to imagine a few hipsters saying something like "Oh, this is much more in line with the spirit of the character. The author doesn't know shit how his own stuff works."
Needless to say, it can be infuriating in the worst cases.
But it's worth it, in the end, when you notice the last 10% who actually took care to analyze the spirit of the work and actually build up on them.

So, I tried to come up with "Where are they now" stories based on the OP images.
Tommy inherited the mechanical ingenuity that both his father and grandfather possess. However, running a small fix-it shop proved to be financially unfeasible, and he lacked the vision to be a toy designer/inventor like his father. Instead, he's the HVAC guy that repairs refrigeration units in supermarkets when they break down.
Chuckie works a boring, menial, 45K per year + dental plan (Chuckie needs braces) office job, like his father did. He didn't have the charisma or guts to aim any higher.
Phil is a Youtube Let's Player, who occasionally posts videos of him eating disgusting things, and Lil is a blogger. Maybe they work part-time jobs as well. Phil dropped out of college, Lil got a degree in something useless and liberal arts related. Both still live with their parents.
Dil was dropped on his head at a young age (see the "All Growed Up" special), and as a result was never really all "there". There was nothing wrong with the article, that's how constructive critique in art is supposed to work: point out the flaws in the design and demonstrate the correct way to do it. People who draw fan art s adult don't know anything about anatomy, fashion, or perspective, or even basic construction, they just copy what they see and draw what they think is cool. Many professional artists and strict art teachers in real life don't like fan art because it stagnates the artist's ability and style.

he storyboard artist wasn't attacking the fan-artists at all, but I think he'd have come off as less inflammatory if he drew them in the "ugly" Klasy Csupo style, but more obviously in their 20's. Which was the point of the hipstery fan-art, but that obviously missed the mark as far as characterization goes. But the storyboarder's interpretation seems to put everyone in this weird nebulous zone where you can't tell what age they are and the art looks rushed. I think what happened is that some people got pissed because the storyboardist came off as, "I didn't put any effort or a lot of thought into this, but anything I shit out is better than your creative interpretations."
Alternately, people can suck it up and stop being whiny shits about literally nothing, but this is the Internet we're talking about.

It all depends on the subtly of the intent and how it betrays the spirit of the character. Iron Man as a medieval Knight and scifi Sherlock holmes are still in line with the original intent. Fan art of Iron Man as a terrorist or Holmes as a criminal masterline still shows understanding because you're depicting and contrasting the characters in a way opposite to how they were made.
But like you INTEND to make a character a superhero but just make them a facist jerk or the art comes off as unheroic and pricky as possible. Well that's just shit. I can forgive porn and yaoi art for example, the fetish is clear and overt in that. It's harder to look past ugly trend chasing hipster art because the agenda and message is far subtler. We have real life gentrification and hipsterfying of cities right now on the US east coast, why do we have to have incompetent artist colonizing on our beloved childhood characters and cartoons?
The ideology behind it isn't just manifested in fanart like this.
It's also in all the trend of terrible "Adult" reboots of everything we loved as kids. Why would any self-respecting Peanuts fan watch a live-action movie about all the characters as hipsters like Entourage, while removing all the personalities, setting and everything people who originally liked about the show? There's a reason people hated All Grown Up you know.
You can say "Well it's just fanart! It doesn't effect anything!" but it's offensive just because it displays the sensibilities of the artist. People are most offended by ideology these days than anything.
