I'm thinking about going to a con with friends with a Dark souls related set. I'm sincerely not experienced with anything but i'm going to do the Engraved Gauntlets with foam or cardboard.

Any suggestions easy or medium difficulty sets that go well with the Engraved Gauntlets? I'm looking to make a simple longsword too.

And here's my pride and joy. Still need to repaint the mask bone-colored to match the suit better and figure out what I'm doing for gloves.

Considering bribing my little sister to wear this while I'm wearing Amelia, just because I selfishly want both cosplays to be in the photoshoot/meetup photos. Also trying to bribe 3 of my friends to be Shadows of Yharnam to walk around with me, I think it would be fun and easy as hell.

I think its a pretty good attempt, all things considered. Ornstein is an absurdly difficult set of armor to build that leaves almost no room for error if you want to get the proportions right. And you better be okay with a helmet that feels like another layer of skin.

saying curse words =/= mad, we're all adults here.

every other plain doll cosplayer uses a 100% different color for her scarf than her gloves (generally an incredibly bright pink, which is very jarring anyways), it's annoying, especially considering how obvious in-game that it's the same color.

You got your arm placement way off. The arm isn't the gold armor, its the black sleeve beneath it.

The Ornstein and the Priscilla seem to be of similar heights, too. So use that to compare where the head stops in the helmet.

I don't have any videos, but this guy's channel can help:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDSNezeW09U

This book was very helpful:
http://www.amazon.com/Techniques-Medieval-Armour-Reproduction-Century/dp/1581605366

None of my armor is hot worked; it's 18 or 16 gauge mild steel which is soft enough to be cold formed. My tools are mostly modified tools like hammers ground into different shapes or a large trailer ball hitch on a stake.
>>
>>9046486
Probably some play in how it's attached, or a weird angle. Armor attachment is always janky.
>>
>>9046839
Do you reckon I could use this technique for Catarina armor? Seems like it'd be pretty rough to get the right shapes. I'm using plastic card right now and pretty comfortable with it, but the idea of metal armor is definitely cool.
>>
>>9046847
>Catarina armor

Catarina armor would be a challenge because you're dealing with a lot of spherical / bowl shapes in the helmet and torso which are usually the most difficult shape to form out of sheet steel.

If I were making this, I would not attempt to make all the pieces out of single sheets. Instead, I would form many separate pieces and weld them all together. Almost like a pepkura model. The armor has along of vertical flutes which are great as welding seams.

The arms and legs could be done with normal armorsmithing techniques though.
>>
>>9046839

Could you possibly make your entire elite knight One Drive available? Your costume is by far the most complete, accurate, and well documented one to exist. Anyone who wants to attempt this costume would learn a lot from your work.
>>
>>9046868
Yeah, that's what I'm doing with the plasticard currently. I have a lot of miniatures experience, so with a heat gun and wood filler the helmet is pretty doable. Thanks for the input!

Patterns:
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=CD7767BA92B68BDA!8119&authkey=!AKx6y_0zN_--AYQ&ithint=folder%2ctxt

The patterns were developed in Adobe Illustrator. If you know how to use Illustrator, the patterns are easier to modify to fit your body. The Illustrator files also contain older development versions stored in separate layers.

Otherwise, I exported some .png files of the patterns with 1" x 1" square for sizing reference.

Is it even physically possible? That helmet looks really narrow. You might have to scale everything up to get proportions that work comfortably.

In fact, now that I look at it the whole set is weird. The waist is tiny and the legs are really skinny. It looks like you'd have to do some serious tweaking to get it to work, which is why >>9047654 looks a little weird. I wonder if the Dark Souls 3 design is more realistically scaled?

>>
>>9048298
>>9048298
>>9048298
i do not have any sewing or construction skills at all.

i'm willing to spend a lot so long as the prodcut is good. i'd much rather pay someone to do it right than struggle with it myself and end up with a finished project that isn't even that impressive.

however, i am willing to try to make some parts of some sets (such as making the gauntlets and grieves that would go on a bloodborne set after purchasing a victorian coat from an emporium) but that's because those are smaller, seem simpler and aren't required to be metal
>>
>>9048311

Alright.

Large parts of the costume you can find close equivalents online, either on Etsy or MedeivalCollectibles.

The two big questions are the helmet and the tabard.

The helmet you can approximate with a Tudor Close Helm, but its not exact. Thats what I have, but I am actually planning on replacing the visor of that with a home made one to be more accurate, so take that as you will.
The other option there is to try and find someone to commission a more accurate Elite Knight helmet. That wont be cheap, but the Tudor Close helm is about $200 anyway so it cant hurt to poke around and get an estimate from someone on Etsy or whatever.

The Tabard you just have to find someone to make it for you, though. I got a friend who does costume design for a theater to make mine for me. Its the one piece of the costume that you really can't fake with something else, because nothing you can buy off the shelf looks like it.

Once you have solutions to those two problems, then you can think about the rest of the armor set. Because without an answer to those two, you don't have an Elite Knight. Just some armor.

If you look hard enough, you can find fabric trim out there that is good enough to pass for the costume, and it will look better than paint or gold leaf.

As for the center panel, it might be worth your time to find someone or someplace that has a computer embroidery machine. I was able to do this pattern at a local makerspace.

>what fabric did you use?
I used a polyester tarp-like fabric from Jo-Ann's that was originally intended for outside lawn furniture upholstery.

>also, what do you plan on wearing under you chainmail?
I wear a t-shirt, then a tight fitting padded vest that only covers the top half of my chest. The picture shows the vest, but before I cut the bottom half off. I cut it off because it was way too hot.

The padded vest is there to support the weight of the armor and chain mail upon my shoulders. The padding on the arms are probably important because there is so much movement and there would be chaffing. Otherwise, I have no discomfort from the chain mail against the t-shirt against my skin.

I think you should stay away from the gambeson unless it's fitted very well to your body. However, you're still going to need some padding on the top of your shoulders at the very least. You could sew some of the Jo-Ann's quilted solids onto the shoulders of an old shirt. For the sleeves, you could sew a second layer of shirt sleeve over the first one.

i'll be sure to look into the padding.
my biggest concern is making sure i don't look out of proportion kinda like the guy here.
in this case it may have been the fact that the pauldron he used on his right shoulder is bigger than the one in the actual game. it's still something i want to keep an eye on though.
>>
>>9052287

Not who you are talking to, but for my elite knight cosplay, my chain was only aluminum. I got away for a while with just a thin long sleeved grey shirt underneath it all. The chainmail feels like you are wearing a wet sweater at first, but your body adjusts and after a little bit you kind of forget its there.

I only recently invested in extra padding, in the form of an Arthur Padded Collar from medeivalcollectibles, which provides some extra support for my shoulders but I mostly got because my helmet kept rubbing on the back of my neck and it was irritating the crap out of me. The chainmail support was just a side bonus.

Again, this is for ALUMINUM chain. Steel is going to be 3x the weight, so padding will be much more important if you go that route.

If you get padding, your entire costume better take that extra girth into account or nothing will fit right, or in some cases at all, on top of it.

>>
>>9052317
i gotcha. i'll be sure to get the chainmail (and maybe padding) first.

you wouldn't happen to have a link to the chainmail you own do you? that is, of course, if you got it online.
>>
>>9052516

I got my chainmail on ebay. Just search for aluminum chain shirt on ebay and you should get a bunch of hits for cheap. Its not just people selling out of their garage, actual sellers from overseas sell on Ebay too.

Just make sure you get something in the right size. When it doubt, always go one or two sizes larger than you think you need.

Be forewarned: aluminum is not as strong as steel. the first couple of things you wear it, rings are going to fall off of it as your body 'stretches' the chain and the areas of greatest strain lose their weakest links. Eventually, this situation will stabilize, though the end result may mean some holes in your chainmail cover, such as under the armpits.

Working on the Gold Hemmed Set (Daughters of Chaos armor) and Quelaag's Furysword.

1 month to go and I'm lagging behind.

A color ID on the fabric would be nice. I'm thinking of using a charcoal linen and dying some parts black and others blue.
>>
>>9051339
How much did the embroidery cost?
>>
>>9053058
Looks like it'll be a fun project. Does it look to anyone else like the layer around the waist is almost lavender-tinged?
>>
>>9053266
Thanks. I agree on the midsection.

While I'm at it, any ideas on how to paint/stain the furysword? It's made of wood and I'm not sure how to get the dynamic colors (browns/blacks/blues) or the shine.
>>
>>9053376
Perfect, something I can actually help with! For the wood, you're going to want to sand it as smooth as you can, then prime it to stop the paint from being absorbed. For the weird highlights, in general if you want smooth gradients like that over a large surface you're pretty much limited to airbrushing it on. For the shine, you're going to want a gloss sealant, and just paint it on normally.

How committed are you to the wooden furysword? That sounds heavy and uncomfortable as hell.
>>
>>9053388
Typically I do all of my sanding before priming/painting but I noticed the more I layer colors, the more grainy it becomes. I met someone at a con once who had a near perfectly smooth wood sword and he said he sanded between layers, but when I tried this on scrap wood it smeared the colors together. Do you have any experience with this?

I considered switching to foam since I'm having trouble removing wood on that large of a scale. I have all the parts cut and fitted now, but they're blocky.

I'm committed now though, I expect it to lose 1/3rd of its weight when I'm through sculpting and that's enough.
>>
>>9053422
I've seen people do multiple layers of primer, sanding inbetween, which is essentially using the primer as a gap filler. I've never tried it myself, but I would imagine that's what he meant. What do you mean by grainy?
>>
>>9053427
If the spray paint was caked too thick it left a rough granular texture (despite the wood beneath being smooth).

Using the primer that way makes better sense, thanks again.
>>
To the people that are making wood swords I have a question.

Doesn't it get uncomfortable thought the con? Also how do you guys carry your stuff? Do you bring a backpack or phanypack? I always go to con alone and it sucks cosplaying in armor while having a backpack how do you guys do it?
>>
>>9053449

>>9053449
Most wood swords (including DS ones) will be light, because normal steel blades are very thin. Only thick fantasy swords cause issues.

For carrying small items make interior pockets or find other characters from the same universe that have bags. It might not be accurate to your character but it won't juxtapose as much as a modern bag.

Lastly dump stuff in the hotel room often.
>>
>>9053996
Never got a hotel room before, how early do I have to book a room. How does it work if you don't mind me asking. Since all the cons I attended to was close to home and drive able.
>>
>>9053069
It was $90 for a month of membership, and $40 for the class to learn how to use the machine. However, the $90 also gave me access to their sewing machines and hammer / anvils to make the armor.

Makerspaces are perfect places for cosplayers to make their costumes; I'm surprised they aren't talked or known about more. All the cosplayers that have used my location have won awards at large conventions.
>>
>>9054046
Book one when you know you'll attend a con. Hotels generally allow you to defer payment until after you've arrived anyways.

Just call and tell them their will only be one occupant (even if you end up splitting the room with others).
>>
>>9054155
>access to their sewing machines and hammer / anvils

I've been thinking of cosplaying Lady Maria, Plain Doll, or DS3 firekeeper (I've thought about a lot of them, just haven't decided). Even though this shouldn't be too much of an issue, it still bothers me. I'm pretty tan and SoulsBorne waifus are pretty pale or covered completely in armor, wear a mask, etc. Should I bite the bullet and cosplay whoever despite my skin color? I find that a lot of blondes don't really suit me that well. Some of them look okay, but it's pretty hard to find something that looks alright on me, especially the paler blondes.

Enough of my ranting. Any cosplay recommendations? I'm starting to lean towards masked character like Ciaran or Eileen since my Asian face probably wouldn't suit anyone.

I know at least for the doll and Maria, their skin tone is that way for a reason. Firekeeper I don't think it would matter. But honesty who cares do whatever you want.

there are quite a few sets i would like to pull off.
I'd want to pull off a really good soliare. it seems like the easiest and least expensive to do yet i've never seen someone pull it off well enough. Shoulders seem off or tabard is out of proportions. would be nice to do it right.

Lautrec would also be cool because I love his helmet and chest piece design in particular. However this would take a lot of work and I'm not sure i have the skill to do it myself.

I'd also like to do the elite knight set and am working on one right now actually. Only "problem" with that is that a lot of people do it already and they do it really well.

The two sets that are tied for my dream cosplay are alva's set and the forosian set. You rarely see a forosian knight and i dont thibnk i've ever seen an alva cosplayer. I love the colors and designs on both and think i could make them if i really tried hard enough.

That face is awful, but the rest of the armor is relatively clean. I'd say it could be salvaged.

Hey guys, I'd like to make a Solaire cosplay and I was wondering if you guys had any tips to make it like what materials to use and etc.
>>
>>9056884
That's what I thought. Dark Souls is one of his favorite series and he said if he ever cosplayed from it, that's what he'd cosplay. Either that or try and convince our other roommate to do Ornstein and Smough.

>>9057105
Any pictures of the cosplay? Unless I'm stupid and misunderstanding.

Does anybody know any online embroidery places? Where I can send it in and they do the design lol.
>>
>>9057924
no pictures yet, unfortunately. I'm just working on getting the proportions right, which is surprisingly difficult.

You could get a bucket helm for a pretty good price anywhere, but it wouldn't be strictly accurate to his model. Mail is self-explanatory, I'd get aluminum or even pvc for a con because of weight concerns. The green on the shoulders is the tough part; maybe faux fur if you can find some in green that doesnt look shitty?

Share them here when you get them! Would love to see that.

Me too! Making it for my boyfriend.
Yours is looking really great, specially the detailing in the chest piece.

Do you have any clue as to his scarf thingy shape? I wanted to start on its embroidery but I'm confused about the shape and how it would be tied.

To much work, maybe without the shield

Compared to the helmet and the hammer, the shield is cake.

Thanks, but unfortunately I haven't thought that far ahead yet, as I'm still working on the foam parts. However, I just have his hip parts and the legs to go so I should be working on it soon. I'll post some pics when I get there

I don't know how to do the sun print. If I was doing this, I would figure out how they would've done this stuff back then and try to copy that process. There's really only two ways to get pictures on fabric; embroidery or dyeing / painting. Solaire's tunic looks more like a dyeing / painting process instead of an embroidery process like on the Elite Knight's tunic.

For the fabric, use something that has large loose weave like burlap or muslin. Tight weave fabrics are too modern and look out of place on a knight.

The tunic should probably be made out of 2 or 3 layers of whatever fabric you choose. This gives the fabric weight which is important. If you look at the bottom edges of the tunic, you can even see that Solaire's tunic is at least two layers of fabric.

I don't know how to weather / damage the fabric threads directly and get the tears along the bottom edges, but for surface weathering you could just roll around in some dry dirt.
