They need to release more Basil Wolverton collections
>>
>>83824442
He does actually

I met him at Long Beach Comic Con at the DC panel, before DC and Marvel realized that the con would be way smaller than anyone expected.

Someone asked the million dollar question about Young Justice and Didio said that book to him showed how much redundancy was in the DCU, where there were so many books that had "knock off characters" doing nothing. Part of the reason there is constantly line wide events and reboots is because Didio's vision is for all the books to fit into a tapestry and have a bigger goal inside the DCU

Which is all horseshit because he's only messed everything up with that thinking

Characters "doing nothing" can be refreshing in contrast to big high dtakes stories.
>>
>>83824935
There is an older Ballad of the Salt Sea collection that's apparently awful. Beyond the ugly cover IDW's collections have been solid
>>
>>83824951
Especially if you have a writer that really good at solid character focused writing, like Peter David. I don't think he's ever just straight up done a big end of the world plot unless it's in his Aquaman run

>>83824944
Corporate synergy. Giving food to their toy, tv, and movie licenses

>>83824951
Yeah. You think of the best DC books like Starman, Chronos, Young Heroes in Love, all those Vertigo books before Vertigo became a separate entity, just creative teams having fun exploring the depths of the characters

Superman's Pal is the driest to read comic and the cosmic hippies of the Forever People I can't stand.
>>
>>83834152
>Stan's soap style dialogue
I find the Thor dialogue kind of charming. All the thees and thous
>>
>>83833979
I felt that way for a long time, now I read old shit pretty much exclusively.

Just recently I read the ASM omni and turned right back to the start and read it agian.

I did find Buisick/Perez Avengers unreadible for this exact same reason though. So ot isn't old comics. Hell, Earth X, for example, makes Stan Lee look terse by comparison. As for old comics, I really only have this problem with Shooter and Roy Thomas. Guy like Clairmont, Wolfman, Moench, Lee and Kirby entertain the fuck out of me.
>>
>>83834292
Earth X is weird because you are right I should absolutely hate it, and the narrative structure of it is really boring but I don't.
>>
>>83834292
I can deal with Thomas on Conan and nothing else

Also EC comics were over written like no ones business, but I still enjoy them
>>
>>83834228
Yeah Stan is perfect for Thor, really. He is goid with early, fucked up, just barely missed being a super villian , Peter Parker too.
I like him on the FF from about the Wedding on as well.
Yeah, I like Stan Lee. It's kinda weird.
>>
>>83834400
Thomas Conan rocks, he sucks at everything else though.
Englert's another one I cannot stand, really.
>>
>>83834426
>Yeah, I like Stan Lee. It's kinda weird.
It's real hard to deny that charm. Right now in your head you can hear him saying " Excelsior!" or "Greetings, True Believers" and either of them probably make you smile a bit
>>
>>83834041
It was alright, I didn't like the Swierczynski stuff as much as the first half that's in the omni.
>>
>>83834490
When it comes to PR, Brevoort makes Stan look like Ghandi and Jesus all at once.
>>
>>83834292
Wolfman I can't slog through. I powered through 7 volumes of Essential Spider-man but his made my bingeing come to a halt.

I've had New Teen Titans sitting there collecting dust because I can't get past the first 10 issues. His Superman was pretty clunky too

>>83834208
Yeah, Jimmy Olsen is the worst of the bunch but I blame that all on Jimmy Olsen as a character.
>>
>>83834292
One of the first comics I spent my own money on as a kid was that 4th issue of Busiek Perez Avengers and Claremont/Larroca FF

Then I fell off and got back in with Shonen Manga years later and never looked back.

I like my comics like that Elvis song, with a little less conversation and a bit more action.
>>
>>83834564
>I blame that all on Jimmy Olsen as a character.

I blame the Newsboy Legion. Fuck those characters

>>83824226
>What is your Dream collected edition?
Colossal Conan, still mad I didn't buy it and now I can't find it anywhere for a reasonable price.
Also The Legion of Super Heroes Archive Editions, will shill out the dough for all of LoSH vol 5 next month, then starting with those, got a few comic shops around here who sell them for around €50 each, which is "relatively" reasonable and they look fancy as fuck.

>>83827556
hey I have the complete set of that Silmarillion + Hobbit + LotR and the first book of that Horus Heresy visions stuff but I read it on the bus and it got horribly warped when I didn't close a water bottle properly and put it in my bag.

>Dream Collected Edition
Freaks' Squelle in English version.
I'd kill to have that translated. Otherwise I may end up buying the French versions and suffering through the language barrier.

Other recent purchases not included in this pic were Marvel Masterwork's Atlas Era Battlefield. I give it a solid 8/10, really cool, even though some of the stories are weak.
DC: The New Frontier I'd say is a solid 9.5/10, if not a 10/10.
Enjoyed the hell out of Polar and Rebels. I'll be buying Polar v. 3 when it comes out.

July's planned purchases:
Deadly Class HC, Animal-Man Omnibus, Golden-Age Superman v. 1 and 2, and Richard Stark's Parker: Martini Edition.

>>83851224
Some people don't know how ebay auctions work

Like me, what's bad about what they do?
>>
>>83853026
Mindless bidding war is never good.
People enter their maximums. Then when they are outbid, they think "Well, I can certainly pay $2 and outbid this bidder" and the cycle continues.

Best thing to do is wait until the last moment, or use a sniper software, and enter your max bid.
If you win, then you're happy to pay that amount.
If you lose, then you wouldn't have been happy to pay above you max anyway.

Never read Ultimates v3 or Ultimatum. Never do it, believe me. Skip over it and read the stuff after that if you like because it gets a bit better then again, but seriously, ignore Ultimates v3 and Ultimatum. Jeff Loeb had a bad reputation before that but with those 2 titles he pretty much killed any credibility he still had and he literally destroys everything you ever liked about the UU. Better just read some summary of it instead of the actual comic.

Busiek in general does always get ignored it seems, even though he's one of the top writers in the industry, if anything then simply for the fact that he doesn't really make bad choices in character development and he generally stays on a run for quite some time to get his ideas fleshed out.
He had a lot of control in Marvel at the time of his Iron Man run, he also did Avengers and Thunderbolts.

My cat got loose in the attic the other day and found this laying on the floor and I have to wonder why I don't sell this stuff when some of the collections in this thread look so good and I don't even think about what I have stuffed away.

That's worth like $10-20.

Why not just enjoy it instead of going through all that hassle? It's nice owning a piece of history.

Is it really? Figured it would be more. Have a lot of sixties Xmen too but not the first twelve issues. I'm holding on to it expecting it to be worth more but it is becoming cluttering. Endless boxes of 70s and on boxes.

I'm pretty jelly right now. Oldest comic I own are the Asterix comics of my dad and a certain Legion of Super Heroes issue that was released in the month/year I was born (actual release date, not cover date), wonder what my parents were thinking buying it?

It's worth *some*, but we're talking chump change - as long as you have a job that pays more than minimum wage, it's worth it just to hold onto them. They'll always be worth more down the line, and owning rare comics in of itself is fun. Really only get rid of them if they're: a) worthless, or b) taking up too much space that they're a burden.

Single issues and runs with gaps in them are also worth significantly less than full sets, so it's also worth just, yknow, collecting if that is ever your hobby. I have 10,000+ comics, and they paid for themselves just by buying incomplete runs, and amassing the same collection twice, selling one to pay for the other.

I still need to read his Thunderbolts, I enjoyed his Avengers for the most part.

My oldest comic is Avengers #2 and #6 (sadly, there was no #4 in the shop). I got both for $5 at a shop in Japan, pretty sure a soldier had them in the 60s and their Japanese kid just sold it off not knowing anything about it.

I keep going back to that shop in hopes that there are some more finds like that, but it's mostly just Powerpuff girl comics...
