New to this board and looking for some advice on things to work on as I continue pushing myself towards better art.
>>77324038
Nice! I actually like the "fine art" mixed in with a page of "scribblings of an obsessed man". It actually makes the stressed out portrait pop out even more.
>>77324053
>>77324070
These are good! The only thing I could think of for critique would maybe be some variation in the way you draw hair. Some of the silhouettes are similar to one another but I think if the hair shapes were different, it would break them up more. Like, a lot of the hair gives the head a round "O" shape, compare to the HAPPY ARTIST or BONER MAN designs whose hair give them very defined shapes.
The thing is the designs might look totally different from 3/4ths so maybe it doesn't matter, but if you want to do it in a style of seeing characters face front, then it's something to consider.
>>77324143
This is quite nice, the colors are lovely. I wouldn't have much advice for this piece, it's lovely.
A character I just kinda popped out the other night. I just really wanted a character with inky black skin. I want to refine the design a bit though. Something about it just isn't clicking for me.
>>77324380
It's a neat design that I think has an unfortunate history. Jinx and Popo make the "pitch black skin" thing difficult to do tastefully.
>>77324380
>>77324511
Yeah, sorry bud, but the little man in my heart is squinting pretty hard as to whether this is insensitive or just nonstandard character design.
>>77324038
hello ruben
Oh boy, I missed this thread.
So, I am unsure about the background on this one. I wanted to make the actual characters stick out of it and give some depth.
What you guys think? Any tip?
>>77324604
I don't know why but they feel -really- close to that BG. Almost like they're sort of 'in it'.
It does add contrast some depth though, yes.
>>77324688
Yes, pretty much this is how I felt.
I was thinking on maybe reducing the oppacity of the background, and make the shadows darker.
>>77324380
>>77324511
I like the design. I thought about the "unfortunate history" afterwards too, but it didn't bother me. It has some Nintendo design elements to it and I like it. I personally feel like it's more important to actually design things the way you want and challenge context to change itself rather than succumbing to it and trying to play everything safe so you don't get yelled at.
I mean, if you don't want to draw attention to yourself, then you know what changes to make. But if you're a "I don't give a fuck" type of artist, then do what you want.
If you want to keep the design but you don't want to draw attention to yourself, you could do something as simple as adding a white muzzle Fleischer style just to make it "not really human", but still human.
As for what is not clicking, sometimes I find looking at other art similar to mine helps for shapes and stuff. Your art reminded me of this dude so maybe this will trigger some inspiration:
http://justindurden.deviantart.com/gallery/
>>77324604
I would lighten up the BG squares (Just maybe lower the opacity) and make their cast shadows further away from their bodies to add depth. The closer the shadow is to them, the closer they are to the wall. The further away, the more their shadow has to stretch across the floor before it hits the wall, means they're further.
Stating things that are obvious ofc, but sometimes reading obvious things makes people go, "Oh yeah, it does, huh?" and it'll stick in your brain much better.
>>77324511
>>77324551
>>77324799
It helps a bit that I'm black myself. I was thinking of giving her horns sticking out of her hat or something cool like that.

Did some more work on this character. Wasn't quite sure how to reflect part of the race I'm pulling features from to reflect her heritage which includes the descriptor "You have glamored scales of sparkling mithril"
So I thought something opalescent maybe - but I wanted to retain her natural rose-red colors too. I'm trying out glitter - any suggestions from anyone else on how to fill the spirit of the above descriptor without compromising my present palette of colors?
Nothing of note but I just finished a figure drawing session

Really nice piece. Quiet elegant, no superfluous panels. Funny subversion of a familiar structure/narrative with an incoherent goo monster which comes around at the end to still be pretty heartwarming, maybe because of how ir disrupts somthing so familiar.
Personally I would have liked it more if the panels were smaller and everything was on one page, but your art has a loose, free-form quality that might not take well to that level of compression.

You should work on anatomy but that might just be a grittier style
>>77327280
I like this anatomy but are people really that saggy?
>>77327450
Kay, I understand the anatomy bit, been working on that for a while, but what's this talk about a grittier style? I'm not the best at distinguishing that kind of thing, so sorry if I'm being a bit dumb. Does that mean more realistic? Darker? What do you want me to improve on here? In the meantime, here's a woman pouring tea into her nose. I'm going to try to draw this as a challenge.
>>77327498
That's what bras are for, anon. You didn't think they were just for fashion did you?
Any tips on how to get the perspective right on the "shoulder pads" of these guys? The one on the middle one's left (or right from it's point of view) arm is being especially hard for me.
I also would appreciate any tips regarding drawing bird like wings, feathers etc.
>>77327498
Pretty much, yeah.
>>77325424
Pretty good! I would submit pictures at a smaller size. Some of the inner lines could be a bit thinner. Design is good though, reminds me of Eddsworld style.
>>77325259
>>77325442
>>77325593
These are nice, reminds me of Slender. Some of these designs would make for a good chase-you monster in an indie horror game. There's a lot of games with monsters chasing you on two legs, but it's dawning on me how creepy it would be if something crawled on you with tall four legs.
>>77325558
Cute! Nice eyes.
>>77325836
I like it! I like that pencil tool. The way you defined the torso is nice, simple but effective.
>>77326465
Very cute, very nice shapes, especially on the Dino.
>>77327280
These are good! The linework could use a tad work. The poses and anatomy is there, so it's all a matter of making your pencil strokes longer so it's not so fuzzy and scratchy. Here's just an example of holding your pencil longer and making faster, broader strokes:

>>77327449
Yes please take it as a bad sign. You're gonna suck for a long time and not know it unless someone tells you. And thats good to not cause unless no one does you'll never improve and end up like one of those shitty deviantart people. Its a raw deal I know but we all have to start somewhere. And that where is the very bottom.
At the bottom you'll need to start with getting a basic idea of human anatomy by drawing it over and over and over and over again. Then you do gestures. And you draw from life. You won't get it right at first but you will eventually. Don't give up.
And /co/. Stop being such a fucking hugbox.

Most of my characters closely resemble Undertale characters. They also predate Undertale by over a year, with several of them being over two years old. Unfortunately I can't do anything with them for a while because "OMG U COPIED UNDERTALE!!!"
>>77327753
>The linework could use a tad work.
God, I know! It feels like everytime I try and do long strokes I fuck up immediately. I guess I just gotta suck it up and practice huh?
>>77328066
It takes years just for your hand to get moderately decent at linework. And sometimes the type of pen/pencil you're using can help greatly. Sometimes just using a different kind of pencil can feel "refreshing" to you and make some of your drawings look better until you've adjusted to that, then you need to try something new again and again. Type of paper is the same way.
>>77327753
I'm suddenly liking the tall four legs idea. Especially the idea that you could walk into what seems like a set of four equally spaced trees. Then the trees start to move.
>>77327965
I know, I know. I've heard the spiel a thousand times. I've goddamn given the spiel for goodness sake!
>>77328051
Nice work. I like all of your designs. The arms on spider lady are throwing me off a bit though. I think she needs elbows
I have been practicing bodies, using some reference i got from DA and Pinterest.
>>77328230
I was going for a squidward type thing, except for both the arms and legs. She's gotta have eight limbs, and I'm still trying to come up with a good way to incorporate that in to her arms.
>>77327965
The problem is, telling someone who is starting out they suck, they suck, they suck is the wrong way to do it. It doesn't help at all to just throw a tutorial someone's way on how to draw the human anatomy and expect them to learn from that. It's like starting out a Russian class by writing out the alphabet and going "See? Just remember these then we can move on."
The best way to is give out much simpler drawings, drawings where you can see the thought process and the strokes. Basic shape tutorial and how to wrap forms around those shapes to make "skin". Another good way are linking to videos where you watch people draw basic characters, so you understand what they're thinking while they're doing it.

Is a good start to understanding gestures and a better guide rather a reference of the human skeleton, which can overwhelm someone with how detailed, refine, and rendered those drawings are.
You gotta work with someone's skill level, not just give them advanced things and expect them to get it.
>>77326465
effective linework and again, I'm digging that style. is there anywhere I can follow your art?

Well, the very rough linework for these guys is done. I still gotta do a lot of stuff for them, like the abs (muscles are a bitch to draw), the feet, and obviously the wings on the rightmost one (would appreciate any tips regarding how to draw bird like, or angelic wings.), but as it is over 2 am now, I gotta stop.
These guys are supposed to look statuesque, regal, and sorta "divine" yet still heavily organic in their appearance. Akin to beautifully sculpted statues made out of living, breathing and moving flesh and bone. I am hoping that my designs for them bring forth that sort of feel. They are warriors of a very prideful noble house, that strives towards perfection and aesthetic beauty in their creations.
I would appreciate any input on these guys any of you might have.
>>77331006
Also, for comparison, these are what warriors of another Noble house in my setting look like.

I drew a Vicky
>>77348720
Good start, especially on Vicky's right foot. But as for her body, there should be a bit more shape to her forms. Her back and butt feel a bit too flat and her body looks a bit stretched out.also her legs are different lengths.
Also the line for her butt is a bit too hard for a curve that should be under her bikini bottom.
Good start but still needs quite a bit of work.

How do the feathers on the underside of the wings fold when the wing is in this sort of position?

Any advice?

Wow, that's really cute. No doubt you'll get hate for drawing it like this, but honestly, she's really cute.
Thoughts? It's just a sketch of a character I've been thinking of using in a comic, but I'm not sure about her hair. I always have trouble with hair.
>>77368376
The hair looks a little flat, like a sheet of paper, but at the same time, a lot of the cartoony styles like this go for that look and it works pretty well. I think it looks pretty nice. The important thing is that it has a lively, animated look to it, which I think it does.
Also, she's a cute. Cute!
>>77368376
Another character. One day I'll make a comic, but not today!
>>77365340
For the time being, nothing. I literally made her on a whim and am just fleshing her out more and more.
Ideally maybe I'd make a comic about her being a demon who's fearsome and powerful but also silent and somewhat innocent. She basically goes through life and follows the rules while still occasionally doing evil stuff.
>>77368177
woah thanks you

>>77368376
You have really good flow on a lot of the body and hair but the one strand nearest her closest ear doesn't seem to follow that flow and it really sticks out to me. It's like it's starched downwards. Also I can't help but feel like her hair to be a bit bigger in the back. How you have it right now it is EXACTLY the size of her skull and I feel it should be bigger than that.
>>77370909
Either way, I love the design.

Tried to use thinner lines, for "more" detail.
I'm afraid it loses the cartoony look I'm going for
Character I named Ampersand.
Thoughts?
>>77372216
I like it, though the lines need to be thicker in shadow and thinner where there's highlights. The reason the thinner lines may look off, especially on the pants, is because the detail lines there are all about the same thickness.
>>77372427
oh, that's good advice
thanks!
>>77372415
AAAANNNNNNNDDDDD?
Sorry, the joke had to be made. But I do like the way you do the fingers. Is the face intended to be a mask or bald or some other intentional design choice? I want to know what's going on here.
>>77372108
Thanks for the advice. I'm still a bit iffy with hair. :-)
>>77372415
I'd love to introduce him to my semicolon.
>>77372584
Baldness design choice. I was trying to draw a punkish character, and planned on doin a mohawk but before I added it I decided I liked the bald look.
The reason I went with Ampersand as a name is because I was naming a bunch of characters in a similar style with just symbols instead of named.
I was inspired by /tg/s 90spunk ideas
Trying out some design techniques and different types of shading. Also having fun coming up with baffling onomatopoeia.

She looks cute
>>77372150
Thanks so much for this. I'm glad people like her. Makes me wanna do more with her.
Another day (or night in this case), another sketch.
Gonna start coloring this after I have gotten some shuteye.

id fug her

Couldn't sleep, after I realized how wings totally didn't fit the nature of the Violator at all.
So instead, spine tipped tentacles, for maximum raep.

No problem anon, your comments are greatly appreciated
I'll dump a few more sketches

that lettering is pain (please read up on how to handletter, I think Blambot has a guide on that)

Fuck you batman. Every day you mock me from the comfort of the catalog.

And that's how batman created his latest villain, "Artist Block"
Awesome stuff, y'all. Keep it coming!
I did this while I think of something better to draw aside from a comic I'm doing.
Progress...
Not exactly /co/ related but I did some doodles of Chi-chi from dragonball.

You really, seriously should consider reading the sticky. These don't really seem to have any fundamental base to them. They're flat as fuck on lined paper and messy in a medley of ways.
>That terrible feeling when someone's art gets a lot of attention and your art isn't even good enough to show yet
>>77391217
NO.
That's not what this thread is for. People have different skill levels, you have yours. This thread is about improving your work, and we can't do a damn thing to help you if you don't at least post something.
Show us some art.
>try working on paper
>get far in the drawing
>thinking "man it looks like shit, but its doesn't matter, I'm practicing"
>after awhile notice the head is way to big compared to her body
>think "It's a accident, i can fix it, Bob Ross always did"
>while thinking this I'm furiously erasing the entire thing
I failed you.
>>77391938
Then find a drawing that you HAVE completed. Feeling bad about won't help, and we can't do anything until you take that first step.
>>77392196
Well i don't have much but guess i have this, something i started before i stopped wanting to work on it.
>>77392438
Okay, so this isn't bad at all.
You've given the upper ribcage, especially around the collarbone, a great amount of volume. However, the shape that you used to denote the ribcage is too far up inside the torso. While it's the right size and looks fine at the top, the bottom will cause problems further on. The bottom curve of the ribs should fall below the breasts/pecs. If you aren't careful, this this will cause one of two problems later. Either the torso will seem too short, or the abdomen will look oddly stretched. As a rule of thumb, the top of the ribcage should line up with the center of the collar bones.
Before adding the arms, I'd recommend figuring out where the belly button and crotch are. These can be helpful for creating fitting proportions. The elbows should line up with the bellybutton, and the wrist should start at the bottom of the crotch. As it is right now, the arms are far too short.
You're off to an excellent start, and there's a few more things that you need to work on, but I have to go now. I want to see what you consider to be a finished drawing.
>>77392438
Those tits suck. Most of the anatomy is a bit off, but those tits are just horrible.
Her arm also has an extra unit for some reason (i.e. two elbows).

>>77380131
Color work more or less complete.
>>77392869
I knew that before I posted that.
>>77392839
You nailed it right on the head what my issue is. I do often see my bodies with long torsos, I think it's due to not knowing exactly how I want to block the crotch in when I'm doing the skeletal posing which i don't know if i should do 2 circles for the hip joints, a skirt, or a underwear style. If you come back and this thread is still up, any suggestions on how i can get a better at that?
>>77393217
I should be able to go back in depth in about a hour.
>>77393217
Here is a half-assed red-line that might help.
Remember that breasts aren't taped on water balloons. They follow the curvature of the chest. You don't need to draw the full outline of it unless it is silhouetted against the background.
A neat trick to get a general idea for the placement of the breasts is to draw a line down the middle of the torso then make a right angle starting from the dip in the girl's collar bone (45% angle to either side of the line).
Also the breasts curvature of the breasts blends into the arm near the deltoid.
>>77393545
Thanks, it does help just for showing me how the shoulder is supposed to look since that was the start of why I didn't want to work on it anymore since I couldn't get it right as well as how the breast connects to the arm at that angle. Ill have to remember to apply that trick when I get the chance to work on this, since that's another one of my weak points.thanks for actually showing and explaining why it was bad instead of just saying it was.
>>77393908
I usually just call it shit first to see how the person reacts as a test. If they get all defensive then I know it is a waste of my time to actually try to help them.
Don't take that red line as the gospel though. There are some mistakes in it to, no doubt, considering I did it in like 45 seconds. Just consider it a basic idea.

Alright, so next is the face. The eyes, as you show, should fall on the midline of the face. However, you seem to have misjudged the middle, and placed it too low. The bottom of the nose should be halfway between the chin and the midline of the face. The mouth should be about one third of the distance between the bottom of the nose and the chin. These are the "correct" proportions on a realistic face.
The eyes here are too close together. There should be an eyes length between them. Because of this, the eyebrows are also too close together. The nose lacks detail, and can be the trickiest part of the face to draw. My recommendation here, and in general, is to examine that style of other artists, mixing and matching what you like until you find what suites you.
Keep in mind that these are the "correct" proportions. Once you understand these, you can play around with them to suite your style, but NOT before them.
Keep up the good work, and then post the good work.
I know it's incredibly rough, but I want to know if there are any glaring mistakes before I start to clean it up.
>>77376041
Thank you
>>77378770
Hoo boy anon
>>77395684
No weight
>>77394494
That's what I was basically getting at, yes. Rounder breasts are fine too though; it just makes them look like breast implants rather than naturally large.
>>77340822
I think small wedge shaped feet would work better than the big round shoes. everything else is spot on though, this is a great character,
>>77396320
Yeah. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do small wedge feet or big cartoony shoes, but since I usually do small wedge feet I wanted to do something more out of my comfort zone. Plus it kinda fits with her whole, ultra-tacky 90's vibe.
I'm also thinking of giving her a more...inky design to go with her blackness. Like she's made from tar or ink or something just given solid form.
>>77396436
Given her a name yet?
>>77324053
>>77324070
good art but
>the feet
>>77396723
I kinda toyed around with something like Onika.
Cuz she's a demon.
Although now I kinda wanna make her name pun either something ink related or something black related. hm...
>>77348595
rather than wings, why not keep going with the muscle and white bone?
>>77397088
While a neat concept, the setting those beings are in for is not really fantasy, so the wings need to be something that can fly without magic.
Post Sketch pages, digital or otherwise.
>>77397218
So why feathers?
why not a set of wings that are bone stretched over a thin membrane, like bat wings but red?
