Why can't I live off $29?
>>
>>7730909
Because you don't know how to be poor.
>>
>>7730909

Seven Limes lmao
Seven of them!
Lmao
>>
>>7730909
lol snap ≠ food stamps. it's supposed to supplement people's income. why do people think people using snap only get $29 a week for groceries? they probably also have a job or some other income source.
>>
>>7730928

hence the name, supplemental nutrition assistance program

Seven limes. A giant bunch of cilantro. An avocado. Green onions. A bunch of leafy greens.

This woman is a fucking idjit. Get flour and make your own tortillas. Get more rice and beans instead of water in a food form. Get some cheap oil for frying things and adding in more calories. If you have a cheap meat, buy a pound or two. I can feed myself and wife for $30 a week np.
>>
>>7730934
which is why gweneth paltrow saying "snap (ie. food stamps)" isn't really helping anyone. it just gives the illusion that she is willing to do something to improve the diet of poor americans.
>>
Like its our fault that someone is fucking lazy enough to not have any of their won money to buy food with

I live off 25/week, it's not hard. Might not be that healthy though. I have lived off less though, even 9/week but that REALLY sucks, like unimaginably so
>>
>>7730909
>that pic
Like 90% of that food mass should be rice, beans and peas instead of all that other expensive crap.

>Why can't I live off $29?

Just you? You can easily live of 29 bucks per week. Just make huge quantities of soups and stews, freeze most of it for later and buy ingredients in bulk. Get a huge pot, I use a 17 Liter pot. I would use a bigger one, but my stove is too small.

Goto cheap ingredients are:
>tinned tomatoes
>onions
>peas
>beans
>chicken
>ground meat
>eggs

For cheap carbs buy
>parboiled rice
>potatoes
>corn

Cheapest fruits appear to be apples.
>>
>>7731039

>apples
>cheap

theyre both expensive and nutritionally nearly worthless

pineapples are way better, but even oranges are cheaper
>>
>>7730909
looks good to me, that's enough beans and rice to get me through a week.
>>
>>7730909
>not stocking up on cambells chunky and huge bags of rice
jeez people are stupid
>>
>>7731061
Yeah, might vary depending on where you live.
>>
Because the gated community hollywood elite said you can't.
>>
>>7730976

you can do $10/week pretty easy

bread + peanut butter + jelly + eggs + ramen + rice + beans + tortillas
>>
>>7731074
You could even fit some fresh vegetables in there. Cabbages and carrots are cheap as dirt.
>>
>>7731099
>>7731074
OK well I do this shopping a lot, and I'm good with numbers so:
bread 2.98 10 servings
peanut butter 3.00 10 servings
jelly 2.00 10 servings
eggs 2.00 4 servings (if it's a dozen)
ramen 5.00 25 servings
rice 5.00 8 servings (assuming a cup of rice/meal)
beans .79 3 servings
tortillas 3.00 12 servings

a serving here is the amount needed in a meal

And this is before any cheese (which is necessary for tortillas), you aren't getting any vegetables or fruits (no, jelly does not really count), and most of your diet is starches
You're looking at approximately 2 meals a day of very simple foods
its really not pretty easy

you'd have to look for better sources, from either farmers markets or something similar
>>
people do realize food stamps aren't supposed to just go and pay for everything, right? you are still supposed to use your own money, the government assistance is just supposed to help supplement the shortcomings
>>
>>7731186
I don't think these "29 challenge" (or whatever it's called) people understand this. I also don't think they are going to do anything to actually improve the diet of poor people, or that they really care that much. they just do this to get attention.
>>
>>7730909
It's a $29 SUBSIDY. It's not meant to cover the entire bill. Fucking SNAP ("food stamps")'s first word is "supplemental."

For fuck's sake. I can excuse some rich cunt paid millions to play pretend not knowing this but the amount of people who just hop on the bandwagon to show how compassionate they are are brutally stupid.

>>

it says safeway on the bean and rice bags, and she is probably in southern california.

but seriously, who buys just one tomato or just one onion or just one sweet potato? she probably bought a couple of each of those and it came up to $29.
>>
Jesus, food is cheap in America
>>
>>7731306
It really is. I spend maybe $100 a month at the store, and most of that is chicken and very little carbs because of /fit/. A jar of peanut butter/jelly, loaf of bread, canned veggies, milk, eggs, and several lbs of chicken. Most of that will last longer than a week and I still haven't gone over $25
>>
>>7730909
Just an FYI that's horribly inaccurate. I've been unemployed for a while because of injuries while I worked at US as an a.m. preloader. Workman's comp only took care of hospital bills an union was no help. My wife, child and myself are on snap in Virginia and we get $511 per month for food. The amount you get depends on the state you live in as well as how much income you have. My father in law in PA only gets 200 for example, but food is cheaper where he lives. Also to dispel another myth, benefits are no longer "food stamps" it's a card like a debit card, EBT. Makes it an automated system that prevents people from buying liquor as people think is done. Also means you can't buy cooked food like pizzas and those rotisserie chickens at walmart, has to be uncooked, or cold food like sandwiches.
>>
>>7731438
Stupid typo... UPS...
>>
As a single person who gets $194 a month from SNAP, that sounds like a load of shit.
>>
>can only spend 30 bucks a week
>buy six limes
>>
>>7731137
In what world does a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly only do 10 sandwiches? It could probably do triple that, if not more.
>>
>beans
>cilantro
>six limes

Someone needs to make one with grape koolaid, frozen fried chicken and several watermelons

Because she is a patronizing idiot.

Or because she purposefully chose those foods to make it look like you can't feed yourself with $29.
>>
>>7731061
>nutritionally nearly worthless
this is SUCH a shit meme. Apples have a ton of nutrients and are an ideal travelers food. Apples are only considered so worthless because whenever diet fads find a meme fruit they compare it in some favorable way to apples. Why do they compare them to apples? because apples are great

Eating off of almost nothing is easy. Carbs are piss cheap.

Eating a healthy and tasty diet of meat, fruit, and veggies is where a lack of income can really kick your ass.

>>7730955

I'd say that assistance should be far more geared towards low income than no income.

My aunt (I'm not going to try to claim that her life situation wasn't completely her fault; she would have agreed) actually lost money by choosing to work her low income job rather than quit and go on welfare. She wouldn't have gotten evicted several times if she had taken welfare baby route.

Someone should never make less money than they could be making by choosing to work.
>>
>>7731417
>very little carbs
>peanut butter
>jelly
>loaf of bread

:^)
>>
>>7732346
This, here in the UK the welfare system is abused badly.

A couple on the right benefits can easily take home more than a couple who work full time for minimum wage.

It fucking sickens me.
>>
>>7732366
Sounds like a problem with the minimum wage
>>
>>7732386
The minimum wage is fine, people have enough money to pay the bills, feed themselves and have money left over for a few luxuries.

But on the right benefits a couple can easily take home over £30,000 a year (about $45,000).
>>
>>7731438
>Prevents people from buying liquor

My fucking ass. Here in michigan three quarters of the liquor stores have big ass signs saying they take ebt for anything, and the ones that dont have the signs still do it. Shit, I have known drug dealers who let people pay with ebt as well. And I dont just mean in the seedy areas and ghettos either. Dont buy the bullshit.
>>
>>7732388
I don't know what stuff costs where you live. Where I live, that's enough to rent a cheap windowless room and have a monthly bus pass and eat cheap, monotonous garbage every day. With nothing going to savings and no cushion to handle an unexpected expense

Basically, one medical crisis away from living on the streets.
>>
>>7731211
The fact remains though that the vast majority on SNAP didn't apply for it until there income dropped to $0. Sure, some people are working poor, and use SNAP as it is intended. But you don't really think about it until you no longer have ANY money to feed yourself and your kids. And I don't know where dear Gweneth get's her data from, but here in Cali a family of four would be getting closer to $100 a week.
>>
>>7732392
This is the UK, healthcare is free at the point of contact.

That is more than enough money to survive on.
>>
>>7732418
You trying to convince a socialist? Don't waste your time. They are broken.
>>
>>7732590
I know, bitching about $45,000 a year being not enough to live on.

ITS FREE FUCKING MONEY
>>
29 dollars is just enough for me.
It's a 25 dollar donation to go to my local food bank. And I can get all sorts of goodies.
This bitch would never survive being poor.

Hell, before my mother knew about food banks we ran on cup Ramen, and ham sandwiches. You don't need luxuries like seven limes to live.
>>
>>7732598
>It's free money
What do you rethugnicans think welfare is for? There's no point in giving away money if it's not enough to achieve the goal of the welfare program

If you're going to call for eliminating the program that's one thing, but half assing it is a waste of money, it's like buying a $150m fighter jet and then not buying the missiles because you're trying to be frugal
>>
>>7732618
First, protip if you highlight the text and then click the post number it will automatically quote the highlighted text for you.

Second, I wouldn't call giving out a shit-ton of money half assing it, but it doesn't have the effect of actually getting people back into work.
>>
>>7732626
>it doesn't have the effect of getting people back to work
That's an entirely different argument though. A program has to be evaluated on its ROI, but fucking with the numbers after it's been rolled out on a simplistic argument like 'lmao free money' is one of the reasons there's so much waste, it's like you small gubmint types are out to sabotage government so you can support your religious belief that corporate feudalism is the One True System

Also fuck your protips

Please put some skill points into reading comprehension.
>>
>>7732650

>>
>>7732662
food stamps is the best thing ever its like 1% of the federal budget but feeds 50 million people

and i buy clean water with it

i would be dead without foodstamps as a neet with social anxiety and with no money
>>
>>7732662
I was saying that people on benefits get too much.

It isn't like in america where they get redeemable foodstamps. Here you are given cash, paid into your bank account and it can be used for whatever you want.

If some shithead wants to go out and buy a load of drugs he can do that, the government and the taxpayers just have to hope that he is actually buying food and trying to get himself into work.

You think that i'm laughing at poor people so i'll give you a real life example, I know a couple who both work full time. One as a chef and the other as a secretary, the secretaries sister is on benefits and so is her husband.

The sister and her husband take home more money per year in benefits than the working couple.

It is disgraceful.
>>
>>7730928
because you could panhandle in the streets to supplement your income and make more than 29 bucks in a day.

I'm a single NEET and I get $194/mo for SNAP.

I'm able to buy pretty much whatever I want within reason.

My only complaint about the program isn't really a complaint: I think poor people would benefit a lot more if they could buy cookware/foil/saran wrap/tupperware... that kind of thing. It makes it a lot more difficult to eat cheaply if you don't have the ability to prepare many raw foods and/or store leftovers and unused portions.

I mean it's not that difficult to get cookware from yard sales/goodwill, but I think the money society gives people for food would stretch that much more if they could also buy the things they need to make stuff from scratch.

Where I live there are no "food stamps" - only SNAP. Not only that but not everyone gets the monthly $200. Some people only qualify for like $15 a month. Not even shitting you. Feel free to look up Oregon SNAP.

Also I think people who have kids get more than $200 a month but they could also be getting cash as well. I worked at a Safeway a few years ago and you can either only get the food stamp part, OR you can get a cash part as well. They give you a card much like debit card and it is preloaded every month with whatever you qualify for.
With food stamps you can only buy cold food.
With cash on your snap card you can buy cold and hot food.
Also with food stamps you can buy anything cold as long as it has nutrition facts on the back of it. (or somewhere on the package)

Good job being uninformed everyone.
Also this is only for Oregon I don't know about other places.

Those stores are probably accepting the cash part.
As for drug dealers - when you get SNAP they make you watch a video about all the things you're not supposed to do with your card and one of those things is selling your card for the value on the card or higher or for whatever sad reason.. lower... I'm sure you could just give someone your EBT card for a bag of meth or some shit. I dunno, I rarely buy drugs off the street cause I only smoke weed which is legal where I live.

Also doesn't Michigan have really lenient liquor laws anyway?

I don't really pay attention to the brands that much but I'm talking about shitty cheap jarred pasta sauce found in the pasta aisle. I also get like a pound of ground beef to cook in the sauce and then I buy various types of noodles, like sometimes I get bowties or I'll get shells.

Also here is another cheapo recipe that would last me a few days worth:

Dice up some potatoes, fry them up in a pan with some oil (maybe save a couple of buck and buy a big thing of olive oil? it's much better but also you can just use vegetable oil if you can't get enough money)
Then I get some cheese and queso (whatever the spiciest is cause I love that shit but you can get mild too it's good) and put that on top of the fried potatoes and then put some sour cream or greek plain yogurt.
Pic relate, I put eggs in there too sometimes.

CA fag here, I was only offered $20 a month in food since I was not crippled and I did not have a kid. For fucking $20 I would rather keep my dignity and not pull out a welfare nigger card when I pay for shit

you don`t work for minimun wage your entire life, ya dingus.
do min wage while in shcool and while studying to get by, get an internship which will get you a well paying job later.
It`s not hard, unless you make it hard
>>
>>7733222

classic poorfag defeatism. no wonder you are poor.
>>
>>7735936
There are only so many high-paying jobs available. even if everyone in the country had a degree they'd still need more toilet cleaners than executives.

Tbh if you're that poor you don't buy cilantro you fucking grow it from seeds, and you live mainly off pulses and grains. Frozen/canned veg and fruit when it's cheap.
>>
>>7733288
Poor people can buy leafy greens depending on how they manage, but no way someone on 29 bucks a week is simply going to buy 7 fucking limes for no goddamn reason

rice, cheap bulk meat, eggs, pasta or noodles, tortillas, lettuce, frozen veg, bag of apples.
its not glamorous but you can eat pretty healthily on a budget if you don't buy sugary crap

how hard is it to rotate a picture before shitposting, realy?
>>
why do people think the limes are so weird?

obviously they're going to be used for the juice to give some extra flavor to the otherwise bland things
there's 7 so you have one for every day of the week

notice how there is also things like tortillas, black beans and cilantro here all common ingredients in South American cuisine
funnily enough limes and their juice also happen to be a common ingredient in South American cuisine
there is also an avocado and lime juice is also used to make guacamole

not to mention vitamin C has an important place in any diet

honestly the thing I find most strange about this is the peas
they don't really go well with anything in this image at all and its not like they're the most filling food either

People can live off of very little variety. Think of the Inuit, who eat almost nothing but seal for most of the year. To really do poverty living
>rice
>beans
>forage for dandelion leaves
>raw whole carrots
>oil/lard for calories
You could probably survive off of that. I recommend the documentary "Living on a dollar a day" or something like that
>>
>>7736230

cause 1 lime is 45 eurocents here, huge waste of money if you're on a budget
>>
>>7736384
>inuit
Confirmed for knowing no Alaskans. Majority of Alaskan natives and Canadian First Nations north of the tree line prefer the term 'Eskimo' because Inuits aren't the only ethnicity in these areas.
I think Greenlanders are the only ones who prefer Inuit because there are no other Eskimo groups there, but I'm not sure because I've only met two and they were both Danised.

Over just being called Native, though?
I've been in southcentral all my life and I don't think I've ever heard anyone call a Native an Eskimo.

So if we took a microscope to your life you don't think they'll be one part where you got lucky or were at the right place at the right time? You think every single thing that happened to you is from just pulling up your sleeves and working? I don't doubt it's possible. But it's highly unlikely.
>>
>>7743665

I don't understand what that has to do with this? People have bad luck as well. If your answer is just sitting in self pity because life is hard, then good luck with that.

>why do people think the limes are so weird?
its weird because this is a WEEKS worth of food.

it could have been more rice and beans instead.
>>
>>7736230

Most places I've been too have a buy x for $y. So why is it odd to see multiple limes?

yeah dude peanut butter isn't native to canada, of course it's more expensive
>>

Not him but it is odd because she has limited resources and is wasting them of frivolous purchases.

An equivalent would be if you were fairly poor and you had $50 to decorate a room, so you went out and instead of buying some cheap paint and painting the entire room you bought enough to cover two walls and then spent the rest on stencils.

It is retarded to waste money like that when you don't have enough to get by.

I love reading posts like this, because it reminds me of just how much better at life I am than people like this.

I have a cushy office job where I work about 40 hours a week, and I still make plenty of time to cook every single day.

I haven't eaten fast food or restaurant food in at least 2 months at this point.

Cooking is fun. Just drink alcohol, put on some music, start experimenting with fundamentals.

rice, potatoes, beans (raw/dry to save even more), peanut butter, bread, some fruits, oil. 1$ per meal at 3 meals a day is easy, below that it's not exactly getting hard but certainly more dull
