I finally got off my arse and started uploading my comic; sad habits. I did post this page here while back and your comments gave me the motivation to keep going, so thank you all for that

>inb4 everyone starts telling me to quit/kill myself

Right now I'm posting my comic on DeviantArt and ComicFury; I'm thinking of posting it on a bunch of other sites too. Tapastic, Smackjeeves, Tumblr, any more any of you know of?
Since I'm a beginner I don't see any point in making my own website just yet

presumably that was also the one used in the last thread. they probably linked it directly from there. and by they, I mean me. and by 'probably' i mean now i remember that is exactly what went down

I actually agree on the beak nose - the character is supposed to be not very attractive.

How do I ease my mind to draw freely? It seems that in the last year, every time I try to draw I'll do well for a bit, then begin to grow irritated, either by lack of progress or some difficulty in the drawing process. Then I get even angrier that I can't just draw, and I end up walking away to do something else.

Do you guys have any methods you use to get yourselves into the right frame of mind for art? Any drugs that might help? Music?

Please help, I'm desperate here. Art is my life.

Software and or hardware

I use micron pens although ive been told copic pens are way better to get that scratchy feel that I like.

I have a shitty scanner printer combo but it does the job.

For software I use Clip studio Paint and SAI.
Sai is great for coloring and getting cool line effects, whereas Clip is good for everything else. oh and photoshop. for like, touchups and shit.
>>
>>80790887
Photoshop CS6 by force of habit, tried every alternative I can come up with and always come back to good ol' PS.
Hardware I use an intuos pro medium.

nice use of color
but two things

1-its a personal pet peeve of mine so maybe its fine but you should only use comedic chibi faces to amplify a joke, not just cause and especially not more prevalent than their regular expressions

2-if youre going to parody rpg with generic characters, push it even further, maybe have the character themselves be parodies

>>
>>80793519
as long as you make it good
or make them bonus comics?
>>
>>80793570
But I'm so confused, I thought about going clean but I just end up getting bored and thinking with my dick.

I always think, "Well this is going to be fun to do" then I draw the setup and I get bored and the demon inside me is like "You're a pervert, draw those girls giving sloppy blowjobs" then I have a lot fun with that instead

>>80793640
>or make them bonus comics?

The problem with that is I could create a fanbase with not into lolicon, so if I come out with doing a bonus comic where one of the little girls is in girl scouts and with the need of sales, she convinces buyers with purchasing their cookies by bjs then it just becomes a bit odd and shocking for that fanbase.
>>
>>80793519
i mean, my mind went to sexy things too, but not full-on gross hardcore stuff like giant cocks and ahegao. I imagined in-character stuff that girls might actually tease each other with at a sleepover or something. i think you need to good-bacteria those demons a bit with some lesser minor perversions that drown them out
>>
>>80793298
If you want it to look more dragony, what I would do would lengthen the neck and tail regions a bit, first off, though mostly the neck so the dragon head can stick out more. Second, I see what you're going for with the limbs, but maybe the dragon aspect can be better communicated if those legs were more reptilian than crustacean.

It's a really strong start to a design, I need to say.

For myself, I'm actually going back to updating my own webcomic tomorrow. I have 3 pages done so far, the first is queued for tomorrow. I'm planning two updates a week, should fortune favor me.
>>
how does one start a web comic? please cover things like:
>getting a website
>hardware needed
>is this poorfag friendly?
>>
How do I get smooth lines when drawing? I have a bamboo touch and trying to get really smooth lines
>>
>>80793967
You can go the website route, and advertise your website, or you can go the easier route and upload to a website like Tapastic. The latter is better if you're a new name, since getting a readership on a website of your own can be quite hard, unless you know someone who is already popular.
>>
>>80793967
>getting a website
You could get a website and have really nice presentation. Or, you could just host it on a blogging site like WordPress or Tumblr and format your blog to look nice.

>hardware needed
A drawing tablet of any description is nice. Wacom does some good ones. Otherwise, if you do traditional, you would need a really good scanner that doesn't make your stuff look like trash.

>is this poorfag friendly?
Depends on what type of job you have, how much time to work on your comic you'd have, etc.

You can maybe open a patreon or get ad revenue if you get moderately popular. There is nothing wrong with just doing it for free (for now)
>>
>>80793967
you dont need a whole lot of hardware in fact at minimum, all you really need is a basic wacom. You dont need a super expensive tablet to make good art (or a tablet at all).
you can go the pencil paper route and scan your stuff in and edit it on your computer (tablet still recommended for editing)
>>
>>80794048
>Tapastic
>revenue
seems good, do you use it? Also what programs/ computer hardware would be needed to make a full comic?
>>
>>80794109
>>80794134
would a regular android tablet work or would it have to specifically be a "drawing tablet"?
>>
>>80794251
I fucking hate apple and android for fucking bringing in confusion over tablets

i mean i guess if you can get one that lets you use a pen and some nice art programs like CSP, Photoshop, SAI, go ahead. Otherwise, stick to Wacom.
>>
>>80794297
when looking for a tablet i'd imagine the ones with a display of what i was drawing would be ideal, correct?

Tapastic was easier when it allowed readers to donate to you directly. Gave me a nice bit of extra disposable income every month. It's since then changed entirely to ad revenue. The ad revenue is pretty small but if you get a few thousand views on your weekly episodes, you will have a good 40-50 Dollars every 2 months or so.

Nothing special, but it's something.

>>80794381
ideal, but since money seems to be a concern for you, I wouldn't recommend it for your circumstance. Hell, even I don't have one of those.

>>80794396
You could set up a quick little 3d model of primitive shapes that can be posed, that would help out with not only drawing it multiple times, but would aid in more complex scenes.
>>
>>80794381

>>
>>80794251
it all depends on what your comfortable with. They are nice because you can draw on the display.
But since money is an object, you can buy a wacom. The toughest part about drawing tablets is breaking into it and getting used to it
>>
>>80793769
>I could create a fanbase with not into lolicon
you could have implications in the comic
you dont need full on porn to show they're dirty lil' sinners
>>
>>80793570
Can't they be innocently cheeky and/or hormonal without having to go full slutty? A friend of mine told me the goddamn cutest story about when she was little and decided she wanted to be a stripper, and did a burlesque show for her parents, who humored and praised her performance. Because they are the best parents ever. And unlike offspring of strict dumbasses, she grew up fine and chaste
well til she hit the SJW crowd in college but that's another story entirely
Shit like the naked dare in the Parent Trap was in a full-on family friendly disney movie. people used to be able to joke about these things. Sailormoon as I recall...

It was hard for me to tell wh at the joke was. at first I thought the mob died after witnessing her cute ass and was lying in a pool of his own noseblood.

the chest/rare get/embarassment on her face, the three pillars of the joke, were not very clear.

you should have her kill the thing in panel 3 simply by connecting the sword to the dragon, and in the 4th panel focus solely on the 3 things listed above.

ohhh yeah i get it now. i didnt get it either
the problem is you dont see her in whatever she's in to start with
>>
>>80795437
yes, this too. I think this is actually more important. You can keep everything as is as long as in the first/second panel you show her prominantly in whatever lowergarments she wears.
>>
>>80794487
Probably wouldn't be very high. You get money off views, and you generate views per episode you upload. That means no matter the length of your episodes, it wont impact the outcome of revenue generated.

That is why short strips thrive on that site, rather than longer, story-driven webcomics. If you want, you could divide your pages into an episode each. Would certainly generate a lot more views, but readers might get frustrated, due to the layout not really properly supporting that kind of reading.
>>
>>80795347
>dragon
i meant the demon thing. it's not your art, i'm just really stoned. i know how it feels when it feels like people aren't able to/don't care enough to understand the art you do. art is good.

I want to do two webcomics. But, I don't want to get in trouble with the law. ('Murican)

1.) I wanna do a webcomic starring a lady protagonist and her adventures in a polyandrist relationship with a bunch of cool monster bros. There's no inter-personal relationship drama. They're hedonistic. This is not some shitshow "Bella! Jacob! Edward" bullshit, they're reasonable adults just fond of one lady in her D&D-like quest. In fact, they mesh so well together because they're awful people that genuinely don't mind sharing.

The problem with this idea is I won't want people with an axe to grind stalking me and trying to get me to toe whatever progressive bullshit they want me to put in my comic or call me "problematic" or whatever.

2.) I wanna do a webcomic starring a bunch of similarly adventuring shota. Yep, exactly how it sounds. Sometimes it's smut, sometimes it's action fighting mystery solving. But often, it's young protagonists bedding hot babes.

Or a combination of the two.

No, I don't want to turn this into a /co/ project, because quite honestly I'd eventually want to monetize it. :P
But, as I can't draw nor pay for art, it's just writing for me. It exists as a bunch of crude story layouts because I don't believe in starting a project that is open ended and capable of running out of material before it's given a proper ending.
>>
>>80795574
i see what you mean, it may just be up to quality over quantity then
>>
>>80795747
there's no laws against doing two webcomics in the land of the free, citizen.
nor against doing a 63'd monstergirl-comic which is what that sounds like
nor what mercifully it DOESN'T sound like you mean is an adventuring lord of the flies thing. hot babes you say? that sounds fantastic. and pretty goddamn legal
and it's CERTAINLY not illegal to make a buck or two. What that has to do with /co/ I have no idea.
Now as for getting someone to draw it for you, that's more on the 'dream' side of american dream. Even if you could somehow make enough money to pay the artist (what does he need you for? do you have really REALLY good story ideas?) which isn't likely given how much money they need to be able to live (because it's slow work, not because it's remotely in high demand. quite the opposite, there's hungry artists everywhere. but you still can't make them work for less than they need. that's why most people do-without. kinda like handymen), you can't really expect it to be like your vision unless the artist has all the same fetishes as you. the same muse as it were, is required, if you want this to come out good enough to make money.
i'm happy to hear you have layouts but..

>the more unapologetic you seem in your writing, the less fuss people kick up
that's because the people who claim to be speaking their minds are always speaking someone else's mind and hoping that person will come back them up. If you're confident enough that you sound like you already have a personal army, they won't be as eager to challenge it.

That's because modern PC culture has gotten used to people bending over backwards whenever they get called a "racist" or whatever. When met with the slighest oposition, they move onto an easier target

>>80797579

How many artists you guys know that want to get into webcomics, but keep pulling stupid shit about how they are a failure and delete everything they do?

Yesterday ciderward was having one of those tantrums, and today when I woke up I found he just deleted fucking everything.

Is this prevalent? How can it be dealt with? I'd like to help people who I love their art, but keep giving up.
>>
>>80801643
As someone who has done the exact same thing I think it helps to be reminded of the bigger picture. Everyone is shit before they can get better, there's no fast-track to success.

But it's not the actual racists who bend over backwards, it's the people who are terrified of being thought of as one

>>
>>80809716
Not all Arabs are incredibly devout Muslims, just as not all Americans are evangelical Christians.

I'd say that it's highly probable that cartoonists from the Middle East are writing in Arabic, and thus less likely to become known to Anglophone readers. Same with cartoonists from Far Eastern countries like Malaysia and Thailand, etc.
>>
>>80809716
It's also against the ten commandments but most Christians don't tend to follow that one.

yeah but that does skew the results. the culture has an effect on the proportion of webcomics artists that belong to this or that group

>>

it isnt though. that's a drastically radically misunderstood commandment. kinda like the taking the lord's name in vain thing. the difference is one is europeans being ignorant of their religion's judaic roots, the other is middle eastern people who know exactly what jews are about, but hate them, and think they're the real descendants of abraham, and change their version of things til they're totally retarded

It is.

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth:"

It's why certain fundamentalist christian sects like puritans, amish, or jehovah's witnesses don't use representational art.

People like to ignore it and say "Well, what it REALLY means is..." but that's what it says. All the Abrahamic faiths are basically the same and you have to be really nitpicky to find the differences.
>>
>>80812180
>king james version
an unfortunate hindrance to christianity it has carried with it like heavy metal poisoning for centuries. all because of antisemitism
>>
>>80812180
>>80812347
er, though in this case the problem is abbreviation. you excise a sentence and ignore the preceding and subsequent lines, you can make anything say just about anything.
>>
>>80812447
>what it REALLY means is...

There you go, proving my point. Most Christians just ignore it.
>>
>>80812607
more like 'what it REALLY says in the previous and next bits'. it's literally a phrase in the middle of a commandment (well a lot of people think it's two but it's pretty clearly one. lutherans call it one, but then they split the last one into two because they're weird)

not to belabor the point, just saying, it's important to get your shit right, especially when dealing with anything people care about. that's hella important for webcomics or any kind of creative act. You don't wanna take Nietzche's "god is dead" as a murder confession for example. Call it 'nitpicky' if you want, being loose and lazy with your quotation and referencing is a great way to be the kind of wrong that fucks up people's shit, instead of just the kind that makes you look like an idiot.
>>
>>80812607
>Yahweh gets mad at his people for bowing down to a golden calf out of boredom
>Next chance he gets he has them add little golden statues to the edges of his magic box that may or may not have contained fatally radioactive material
Golly gosh what an inconsistency. Religion must be totally wrong and fake and everyone who believes in it is an idiot who NEVER noticed that inconsistency before! It's not as if I've missed a key "and worship it" bit that was right there in the text. Nope, it's them. They're the stupid ones, not me.

i really implore ya, if you're only at page 2, it's not too late to pick a better font. granted this isn't exactly a masterpiece of a comic yet but why hold yourself back?
also i love that our mailman has to just WALK everywhere, even up mountains. no winged horse for you, mailman. not even a special hat or a mail sack. which would probably make for a more interesting character design
>>
>>80816493
very interesting. it's a bit more swirly than any real world log i'm aware of, but it does suit the general comic aesthetic (love those little grass puffs)
without tilting the perspective slightly and then making those lines not only converge but show curvature as they go towards the ceiling, i don't see any way to tell the viewer that the interior is cylindrical, so as long as it's not THAT important.. you have an establishing shot right? you'll be fine

sure but then youre stuck using a ludicrously unnecessarily large pen all the time and having to zoom for precise pixel control. my OCD will not allow that. not yet. working on it. that's just a waste if the only real advantage is it lets you draw tiny things in the background sometimes.
>>

have you tried reference? swamps have very muddy, dark and earthy colors with parts easily hidden in darkness and shadow since it's so cluttered
youre using colors that are too warm and light imo
your log is fine, but the greenery could be darker

>>80817704
youre maybe thinking too big, even 8 x 8 inch at 300 dpi is more than enough for the average webcomic page
also you only have to zoom in for details and even then shouldnt be too much as backgrounds lose information
>>
>>80818321
well i think my point is that... in order for background details to be legible, non-background details need to be much bigger than they need to be. And that's a tough sell to someone as lazy as me (who really enjoys how indistinct backgrounds are at a smaller size and how you can kinda Monet your way to quick completion with the illusion of detail)
but I know I need to use a bigger canvas anyway, and I'm woikin' on it.

For those of you with Manga Studio 5 and Clip Studio Paint, there's a new update available to download from the Clip Studio site.

In the interests of consolidating everything as Clip Studio Paint, MS5 users can use their current serial number to activate a new install of CSP, and it will find all your saved materials, brushes, etc.

You can now create animations in the new version. They've also improved the file optimisation; old MS files unfortunately suffered from getting bloated. However, files opened and saved with the latest version won't be able to be opened with an earlier version of the software.

Installed and tried it out briefly; while I'm seeing massive improvements in file sizes, converting all the old bloated MS5 .lip files to optimised CSP .clip files will be tedious and a half.

which commandment says that?

the phrasing basically goes

Good policy, but thinking you have to inject religiony things into everything is more a sign of WEAK faith than strong, if you ask me.

i might be misunderstanding but what i mean is you dont have to change the foreground to match the background
you just make sure the bg is more diluted, like pic related, the bg is really foggy and basic as fuck (lost information), but we still know what it is
basically work normally, just work less for background, in either case its worth a try
>>
>>80818707
Aaaand back on the subject of webcomics, that kinda goes for any issue you've got bubbling inside you, political, social, whatever. It's good to express yourself in your comic, but if you feel like EVERYTHING is a nail, maybe you've got hammers on the brain to an unhealthy extent.
>>
>>80818907
Sure absolutely. I just mean like, if you want books on a table in the background to have funny titles, but you really don't think it's worth devoting space to a close-up of that bookpile. Sometimes you feel like you wish you could just let people zoom if they felt like it, or ignore it if they don't
modern cartoons seem to work in a ludicrously high resolution, i suppose it's vectorized? so you can watch something that looks like in the old days it would have been drawn with 5-inch-high cels but the background actually has all these tiny zoomable details. and maybe the creators' blog even HAS those backgrounds in hi res and you can check them out in details unseeable on the show, yknow?
>>
>>80818982
ah
yeah text and the like need to be clarified and precise. i suppose your only other alternative is to change the way your easter eggs look into more perceptible things, like book covers instead of book titles, which is probably even better
>>
>>80819255
shit i hadnt thought of that. i'm gonna do that next time i do that. make it a book with a goatse on the cover or something.

i should also remember that shit drawn big and downscaled remains a lot more legible thanks to aliasing and shit, so if i'm ever like 'this is just a BIT too small to be readable' i can try writing it bigger and shrinking

Making webcomics is good and all because you do it on your own time, but when it comes to voices, you'd have to slog through your list of friends with good voices, convincing them to take time out of their free schedule to help you.

Of course a racist won't; the poster unde rme put it quite perfectly: it IS people who are afraid of being called a racist who will go out of their way to prove they're not.
Truth is, most people in the modern Western world aren't racist, if they were then people whouldn't be so afraid of being singled out as one.
That's what I was sort of trying to get across when I said that people who are unapologetic about what they want in their comic (like shota), won't actually be met with much oposition for major "transgressions", unlike people who try to be on PC culture's good side will and for minor transgressions

I guess I will post this. Today is my proper day off, but I didn't spend my time working on this, I mostly working on my porn comic and playing video games.

Is there anybody who is holding down a full time job? Can someone give me some tips about keeping up drawing a comic? Does it just comes down to cutting out your other hobbies and treat it like a second job?

How do you structure your time and how do you keep yourself disciplined?

If you don't connect with an audience, how do you keep yourself from falling off the wagon? From getting depressed about the project? Do you just do your project for your own gratification? To be honest if that were truely the case, I'll probably be working a very different project and in my head not too much better than sonic chu...

Hey, is the Discord chat still around? I haven't been on in a few months but I went to check it out today and it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Be honest, did you come up with this guy after playing Bloodborne?
>>
>>80835781
You celebrate that in Germany?
>>
>>80835887
Hm, Its potentially one of my influences, but I only have a passing glance at that. I don't even own a PS4...

I wanted a Victorian feeling with that dude. Although now I look at bloodborne stuff more closely I am like, "goddammit". Its like back in the day I have a character name Ruby Sapphire and then Steven Universe happened.
>>
>>80836115
Sort of gives me a Dishonored/Court of Owls feel more than Bloodborne purely; not to mention my mind first went to niblewrights from D&D. If the costume isn't out of place within the universe, it isn't bad and I doubt it alone will draw comparisons.
>>
>>80836115
It's mostly the combination of that exact shade of grey victorian clothing with the anime daggers and the tricorner silhouette+mask.
>>
>>80836184
Hm, potentially. I haven't decided on the motif of his character's faction yet. Typically Victorian is a motif associated with a different faction, but anyway.

>>80836294
... I just found a picture of bloodborne guy in the front and you are right about that. I am going to lay down.
>>
>>80835933
Not really, but we have Irish Pubs and we drink all the time. I kinda want to celebrate it, though.
>>
>>80827289
i always mean to include them in mine but i just forget. like it never comes up. probably because i never do any myself. but the characters are supposed to enjoy booze and weed.
>>
>>80829495
beats the fuck out of photoshop's primitive animated gif making i reckon

If you think any real voters are involved in that and not just a big clickbaity conspiracy to make money off of stabbing democracy in the balls, you're a cog in their machine

Now that I am revising him, I kept coming up with ideas for him... he is just suppose to be a side character.

Also, aww man, I just can't be original for once. lol
>>
>>80836427
It happens dude. people have always been fascinated with combining those aspects, since LONG before bloodborne. ever seen vampire hunter D?

How do you get viewers without shilling there? I can draw quite decently but I never broke the ~10 views per update line when I used it. I saw tons of other series with only a few pages but thousands of followers though but I don't know what those people were doing aside from uploading to even get there.

Another page going to the garbage. It is plot error (the dog getting hunger for no reason at all) and it will probably confuse some people.

you may have confused this thread for the garbage. some days i can't blame you.
I don't see how getting hungry is a plot error..

clip studio paint

Sai's fine if you just want to illustrate a picture, but if you're going to make comics it's best to have something that supports text.

gotta turn your stabilizer off to write
>>
>>80838251
so she asked for food and the dog provided.. but the dog's still hungry. so it's kind of a risk, like is a hungry person going to risk their food for luck
>>

Does it make good 'business sense' to draw fanart of super popular stuff EG Undertale in order to lure in more views, or is it just more likely you'll get buried in the mix?

>>80823845
For what it's worth I actually watched that series AFTER concepting this comic but that's a pretty accurate observation

>>80789429
>>80829745
Thanks, I see it now.

I'm not the only one who suddenly finds previously-invisible flaws extremely, painfully obvious once they've been pointed out, r-right?

Whats a good way to work for a couple of hours on drawings or writing? I usually work for like half and hour to an hour, and i want to do more. Some say I shouldnt force creativity. But I feel like i could do better. But sometimes i quickly lose steam and then it gets hard to be creative.
>>
>>80838768
I got my tumblr up to around 3k followers by doing fanart before I started Ennui GO!

>>80838872
idk, I usually work for about 8 hours a day on my various commissions and projects. Then again, this is my day job. Not everybody has that kind of time.

1. Close your eyes
2. See your imagination waifu.
3. Talk to her.
4. Get a gun
5. Put the bullet in the gun
6. Put the gun in the mouth
7. Lick it little bit.
8. Put the gun out of your mouth
9. Watch cartoon network for nine hours
10. Go to sleep.

making is work - don't work when you only feel "creative" or "inspired." constructing a comic is like building a house - there's lots of fun parts, parts that come easily, parts that are boring, difficult, etc. set time aside to complete a comic like it's homework. make goals and allot the amount of time you'd need to make them. if you finish your task early, no need to push yourself into more unless you're really "on." but, tl;dr, think of it more like a job than recreation. it will change how you approach your comic.

Photoshop.

I pencil on paper, ink in Manga Studio, then the rest in photoshop.
