>Who's your old school inspiration/idol?

>What is it that draws you to old school?
>Do you have a specific favorite old school coord? If so, what is it you like so much about it?

Black shoes and a non-black coordinate can have a certain charm to it, giving an Alice in Wonderland feel. Black stompy boots do not.
>>
>>8986208
I always assumed she couldn't because of how much they cost. Can't wear lolita everyday when you can only afford a few pieces here and there
>>
>>8986291
I originally assumed they were handmade, and that theory would make sense, but it's wrong. A lot of the frumpy shit is Jane Marple (if I remember correctly), and some is VW and Meta. Some are also Baby pieces. I think it's a comfort and practicality in the heat thing moreso than a cost one.

>What kind of coords are you planning?
At the moment I'm trying to figure out oldschool classic, but it's hard. Half the style literally hasn't changed at all, and some of the parts that are different go against my instincts of taste. The bit I'm struggling with most is the shoes - most of the classic coords I see that don't go for something too odd like huge stompy goth boots or super sweet boots use some kind of very plain white/brown/black low-heeled Mary Jane that doesn't really look like a typical lolita brand shoe and I'm really struggling to find similar shoes offbrand. Platforms are around too, but I'm terrible at walking in them for long periods. RHS seem to be fine as well but there's a RHS shortage in my size at the moment. I'm also struggling to reconcile having a lot of beige items with using white shoes.

I might try to get some boots like pic related, since they still work for modern styles.
>>
>>8986159
Quite like the girl next to her in sportswear.

>>8986171
One of the few examples I've seen of calf-high socks looking good.

>>8986187
I'm confused by what the ridiculous space shit next to it is. Some sort of raver thing, or a cosplay thing?

>>8986198
Misako is damn cute in BtSSB there. Also coloured shoes represent.

>>8986231
Very cute on the right there! Feels like it could be a modern otome coord or some Jane Marple stuff.

>>8986247
>The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I was just thinking this recently with bat collars coming back in. A lot of people seem to think they're a modern gothic trend, but they're absolutely not, as seen in >>8986254.

>>8986272
Cute.
>>
Looking at this reminds me of how much I HATE old school Lolita. Though I agree that some of the stuff today is way too OTT but all of these dresses just look gross and tacky
>>
>>8986592
Maybe you should move along to the next thread, then? No sense in raising your blood pressure from people enjoying things you don't like.
>>
>>8986592
>tacky
>understated

Switching to Kera 46, July 2002

The theme is "sexy and mighty girls" (mostly seems to be a highlight of celebs) and the beauty comic is about pedicure and some sort of permanent or semi permanent eyelash curling? Not nearly as weird or as horrifying as some of the weight loss ones.

It's a lot to scan and it makes it feel less tedious when I can share it with people. This seems to be one of the few places where there seem to be people who are regularly interested in old school stuff so... I figured why not?

Scans of most of kera aren't available, so most of it is probably going to be new content unless it's an advert that was used in multiple issues or also used in the GLB.

oh, no, you are totally right. the print I was thinking of wasn't even out then, it's a 2006 release. ugh. I'm so off my game today. I was convinced I was seeing swords in there.

Well, this is just re-enforcing the "I really should not try to make lolibrary entries for any of this today" idea I was having earlier....

Ok, Kera issue 32, from May 2001, not 1999... that would be a much lower date. A+ on the reading skills for me right now, sorry.

(the spines of a lot of the issues have some 1999 date, I have no idea what it signifies as the magazine started in 1998)

I have a sailor-collar blouse, a hime-sleeved blouse and a pair of black RHS in the mail but Golden Week has delayed their arrival.

>What kind if coords are you planning?
I'm trying to figure out ways to wear the same piece multiple ways. You'd think the more relaxed attitude to matching in oldschool would make the process of coordination easier, but it doesn't - I get way too stressed about whether the accessories I'm using are "oldschool enough".

Such a nice coord. Can't help but notice how many of them were named 'Alice' in these old snaps, also the fact that 14 y/os were using Vivienne Westwood already!??

Sorry for the multiple replies, working my way up the thread. Baby had a single colour Bambi and Alice print before going full colour, I believe this is part of that print?

I guess it's a mixture of second-hand, saving, and parents money? If I really wanted to I could have bought VW at 14 and my family weren't rich and I didn't get an allowance. I would have had to save my lunch money and birthday money for like a year though instead of spending it on sweets and CDs...

It should be a sin to act this new anon. If you can't even appreciate the core aesthetics of what made Lolita in the first place then find another fashion.

They are pretty old; I've got them at least as old as 01/2001 on a timeline in one of my books.

Pretty is 1979
Heart E and Algonquins are 1987
Baby is 1988
Putumayo is 1990
Meta is 1993
Miho Matsuda and Marble are 1996
Visible is 1997
Victorian Maiden and Moi Meme Moitie are 1999

>>8989235
A lot of the oldschool girls seem to be more frumpy and plain; I'm not sure if it's just a case of it being so rare a style that there aren't a lot of very pretty people to push those girls into the background or what.

"Some covers from Olive magazine in the mid 1980s, one of the first magazines to feature lolita style clothing, and one of the biggest influences on the early evolution of the fashion. The term “lolita” was coined around this time, but “Olive girl” was still more common."
From apple-hime on tumblr.

Imagine if "olive girl" stuck around. Tbh it's waaay better than "lolita".

It's possible.

I think part of it had to with the makeup aesthetic of the time. 90s makeup was pretty heavy and made people look really mature, but unless you were going for gothic lolita, lolitas then wanted to focus on youthfulness, so wearing makeup was pretty minimal, if none were worn at all.

this is primarily a knitting book, and it was published in 1985. So this is around the time Isobe was working there. So it's likely this had some influence on early Baby.

This model is featured in a handful of photos I'm skipping because they aren't remotely related to lolita or lolita print themes, but I want to mention it because it's super cool that she's featured in here and in so many photos.

Actually, in hindsight, IDK if this chick is white or not. I thought she wasn't, but it might just be the lighting and a perm, which is lame if that's all it is.

Ok, so part of the reason this is relevant, is the BTSSB timeline in the baby mook that came with that cheap black heart bag says this for 1988:
東京都渋谷区にて婦人服製造卸会社を設立
Established a women's clothing manufacturing wholesale company in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo

It doesn't actually say it's lolita, nor that it's specifically called baby.

Later, in 1992, it says 正式にBABY, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT としてブランドをスタートさせる (Officially BABY,THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT starts as a brand).

which means 1980s baby, might not be labeled Baby and it probably is closer to what we see in his 80s work prior to Baby than what we see in the late 90s work.

I notice back in the days this fashion cared way less about people's appearance. It was mainly about the fashion and the clothing, less about looking necessarily beautiful but more about coordinating and making it work for you. What a shame lolita became like mainstream fashion that prioritizes being in a beauty norm.

While Pretty has has shops since 1979, they weren't specifically manufacturing lolita.

This is who they carried in 2004.

A lot of what we consider to be lolita brands weren't around in the 80s, or they weren't selling their own things under their own names.

I feel like I'm not explaining all this well, but basically, when you start chasing established lolita brands back to the 80s, almost everything dead ends. We can get a general idea of what these particular brands might have been doing, though..

And there was clearly /someting/ before AP and Baby... but as far as "Lolita" in the 1980s goes... we are talking totally different brands than we are for the late 90s -> forward.

Pre 90s, it's going to be MILK and Pink House, and ETC and JM, and brands which are considered Otome today, or to fall into other fashion styles entirely.

And it's too old for the wayback machine. So I hope once I get the Olive issues I have in the mail I can give you a little 80s proto-lolita, but without hard copies of magazines from the 80s, this is the best I can really offer for now.

And since we are talking proto-lolita brands, here is a Betty's Blue dress from the late 90s which would totally fit in with a modern JetJ collection.

She looks mixed to me though I've seen white people with properly curly hair.I'm 1/4 white and my hair is a similar but slightly looser texture, but I do hope they didn't just get a white girl and perm her hair to look 'exotic' without having to actually hire a mutt.
