>Only if you don't know the original language
You mean like most of us here?
>there is no such thing as a "better" dub
Never said there was. My point was that watching something in a language you know will give you a more immersive experience. You can detect tone, intention ,inflection, understad jokes better.
Here's an example: People often rag on about Osaka's voice in the dub, how they think it sounds really weird and outstanding. What they don't understand is that her voice is meant to be strange and different to the rest of the cast, as that's a part of her character. The reason people miss this fact is because changing the subs to a southern drawl every now and then doesn't show how different it is. People who speak Japanese can hear it, but most native speakers can't.
>>2631412
not the person who you were talking to, but i honestly feel uncomfortable when listening to dubs, especially when i'm used to watching the subbed version of that anime. plus the voice acting just feels off for some reason.
>>2631431
There are some shows that just don't work as dubs, there are some that do.
And yeah, especially if you've already seen the subbed version, it will feel off.
Took me a couple of seconds to realize what's going on here today.
>>2631464
OH SHIT.
I thought there was a few more namefags than usual.
Thanks for the feedback guys really appreciate it

My rant on osaka's accent:
Osaka's english dub isn't just a mismatch, it's an unnecessary mismatch. An osakan dialect is supposed to be attached to the stereotype in japan of osakans being business-oriented, fastpaced city dwellers. The whole joke of osaka is that her character is wildly different from what her accent is supposed to imply.
This could have been communicated better in a dub if they had used a new york accent. There is no perfect match in english for an osakan dialect but its a hell of a lot closer. But by using a southern accent, it doesnt communicate at all the stereotypes an osakan dialect does to a japanese viewer. In america a southern accent is connected with being laid-back, if anything, which makes it a horrible choice for osaka's accent. The english dub isn't just bad, it's needlessly bad. As a matter of fact, in the english manga, they thought of this, and made osaka's language more like a new englander. They got the joke. It frustrates me to no end that whoever did the casting for the dub did not.
>>2631928
I was thinking some kind of New England accent just because New England is physically to the north.
The reason they did a Southern accent is just that it's the biggest US regional accent.
Also, everyone thinks it sounds stupid.
>>2631929
The worst part is that i watched the dub first and now every time i imagine osaka speaking its in that horrible texan drawl
i dont actually hate it that much but that voice actress in particular had a very annoying drawl
>>2631930
That's actually how I imagined her voice when I read the manga
>>2631930
>>2631941
I had a teacher with really severe ADHD when I was a kid.
She was from West Virginia, and I imagine Osaka just being a more sedate version of her.
Also, she sucked in high school but ended up being great at college once she found something that her brain would actually pay attention to. I think she has a masters in marine biology.
So I imagine Osaka as having a PHD level education on sea cucumbers and being more successful academically than anyone else in the cast.
>>2631928
You literally missed the joke.
1. Osakans have many stereotypes. The common ones that are used here are: that they are stupid, loud and obnoxious but often mean well even while being frank. These are all translated perfectly well in the dub by having a southern drawl.
2. Ayuma Kasuga does not sound Osakan.
I need to repeat this as your point falls flat here: she does not sound Osakan.
Tomo even points out plainly that she doesn't speak nor act like how she expected a normal Osakan to sound like. Osaka answers this by saying that she's lived in many places before Osaka, it's just that Osaka is where she lived before the series started, so her accent is a weird unique mix of many.
The dub is a very well done one, and the fact that the two points of discussion (Chiyo and Osaka's voices) are still being argued really baffles me.
>>2632238
>These are all translated perfectly well in the dub by having a southern drawl.
I don't think Osakans are bible-thumping racists though?
>>2632238
In point 1 you claim the southern drawl is a good substitute for an osakan accent. In point 2 you claim she doesnt even have an osakan accent. So how could the dub still be accurate?
Ignoring that, the main problem is that, in the original japanese, osaka's background completely contrasts her personality. A southern drawl actually makes sense for a character who is ditsy and slow. This ruins the original joke, and just turns osaka into an uninteresting "southern girl". There's no contrast. We expect osaka's character to go with her southern accent. I hold that osaka's accent should have either been northeastern, or just normal. Anything is better than a southern accent, it completely kills the joke.
Anyways, here's Dad Hat.
Why is Azumanga Daioh rated MA-15+ in Australia? The most explicit things I can think of is Nyamo apparently telling sex stories after getting shit-faced, and Kimura in general.
>>2632526
Maybe that bit about tit sizes.
>>2631929
>everyone
I think it's adorable and suits her personality.
>>2632581
They've actually done studies on this, and speakers with a Southern accent are perceived as being the least intelligent.
The Midwestern, Fargo kind of accent got the best rating.
>>2632591
You're talking about the most nofun country in the entire Western world.
>>2632272
>A southern drawl actually makes sense for a character who is ditsy and slow
You are aware that she sounds slurred and laid back in the original right? As in, her voice matches her personality.
>In point 1 you claim the southern drawl is a good substitute for an osakan accent.
In many respects, it is. This is a joke that isn't translatable because there a dozens of contradictory stereotypes of what an "Osakan" is like depending on your source.
They are slow, they are hyper, they are business oriented, they are lazy, they are rude and they are well mannered. This joke cannot be perfected, but lets break it down to see what is going on.
Tomo specifically states that she expects a hyper, loud character.
Osaka comes in, she is quiet and slow paced.
Her voice accentuates her slow manner and it's vastly different to the other girls.
Now here's how it can be translated:
Tomo expects a fast, paced, smiling southern girl, think the "rich Texan stereotype".
Osaka shows up and she is laid back, dumb and slow paced, think the "Texan country bumpkin stereotype".
Her voice accentuates her personalty and is vastly different to the other girls.
Now ignoring the fact that voices can mean different things to different people, and that this joke works perfectly well with a southern accent, and the fact that it's bborderline untranslatable: How would making it a New England accent make any difference?
People would still be arguing the point saying they should have made her Texan.
>>2632616
I was thinking Boston because the relationship between Boston and New York is kind of similar to Osaka and Tokyo.
It's hard to imagine a laid back Bostoner. At least for me.

This is a pretty harmful stereotype. Most of the south is made up of kind and welcoming people. The narrative of southerners as dumb racists who should be ignored is part of what contributes to the south's tendency to turn inward and distrust others.

To be fair, most parts of the deep south that have that type of accent do tend to be quite racist.
I mean most aren't violent or rude about it, but they are still very racist.
The bigger cities and such aren't bad, but they also don't tend to have that heavy accent either.

She didn't do drugs she was just a japanese girl who thought differently. I guess she could be considered really shy and slow. She'd often forget things she's learned, like putting water on hot oil, scream drop the pan, and run hide. She had an odd fascination with bears and she thought slugs were cute. Osaka style haircut and was pretty much cute at all times. Sometimes she'd think deeply about random subjects like why gravity works and she couldn't draw pandas. I caught her multiple times brandishing a kitchen knife; which she said she wasn't.
>>2651253
I know, it was hard to believe but it was true. I dated a quiet, tall, girl with long black hair. she had around a cup as well. She absolutely loved cute things and lamented that she couldn't 'look cute'. When I told her that she was cute she'd blush and turn away. she liked cats but couldn't have them for reasons. When she was over she'd try and play with my cats but would act with extreme caution because she thought they'd attack her 'like the other cats'. After that she was always petting them. Eventually things progressed and she left me for Kaorin.
