Nothing tonight, I'm sick. Went up and visited pic related and Bent Paddle over the weekend though.
Thirsty Pagan had 2 sours I actually liked. One was aged in tequila barrels briefly, the other was some kettle red barrel aged thing that was even better. Didn't try the last sour because I had to drive and also had a couple of their standard beers.
Bent paddle has their cold press black ale on nitro and it's incredible. They also had a blueberry infused blonde that was even better.

question to anyone in the know about alcohol-related cirrhosis/liver damage:

is there a significant difference in the effects on the liver done by a 5% beer and a 4% beer?

it would seem like there shouldn't be, considering they're both still minuscule %'s of the beer consumed, yet there is also a noticeable difference in the inebriating effects of both

I am drinking this right now.

I wish I had a better picture but I don't, these guys, Transmitter, are still pretty small and I don't think you can even get their beer outside of NY or MAYBE CT, but they supply the place I work at and I am fairly certain they had a sales rep/brewer here one time giving out samples.

Anyway, the beer is pretty good, but a bit different from what I was expecting. I don't imagine many of you are into pu'erh tea, but this beer taste exactly like aged pu'erh tea, in beer form of course.

Earthy, hay, forest floor, barns, but also some peppery spice and also some frutiness in the way of maybe apricots or peaches or something.

Weird.

No, I love saisons, I also love sour beers, and I also love brett beers, and I have had a lot of them, this beer is unique in how much it tastes like the last pu'erh I was drinking. It also has a sort of smokey, bitter taste, which the last pu'erh I ha tasted like.

This falls in my favorite style of beer, I think I know what they generally taste like and when one of them taste slightly or a lot different.
>>
I can't find a beer I like. Every beer just tastes somewhere between 'kinda bad' and 'awful' to me.
Only once did I ever enjoy a beer, and that was about 6 years ago. It had a strong wheaty flavor and maybe some nuts, but I can't remember the name at all.
I've tried various "wheat beers" but none of them came close. Can someone recommend me a beer I might like? For the record I find IPAs disgusting and belgian ale to be not that bad.

>>
>>7239629

Well, wings are generally strongly seasoned so it seems like a pretty good match to me. If your beer is too "mild" then you have the exact same problem in reverse--the hot sauce on the wings would totally drown out the beer.
>>
Local place today for me lads. It's called Route 30 in Riverside, CA. It opened last Friday I think. They only have four beers so far but their pale ale is decent. I'm like 99% sure their cream stout is infected with something because it tastes like a cherry sour and not in a good sense. I feel sick.
>>
>>7239644
Agreed. I find that pale ales and IPAs go well with spicy Hispanic or Asian food.

You need to match your food/drink pairings. If you're eating spicy food then a strong beer will pair better.

I'm drinking Dirt Wolf tonight. It's a great double IPA (It's got more more pine flavor than fruit flavor, in my opinion) and I managed to buy some that was only bottled 3 weeks ago. I'd eat wings with it if I had them.

Southern Tier Warlock

Didn't realize how sketchy the picture was until uploading. Oh well.

It's good, but I don't love it as much as I probably should love a, "special," beer like this. First sips were probably too cold, and it mostly just tasted of soy and spice. The pumpkin is nice and present -- and aromatic -- now that I've let it come up a bit. Still just a little too sweet for me, without anything roasty or savory to balance it out.

Good, just not great. I feel like it's supposed to be great.
>>
>>7235851
I dunno if you get New Republic beer where you are but their Warimono is a pretty decent triple for like ~$9/bomber.
>>

Yeah, we have something called a World of Beer, and something called an Ale House, and a hotel down the street that talks about having 20-something taps.

Yet the locally-owned, not-very-classy video game bar that is literally just an empty store front someone bought and put a bunch of video games in to has the best beer selection by far.

Backwoods Bastard is incredible. I've only had it on draft, but it was completely incomparable to Dirty Bastard which is supposedly its base.

Here are a few beers I've loved recently:

Stone - Double Bastard
Cigar City Brewing - Jai Alai (tastes like half fruit juice and half ipa if you get it fresh)
Victory - Hop Devil
Ballast Point - The Commodore
Troegs - Nugget Nectar (Haven't had it recently, it's seasonal)
Bierbrouwerij De Koningshoeven - La Trappe Quad
Dogfish Head - Indian Brown Ale

Last night I had two beers from 21st Amendment Brewery. They were both called He Said, and they were both pumpkin beers. One was a tripel and the other was a baltic porter. The tripel was ok but the porter was the first beer I've ever poured down the drain, and I'm fine with Steel Reserve.

>>
My first bottle of the brand new Sierra Nevada Otra Vez is pretty delicious. I wonder how it will hold up as I drink more of them but my first impression is positive. It makes my mouth water like crazy with the salt and slight sour taste. I got a 6-pack of this and the Tropical IPA today so it will be a Sierra Nevada-heavy weekend.

I honestly don't understand the ratings it gets. Nothing spectacular, but it's rated as a solid beer. Did I get a bad batch? It actually tasted bad, not just not good. Like I said, I'm down with PBR, Steel Reserve, Mickey's, all sorts of mediocre beer, but this beer was off the charts terrible.

Had this tonight. It was weird as fuck.

I can usually sort beer as unpleasant, good, or forgettable. This didn't really fit as any. It wasn't bad, but I'll probably never drink it again, yet it also was very fucking memorable.

It was just so fruity. Not in the way a good wheat beer should be, more like a Tropicana juice blend. My mouth tastes like I just had something to drink with breakfast.

Just so fucking weird. And not at all what I picture when I think of winter flavors.
>>
>>7243926
I dunno, I'm all for putting my nose up at the ignorant masses but if beer is rated well and tastes outright bad you probably a bad batch.

>>
>>7246010
PBR and Lone Star and Stella and Heineken and Kirin and Sapporo and Yuengling and etc are maybe possibly arguably a slight minor step up from budweiser et al but the difference is extremely minor. The main asset they all have is excellent quality control and extreme precision, so you know exactly what you'll get. By contrast, some small-scale local breweries can produce legitimately undrinkable beer from time to time.

>Do tell how the Tropical IPA is, it sounds like that Jai Alai mentioned before.
The Sierra Nevada Tropical IPA was not what I expected. The average DIPA I've had tasted "fruitier" and what the Tropical IPA really smelled and tasted like was weed. As soon as I opened it it smelled almost like someone was smoking a bowl in the next room. It's pretty dark for an IPA too and it wasn't bad but the weed scent/taste was a surprise. I bought a 4-pack of Higher Math and a 4-pack of Fort when they were available in Delaware a few months ago. Fort was amazing and worth the price (you can only feasibly drink one in a sitting anyway) while the Higher Math was a little bit too much for me. HM was good but so rich and strong that I'd only enjoy it in specific situations. I bought another pack of HM though to age for at least a year since it will be better if it mellows and I think that it will. HM is also a one-time-only thing while Fort has been brewed before and will come back so you'll have more chances to try it.

It's good for a cheap beer, but if you're paying anymore for PBR than say Natty Light, it's probably not worth it.

I totally believe it's possible it was a bad batch. For example: I once had the Organic Chocolate Stout from Samuel Smith. It tasted like ass. But I have no reason to doubt ratebeer and other reviewers when they rave about it. The bottle was bad plain and simple.

The alcohol is no problem, as I'm not an alcoholic. The sugar and healthy food only, though... I'd love me a burger and soda. Or beer. But I crave soda more desu.

Had a lot of good beer recently.

I kind of went super heavy on the IPAs but I do love the style.

I had Victory Hop Ranch which I love and definitely recommend. It is very tropical and wet tasting, and the pilsner malt works great.

I had the Stone/Sierra Nevada colab NXS, which was surprisingly normal tasting with very minimal barrel character.

Then I had Sierra Nevada's Neomexicanus IPA which had very interesting mint and melon notes.

I also had both Sierra Nevada's new beers, Otra Vez and Tropical IPA. Both are good, though they should have called tropical IPA the DANK IPA because it literally smells like weed. Otra Vez is a good, unique gose, so easy to drink.

I also had Alpine Nelson which I had been waiting to try for a while, and it definitely showcases that tropical fruit and cat piss character of the Nelson Sauvin hop. The rye also gives it a nice, spicy character as well.

Miniature haul. Thank goodness for Total Wine's make-your-own six pack thing. The ones in the back are Sam Smith's Imperial Stout and Sam Smith's Taddy Porter which I haven't had before but have heard good things about them. Kitty decided to not be camera shy for once.

I'll probably never get the chance to try here down here in Southern California but "bourbon tones" sounds right up my alley.

>>7249877
Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout is really nice. Low-ish ABV and it tastes really darn good to boot. Another good one is Oatis from Ninkasi, it's criminally underrated and there's a vanilla version of it that's just as good.

>>7251790
IIRC, they've been bought out already. 1 billion dollars. Not that it's a problem, if anything the buy out might mean more beer distributed so everyone can enjoy it. Calm is definitely good, looks like a blonde drinks like a coffee stout. My personal favorite is their VaS, then again I think most people like that one a lot too.

The Duet isn't a 22, it's a 12. It's definitely good. Kind of wish I had gotten just a 6 pack of that instead!

you sound like a salesman, lol, but I agree. people get upset (where I am) when a local place gets bought out. but really, it just means more stringent regulation.

I've just seen the Duet in 22z, and it's a shelf turd. Most of our 22z are shelf turds.

Had my first Jai Alai yesterday, at a wedding from a keg. Surprising, since I'm like 30 minutes from their brewery, but I'm not an IPA person.

I could be if they were all this good. Still wouldn't ever pick it over most other common varieties, but it was the first IPA I've ever had where I wanted more.

Also had a Longboard from the bottle. It was just a little less plain than beer could possibly be. Slightly maltier than the typical pale lager, which made it slightly better than 100% forgettable.

I like beer, but I find hard liquors and wine to taste like shit.

Acquiring a taste for beer didn't take long. I don't like them all but I find barky Ales and Light Lagers to be my preferred area.

How do I acquire a taste for liquors and mixed drinks? I can't seem to make out taste past "wow it taste like how I imagine automobile fuel tastes, this taste like the most efficient way to become drunk without bothering to make it enjoyable to drink"

I only find them good as a way to get drunk in shots. Every thing from mixed drinks to jello shots feels like an attempt at disguising the fact that what you are drinking taste like diesel fuel.

I'm trying Bell's Cherry Stout tonight. I looked at reviews before buying and saw a lot of people complaining that it tasted like "cough syrup" so I bought a bottle to try but had doubts. I like your taste, anon. The Stone/SN collab sounded like it could be amazing from the description so it's a shame it came out the way it did. I'd love to see some beer with noticeable gin influence. It might not be good but I want to try it since I enjoy gin and beer separately.

I'm drinking Hop Devil tonight. It's a Victory beer. I've only ever had Golden Monkey from them, but this stuff is really good. It tastes kinda weedy to me for some reason. I was gonna get Dorado from Ballast Point because I knew the store had it, but it was old. I'm tired of fucking old beer, especially IPAs. Why is it not illegal? DURR BEER HAS ALCOHOL IT DOESNT GO BAD :) no it fucking doesn't for a long time but the taste still gets destroyed

What the fuck.
I'm drinking a Barley Johns Old 8 porter. If you live in WI or MN pick up a 4 pack. Great beer.

Been seeing a lot of Von Trapp in the stores lately, drinking the pilsner
It's from a Vermont brewery, and it's pretty good, super drinkable.
No idea what the availability is like, but we got it here in New Hampshire.
It's nice to see more craft lagers, I'm honestly kind of sick of super hoppy IPAs, it's been done a billion times.
