I was able to complete my first bag today! I went with a knockoff WEGO because I'm taking a trip to Japan this year and figured I'd find something nicer to upgrade to at that time. This was all I could fit on and I'm pretty content.
>>
>>8956811
I love what you did for the "background". Did you get faric custom printed and attached to something like a cork board? My crappy engrish isn't allowing me to better explain what I mean, sorry!
Even thought it doesn't have a lot of items like most itabags, I think yours works really well, super cute. Have fun in Japan!
>>
>>8956822

>>8956822

Thanks! I was surprised to see that there wasn't a real "background" piece/pocket attached to the heart, so I just doubled up two pieces of purple craft foam and used that as the background. It's pinned to the inside of the bag.

The image of Iwatooshi's clothes is actually a clear file attached with a bit of sticky-tac! Some clear tape would work too, I just didn't want it to get the clear file too sticky if I needed to take it off later.

Thanks so much! I went last year and only learned about itabags a few days before we left, so this time around I'll be on the lookout for tons of merch and bags!
>>
>>8956846
Oh, wow! I wouldn't have guessed it was file case haha. It worked pretty well! Thank you so much for your answer, I got the same knockoff bag in black and I've been picking up ideas from others who've put a background on theirs, so I can try making one for mine.

Aww! I'm glad you have the chance to return there, I hope you find loads of goodies!
>>
>>8956854

Yeah, I remembered hearing things about fabric boards and such being used in these, I just went with craft foam because I have a lot laying around from cosplay, and I think the flexibility is good since the bag is soft and will rumble around a lot. You could also easily glue fabric to it if you wanted a patterned or different colored background. I just left mine bare and it's not noticeable.

Plus, you can pin things right to the craft foam! The kind I used isn't too thick, even when doubled, so my pins were able to go in and out and still close without bulging or getting bent. We'll see how it holds up in terms of actually using the bag!
>>
Kakyoin anon from the last thread. I placed my order for the black WEGO bag today, and Amiami should be shipping this out to me soon! Besides this I'm probably gonna get some buttons from Artsmoo, a few keychains I found on Storenvy, and possibly reordering the plush keychain. (I know I has one of the plush keychains before, but I think he fell off the bag I had him on so I have to deep clean my room to see if I can find him)
>>
>>8956811
Awesome bag! But i'd watch the placement of the "i love naginata" badge because one of your rubber straps is slightly covering it and it looks like "i love vaginat"
>>
>>8956590
So painful, anon. I wish it's taken with better light so I can see the sparkles clearer but it looks good so far.

finished my first itabag last night! i totally underestimated how much work goes into pinning badges. i might fix it some day but for now i'm happy enough!
>>
>>8956846
how do you find pinning your background to the inside of your bag? I recently got a heart bag and made a custom background as well, but feel kind of paranoid the pins will start yanking on or damaging the fabric after a while. . .

also your idea of using craft foam as a hard backing is a really good idea, I might try backing the fabric I'm using with some to stop it wrinkling a little.
>>

This guy is selling sets of stuff, considering getting the one of my husbando, Makoto, but it seems very expensive for what's in it.
>>
>>8957909
The prices seem like they meet the rrp for all the items together but I wouldn't call it a bargain. You can find cheaper bulk lots for auction sometimes on yahoo auctions
>>
Has anyone ever compared original wego heart bags with the taobao copy? Or is there anything workmanship wise that stood out in the knock off version? They cost roughly the same so i was thinking of just getting the original but i don't know if i'm patient enough to wait till next month lol.
>>
>>8957814
Looking really good! I love how you layered the badges.
>>
>>8957995
I remember someone saying in the last thread, that their knock-off bag's handles were slightly off centered, also the knock-offs don't have the backing like the genuine ones do. That's all I've heard, I don't own either of the bags myself, so this is all what I've heard from others
>>
Does anyone have a good tutorial for making a clear vinyl bag? I ordered the perfect base bag (pictured), and since I'm very comfortable with sewing, i think making my own cover would be a good place to save a little money on this

>>

I made a clear cover for my bag by using the bag as a pattern and then just sewing it together to form a pouch, and attaching it with a few snap fasteners, so I can remove the cover as I want to. But my bag was just a tote, so it might be a bit more difficult with your bag.. Though you said you're comfortable with sewing, so maybe you could make it work?

I'm curious, those of you who have bags for more popular characters - what factor makes you decide what to buy for your bag merch? Strictly official items? Fan art that looks like the official art? Unique stuff?
>>
>>8958625
I do both fanart and official merch and I tend to only buy merch I like instead of going, "I must get everything of x character." Saves me some money that way.
>>
>>8958625
i buy most of the official stuff, but i only use my favorite series/themes on my bags. my husbando had a donut series a while back, so i poured all my money into getting enough for my bag and shrine.
>>
Is there some trick to pinning larger badges to small areas? I'm having a stupidly difficult time just trying to pin a row of badges neatly...
>>
>>8958859
Maybe get some marking chalk and draw out a line along with even space dots to mark where the pins go in and out? Just an idea haven't tried it.

Yeah, that might work for thinner fabric but I think the problem I have is just it's pretty thick fabric in a small space.

I'm currently in Tokyo right now and I'm looking for shops that sell base bags primarily made for itabags. I was in Akihabara and Ikebukuro, but I've only saw some sold in a shop in Tokyo Station, but unfortunately not in the color I wanted. Does anyone know any specific shops they'd be sold out?
>>

>>
>>8960508

Yes. This shit is too expensive to use once or twice a year.
>>
>>8960569
Don't you ever feel embarassed?
>>
>>8960508
I do, but only one side is decorated.
I wear the decorated side inside towards my body depending on where I am.
>>
>>8960574
No one's even going to look that hard at you or your bag. I understand being self-conscious but it's like wearing j-fash out in general, if you act like a normal human being it'll be fine.
>>
>>8960508
Only if I'm feel particularly confident that day.
I got over "hiding your power level" once I finished high school. (Of course anime still has its geeky stigma.)
If you're spending 100+++ dollars on something you like, go ahead and do whatever you want with it.
>>
>>8960574
no? I don't see how it's any different from going out decked all in normie brand or wearing diamond jewelry on a daily basis. people honestly generally don't tend to give a fuck what people are wearing unless they're insecure themselves, in which case they are weak and can be ignored
>>
>>8960642

>>

I'm really tempted to make a full outfit honestly! I need a new swimsuit and I know Artsmoo does them, and I was trying to think of something I could do to incorporate Kakyoin into that.

>>8960706
Nice to see a lot of gulls are going to be at the Chicago expo. Chances are I'll have my Kakyoin bag there too, if it's allowed!
>>
>>8960569
Hell no. I spent too much money and made my bag look too good to get embarrassed/care about strangers' opinions.
>>
>>8960665
?????
how can you possible think caring what random strangers think about you is less insecure than not caring at all?
>>
>>8960911
Not that anon but I don't think they're exactly making that comparison. Most people do actually care what others are wearing if they take notice no matter how they feel about themselves so someone might be a bit naive to think that they don't. You see people get judged for their clothes and hobbies every day.
>>
>>8959310
I'm thinking of getting the purple knockoff wego bag for it and I'm hoping to get at least one of these plushies to go with it.

So I know that there was an anon here that was working on a hakuouki itabag but didn't like the bag itself. There is some purses that now exist for each of the characters. It seems that the preorder is until the 17th, and it'll be shipped off sometime in August.

So is there such a thing as going too far with collecting just a single character's merch? I've officially ordered my 2nd bag (and my first wego bag!) for upcoming merch because my tote is too full and even then i feel like the wego bag is just going to fill right up (i already have a bunch of leftover merch in hand not including preorders)! Although with a tote and a backpack i guess i can carry both around during cons.

Also i found this on twitter. Itaphonecases anyone?

Also I might as well say what my opinion is when it comes to whether or not to shell out the extra dough for the legit bag or not.
I enjoy the legit bag a lot more desu; it's construction on the inside is more solid and is more aesthetically pleasing to me.
That being said, its zipper is pretty shit. I've had it go wonky on me several times and it's frustrating. The knockoff's zipper seems a lot more sturdy.
There's also the fact that the legit bags sell out really quickly and if you want one, you usually have to be quick and/or preorder one which takes a while.
If you're ok waiting a while for a mostly-quality bag, go with the legit version.
If you don't want to wait and are ok with glitter and an inferior quality bag, go with the knockoff.

Oh man, if I didn't already complete my Verde itabag this would've been perfect for him since he's the lightning arcobaleno.

I started a Choromatsu itabag complete with lightsticks (there's a lot more pins and keychains I haven't attached and I'm not set on their positions yet), and I'm making another bag dedicated towards scientist/teacher characters in general since they're always my favorites!

The latter I don't have a bag for yet and just have random bits of merch together on a spare bag. I think I'll be using a black wego backpack for that one, but I'm not sold on it yet.

I'd been doing this for years and everyone in the west used to say it was weebshit. Now there's a Japanese term for the phenomena, it's suddenly acceptable among western fans.

Isn't it weird that you see most of these in Ikebukuro yet in Tokyo the only Animate that has DIY itabag supplies is Shibuya?
>>
Where would one begin with making an ita outfit? Cosplay?
>>
I haven't seen too many well composed Karamatsu bags... /r/ing those, please!
>>
>>8966292
Depends- I really like the look of cosplaying a character wearing an ita outfit, but it doesn't work for everything. Something like Love Live, Osomatsu, things that have a casual but iconic look due to wigs/makeup suit it. Characters with more extreme or detailed designs don't work so well with an ita outfit.

I would reccomend picking some base items to start attaching stuff to- Kimono style jackets/windbreakers etc. are popular for ita outfits as they're big and plain, like a wearable canvas. Just find things that suit the colour scheme you want or go for a base colour like black or white, and attach badges/straps etc. on top.
>>
>>8966292
I am personally in the camp of collage clothing of the character like Pearl anon, Handsome Jack anon, or I think one of the Jojo anons. You also bag character color j-fashion outfits (like I think a Free! anon has) and cosplay.
>>
>>8966269
>everyone in the west used to say it was weebshit.
Except everyone that's discussed the trend that was popular up until what, 2010 at the most? said that it was just a ton of button badges from Artist Alleys slapped onto a bag with no pattern or theme aside from "teen weeb pride"

I think it catching on here in the West is all of us (for the most part) being adults now that see this as 50% nostalgia for what we used to do with button bags and 50% love for a character/series. This isn't a bag made from 3 for $1 buttons you'd pick up from artist tables back in the day, it takes a lot of disposable cash and creativity because unlike the bags of our weeb pasts, these are created to be artistic.

I don't know about you but I've never bought anything from artist alleys because gacha machines are just fine for buttons, especially the 100 yen doujin ones in toranoana.

> it takes a lot of disposable cash and creativity because unlike the bags of our weeb pasts, these are created to be artistic.

No they aren't. You're only looking at the impressive ones in this thread and even then they're not really 'artistic' unless you created the straps/buttons yourself. Most people walking around with them just put them on any old way.

I think the issue here is that you're only seeing a small representation of these bags that are being posted on blogs - the ones people are taking pictures of because they're particularly impressive. Ita bags don't have to be 'artistic' to be ita bags, just like itasha doesn't have to be artistic. Maybe you don't understand the 'ita' part of this.
>>
>>8966587
>never bought anything from artist alleys because gacha machines are just fine for buttons

What in the world are you talking about? That isn't Western at all and you specifically were talking about the West.
>>
>>8966587
Uh yeah most people in this thread don't live in Japan, Pauline.

In the US AA buttons have usually been the only cheap source of character buttons until recently and even now the stores that import goods will still charge $8+ for a blind badge pack.
>>
>>8966658
>That isn't Western at all

Yeah but what you're saying is that itabags didn't exist until recently, which is untrue. Just because you had a bag with a few badges on doesn't mean everyone else did. I had an itabag in 2008, but back then to have that many badges and charms on your bag was considered way too weebish.
>>
>>8966677
But I didn't say that at all?
Reread my >>8966500 post where I specifically said "the trend was popular up until around 2010" which implied 'itabags' in its most basic form has been around in the West for a long time but what it was before is not what it is now.

>I had an itabag in 2008
And so did everyone else who was a teenaged anime fan back then.

Frankly the only point you seem to be hammering home in all your replies (and especially your first post) is how hipster you are and how no one recognized you for being cool and ahead of your time for something's that's becoming trendy again in a modern evolution nearly 10 years later.
>>

>but what it was before is not what it is now.

It was though, you're just comparing your Invader Zim Death Note bag to what some people used to carry around - which were no different from what you see in this thread. The only difference is that before now you were the type of person who would have considered it weebish and uncool, but now you're seeing it on popular blogs you like it and want to emulate it.

>>8966500
>"teen weeb pride"

Give it a few years for everybody to be wearing these bags at conventions and you'll decide it's not cool anymore again. You're the real hipster here; you'll like something when it's popular in Japan but the moment every western anime fan is doing it you'll decry it as weaboo shit - what could be more 'weaboo' than that?

You're the real hipster here, the only difference is that you're slower on the uptake and you'll use 'hipster' as a dirty word to throw at anyone who was at the mark before you - back when you looked down on those people who liked the thing you like now.

Button Lady is kind of the epitome of what Western Itabags were like in the early 2000s before they were called itabags. Just a bunch of random fandom buttons on one bag, usually up and down the straps too, typically with a black Naruto or Bleach shirt. Bonus points if Tripp pants.

>>8966696

Itabags are like that now, the only difference is that you're seeing the ones that people bother to take pictures of, IE: That are interesting because they're of one character or pairing. It's not like it's a rule of itabags that they have to be of one character or that they have to be laid out in a certain way.

Okay, what? That bag I posted with like.. five different animes on it is no different than ANY of the itabags posted here? The only difference is that my Japanophile obsessed brain sees it as inferior because a Japanese girl isn't toting it.

Alrighty then. Glad to know a $0.15 "SEMES MAKE ME SQUEAL" and "NORMIES SCARE ME" badge set is the same as $25 worth of husbando merch.

>a few years for everybody to be wearing these bags at conventions and you'll decide it's not cool anymore again
Actually I'd be thrilled because I could actually attend itabag meets and swap merch with people? I mean, how fucking cool would that be? Also button bags started out being created BY Western convention goers so... I dunno where you're going with that but no one but you seems to be denying that.

But hey, what do I know since I wasn't the one complaining about how I've been doing this for years and yet got called a weeb for it. Hate to tell you but the moment you wear an itabag to a convention, you're still going to be a weeb and the only one that doesn't seem to get that is you.

Button bags = teen weebs spending $5 on a handful of buttons

Itabags = adult weebs spending $50 on a couple pieces of imported merch

No, what I'm saying is that this:

>Alrighty then. Glad to know a $0.15 "SEMES MAKE ME SQUEAL" and "NORMIES SCARE ME" badge set is the same as $25 worth of husbando merch.

Is not representative of everyone with a backpack that has anime stuff on it. There are lots of people that had what you would consider to be 'ita bags' nowadays - straps and buttons have always been available on amiami/HLJ etc. The difference is that back then it was uncool and weebish, now it's suddenly acceptable.

I don't go around sneaking pictures of people's bags, that's kind of creepy.

>because on all the interviews and blogs I have seen they have been described as specific to one show/character/pairing.

Of course you do, because that's what makes it bloggable/TV-worthy in the first place. Walk around otome road/downtown ikebukuro and you'll see plenty of girls with mixed-character/series bags and they are very much itabags. I've seen some which have countless series and others which are 50/50 split. EG one that comes to mind I saw recently: N from Pokemon on one half and Makashima from Yowapeda on the other half, both respective side's handles were weighed down by multiple charms (many of which were duplicates, and interestingly enough the N side had a single Zoroark in the middle which was very cool.

You're not really seeing what the phenomena is like when you just look at matome blogs or tv shows, of course everyone will want to blog about the guy with his portable Nico shrine but nobody cares about the people walking through Akiba with LL stuff all over their bags to the point where you can't see the bag anymore because it's not as impressive.

There are lots of itasha with mixed characters/series but you don't see them on yaraon or rocketnews or whatever because they're not impressive compared to the ones themed on Tayutama or something.

Half of those are barely even anime, so it's not really the same, and there's hardly anything on it.

But anon, you said it yourself that it's what an itabag is! This is what everyone else said wasn't one from the 2000-2010 era but you defended it so much that we've accepted your logic as gospel. Don't bag shame them for not fully covering their bag! It's just as much an itabag as this authentic Japanese itabag!
>>
>>8966896

Itabag = Bag covered in anime badges, buttons, pins, can badge, strap etc.

That's it, there's no other requirements.

You said there's no other requirements which means no minimum for amount of items on a bag/item.

ive been searching all day for merch to start, and i decided i want to make an oyasumi punpun itabag.. but the series has so little and hard-to-find official merch. do you think it'd be tacky to make my own buttons and plush to put in?

I'm actually not related in anyway to whoever yall replied to and should've read the thread a bit harder before replying. original poster is a fucking walnut claiming people mix shows on bags. my bad there

anyone got any pics/inspo of moomin or haikyuu bags? first is for me, second is for buddy
>>
>>8966968
Not tacky at all, a lot of other people who face the same issue thought of doing that as well.
>>
>>8966938
I think you can describe the itabag aesthetic as focusing on certain types of merch and types of anime.
I'm not any of the best previous anons, but I think there should be different definitions for different bags. Personally I think bags that are 90% craft (usually western or "niche" unmarketed stuff) bags aren't really itabags. Part of the aesthetic is just having that multitude of official released goods... Then comes in the presentation of it all. Not trying to get all MAI JAPANEZU CULTURE but anime merch/gacha/prize items are a bug part of being an anime fan there, so it makes sense something like itabags would have THAT merch be its main feature.
>>
>>8967009
*bug
I mean big.
>>
>>8966938

No they don't, both of those bags have non-anime badges on them, they're also not 'covered' in badges like itabags are. You know an ita bag when you see it.

>>8967009

You are right, but there are plenty with doujin goods. I don't really hear many Japanese anime fans be as obsessed with official goods as westerners are. Maybe it's because there is a bigger respect for doujin goods thanks to comiket etc. I feel some westerners only like comiket for the porn and wouldn't care for doujinshi otherwise

>I don't really hear many Japanese anime fans be as obsessed with official goods as westerners are
You're joking, right? Like 99.9% of all the Japanese bags posted so far are nothing but official merch while a lot of us posting here have gotten fanmerch for our bags because fanmerch is a LOT more accessible here. Japan has what, fan comics? They're not really big on the whole fanmerch thing like artist alleys here when it comes to fanmade buttons, straps, plushies, etc.

>I feel some westerners only like comiket for the porn and wouldn't care for doujinshi otherwise
Out of an entire dealers room at a convention here, only 2-3 booths sell doujinshi because no one translates them. Unless you love the artwork on the cover something you can't even open before you buy (they're all plastic sealed) or the pairing, you're not going to buy it because you can't understand it so yeah, a lot of the doujinshi sold is lewd shit because fanboys/fangirls will shell out the ridiculous cost for something involving their favorite characters/ships doing something everyone universally can understand and you know, the perverted factor of it.

tl;dr westerners are going to pay the $10 for a doujinshi involving sex instead of plot heavy comic with dialogue they can't even read
>>
>>8967054
I feel like they could've had a good idea with this but there's so many series all crammed together that you can't tell what half of it is, much less what character. At least if that bag had been dedicated to one show/character you could make sense of it with it being layered so deep but instead this is just 3+ layers of different series and you have to be right up with your nose pressed to the cover to see it all.

Japan is big on official merch especially the limited edition merch. There was an enormous line outside this food place in Ikebukuro because they had special Osomatsu items with orders.

>>8967056
>Japan has what, fan comics? They're not really big on the whole fanmerch thing like artist alleys here when it comes to fanmade buttons, straps, plushies, etc.

Huh? What are you talking about, there's a whole hall of doujin gachas in Ikebukuro Toranoana and you always see them outside melonbooks too. There are plenty of doujin goods everywhere, not just comics and CDs
>>
>>8967072

I'm not saying that's not the case, but westerners here are much more discriminant over official and unofficial goods. Lots of people in the west won't touch garage kit figures because they see them as bootlegs.
>>
>>8966269

Nope. I just went to ikebukuro last week for more itabag supplies at animate so...

This pretty much. Con AAs don't exist in the same way over there but there's a lot of focused fan events on speicific series. Go to Pixiv right now and look for any current series and you'll see peoples ads for keychains and buttons they'll be selling at such and such Comiket or fan event. All the buttons nad clear charms and lanyards we've figured out how to make for US AAs are just as easy to make over there.

Hate this. Sure, there's a lot on it, but the excessive amount of different series just takes away from it all. Just because they're all sports, doesn't mean they go together. Feels like they just attached their entire anime collection on there just because they could.

At least it has the painful part down.

You said this was last week, right? Not before the move from the flagship to the offices near KFC? I think I know the area you mean but I only saw files and albums, I didn't see the wealth of stuff that was in Shibuya's animate unless it was out of stock or something.

If weaboos do it, it's a cringy weeaboo habit for hambeasts. If Japanese (Or myself, of course) do it, it's a glorious representation of art and fandom that you could never understand.

Oh and because I want to engage in le epic bag trades instead of actually paying for merchandise - anyone I trade with has an itabag...unless I don't like them, in which case they're hambeast weaboo itas etc.

For me, the thing that makes an ideal itabag and separates it from the old artist alley bags is the unity. You don't need five of the same badge, but it helps. You don't have to stick to one character, but it helps. If you have more than one character, I think it's better to have matching items like with >>8962945. It doesn't have to be that symmetrical, but same kind of idea.

I think the amount of thought that goes into it if another big difference. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with nice layouts for my bags, choosing bases and how many of each item to buy, and the messy, random multi-series bags like >>8967291 don't give off any feeling of effort at all. Just the same feeling of the old weeb bags where you just attach whatever you have because you can. But an itabag should be better than that? IDK
>>
>>8967367
I agree. I think itabag is all about displaying how much you love a character/series and I think that care and pride in the display is intrinsic to that 'love'.

You shouldn't be surprised people on this site are trying to be elitist about the definition of something.
But honestly I think there should be some differentiating between just "having a bag with a few straps on it" and an itabag.

From the bottom of the heart to the top of the heart, I'm getting around 22cm. At its widest it's around 21cm.

Sorry for the late reply! I had to travel out of my city for an emergency and had no internet. I'm thinking about buying some purple/lilac triangle fabric like pic related (sorry for the awful quality) and make my own tote but now that you mention it, making a star in the middle of the bag sounds very jojo like! I want a bag that fits caejose perfectly but I'm having some troubles in which colours I should use. Joseph is green and caesar is blue or also green i guess? But I wanted to mix their belts/headbands kinda things so I think purple/lilac is the best choice but I'm not 100% sure. Do you have any suggestion, anon?
By the way, which jojo character are you making your itabag of?
Thanks for the link to the mousepad, if I can save enough money I'll totally buy it! I was thinking about ordering a custom one from this chinese store on ebay for cheap but I'll think about it.

I think I might finally be happy with my nozomi bag other than that little bit of empty space I'm hoping to fill with a couple more buttons or something. There was another anon a few threads ago that put their 2nd years bow on the bag handle, which is a really cute idea and I might even do that when I'm not using my 3rd years one for cosplay.

Jojo in general makes me think of purple, and lilac is softer and more romantic!

Depending on how garish you want to go, what about a tote bag with Joesph's scarf as one strap and Ceaser's ribbon as the other?

I'd use >>8964644 instead of the one I linked, it's way cheaper.

I'm still planning my bag! I can't decide what character to do, but a full series bag might get cluttered.
