That page is just too good, love it. Seeing Clark as he grows up in Kansas is the best.

Kinda disappointed really. The artwork is just terrible. Everyone is drawn realistically but has huge anime eyes like those how to draw anime books.
The story itself isn't great. The dialogue is terrible and feels unnatural. The pacing is terrible and drags on.
The "cute" moments of young Clark feel artificial, like Max is just trying to manipulate the readers heartstrings and pretend to be emotional. The whole concept it self has been done by many (and better) writers and the issue doesn't really add anything new.

Christ, did we really need another retelling of Superman's origin?

Max Landis is consistently the least fashionable man on the planet.
>>
I really wish Landis could get the characters' voices right. Like they all sort of sound like Max Landis. It's better than that Joker story he did, I guess, but that might just be because it isn't particularly dialogue heavy.

Otherwise I don't think it was bad. Nothing mind blowing, or anything, but it was cute and it worked.

That would actually be sort of a fun superhero. I've always wanted to see a superhero universe that's dripping with sexuality and innuendo, but never to the point where its vulgar or explicit, and that could be a fun idea to play with there.

The New 52 as a branding was dropped after Convergence.

The main universe still applies, but now they don't care about continuity. Writers can tell any story they want and not have to worry about maintaining coherency.

That's not true. Ennis was forced to use the New 52 versions of the superheroes in All Star Section Eight.

He's young, pham. Probably mid to late 30s. He would have been while raising Clark. He gets older as Clark approaches adulthood.

Pleasantly surprised by the issue. Not edgy at all and had a good Superman feel to it. Great father son moments, and a neat way to explain an idea into Clark on why he should always hold back in a world of cardboard. I like how he thought of everyone he hurt when he destroyed something.

I just hope the teenage years don't go full angst because this was a good superman comic.

Screenwriter who's kind of broken into comics. Wrote Chronicle. Son of John "I Directed Blues Brothers And Also Accidentally Killed Two Kids And Vic Morrow" Landis. His personality is a bit over-the-top but he's a pretty decent writer.

There was nothing "hip" about the dialogue. Where did it sound "hip"? Everyone's voice was pretty age appropriate and down-to-Earth. Clark sounded like a kid, albeit one who's rather smart for his age.
>>
Based on this, Max Landis should have written Man of Steel

Son of John Landis
Made short films "The Death and Return of Superman" and "Wrestling Isn't Wrestling".
Wrote "Chronicle" "American Ultra" and "Victor Frankenstein" (out in 2 weeks)
Was contacted after RC to do weekly "Death and Return of Superman" with Greg Pak, which was later retooled to make "Doomed". Afterwards, DC asked if he wanted to do a mini.

Whaat. They owe money to whoever the writers were. It feels ethically suspect.

Hi Max

The art is alright, webcomic tier, but the women are hot and the writing is solid

I know the Candle Cove story was by a guy who published it on his website. But I could claim I wrote smiledog and nobody can stop me.

Hey Max!

>>77384208 I like this song Mr. Landis so at least thanks for that.

Your comic was mediocre at best though. Good direction, awkward dialogue but at least nothing was overly wordy. Art was hit or miss. I look forward to not paying for issue 2.

I'd be with you if we hadn't had any number of other writers write better Jon and Clark moments all over the place. Even some of the Action Comics back ups during the Morrison run, which were just a few pages, cover this territory better. Pak, before PakAction was even a gleam in anyone's eyes, also did this better in his introduction piece, which he tied in well into a story months after the fact. Plus, of course, Busiek, Waid, and The Cereal King all did this better.
>>
>>77384276
>the faces
are the issues saving grace. Jonathan is too dark haired, which makes sense given Clark's blue black throughout-history locks ('cepting there's no biological connection, Max!)
>>
>>77398046
Just because you can name examples you consider better, doesn't disqualify this instance from being enjoyable.
>>
>>77384400
Hey - if you could actually fly, you would too. One of the worse things DC ever did was give everyone and his side kick the ability to fly or jump - not that it should be limited to CK, but it shouldn't be something everyone can do.
>>
>>77398130
The writing and dialogue is cliche and shit. I know your desperate for some good superman stories but for god's sake get some taste. You don't have to like it just because it has Superman in it.
Nobody likes OMD/OMIt just because it has Spider-Man in it.

Yeah, I am with you there. I can understand and see what other people are liking here. The images of Jonathan helping him to fly were great, but it's a sparse amount of stuff like that, in between a lot of meandering and, as you said, bad pacing, awful - unrealistic dialogue - the conversation between Clark and Jonathan about the broken mirror is not your standard that age child (no matter how precocious) and a parent, for example.

I appreciate the moments, like other here did, because they are so few of them in the Superman books in the last four or so years, but given something as brief as the Batman/Superman cross-over with another Earth Martha and Jonathan meet prime Earth CK is just more genuine and emotional as far as Superman feels go.

Pretty much everything Geoff Johns ever did Grant Morrison did better, but people on this board love Johns and defend him with everything they got. So i don't see why the need for such an argument.

I wrote that Johns, Busiek and Waid wrote better young CK stories. Morrison wrote THE most elegant Superman origin story. All of them, together with Loeb even, have written better Smallville stories, or CK and his parents stories.

My argument was that American Alien should not be praised for what is really not an achievement. If we were grading on a curve, a generous teacher might give him a B-, but most would give him the gentleman's "C" he richly deserves.
>>
>>77384406
this whole issue feels like max trying to go for a speilberg-esque take on clark's childhood. but it's less whimsical and inspiring and more boring and drags on

>>
>>77398828

I'm saying that your argument is a shitty one. You're comparing him to better writers and complaining. I can easily do that to a bunch of writers that /co/ love.

Justice League? Morrison wrote a better Justice League. An event centered on Darkseiod? Morrison did better. I could keep on comparing Johns to Morrison and bash him for his writing, but that won't change that /co/ loves the guy.

People liked the issue and it doesnt matter if other writers did it better. It was still a nice issue.
>>
>people with bad taste hating on Nick Dragotta

kill yourselves, all of you
>>
I only read X-Men and Green Lantern, dont know who Landis is, and I really liked this.

After reading this I think it might be easier for DC to make a Kid Superman movie than an adult Superman movie.
