If this isn't on-topic for this board just let me know and I'll delete it:
I have a shithole job. Recently the upper management made the decision to switch all their accounting over to a 3rd party, which has fucked all kinds of things up. Namely, they attempted to get everyone to sign up for these laughable pay cards instead of receiving checks or direct deposit. This is illegal in my state; wages must be dispersed via check or cash unless the employee specifically opts to use direct deposit or a pay card. The checks everyone received this pay period are just stubs that say "THIS IS NOT A CHECK," and list an account number which nobody is familiar with as to where the money is. Apparently everyone's wages were put into pay card accounts despite nobody opting for or receiving one. Surely this is not legal, right? Do I/we need a lawyer? I don't think any of us have the money to afford one; is there somewhere/someone we can go to for legal advice for free? So far upper management is either incompetent or unresponsive to emails; it's like talking to a brick wall.

Because we don't know where you are/we are fucking idiots. I don't think this is the right place to look for this kind of advices.
Otherwise just get you and your boys to a lawyer (100/200 dollars for a consultations with a specialist) and see what he tells you.

If the company has a fair amount of money (it's got a few million or more in capital) then you and maybe one or two other people should get a free consultation with a local attorney, who will be happy to sue for damages, etc., for no upfront cost. Pick an attorney with a Jewish surname for best results.
inb4 liberals whining about me being racist, I have successfully used this formula (pick a jewish lawyer and get a free settlement) three times in my life. Once against the city (tripped over a tree root in the sidewalk), once against a local Coca Cola distributor (a truck clipped my car and the driver drove off), and once against a life insurance company (raised their rates after I locked in a five-year rate).

Jesus Christ buddy, learn to make money and not sue for it..

OP, I'd first go in and talk to upper management and state your concerns. Don't email or call, actually go up to them in person and talk to them about it. Going to court is stressful and so I'd make that your last option

I'd have done this already but the company's headquarters is literally several states away. I'd spend half of what I'm supposed to receive in gas.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS
DO NOT
BAD ADVICE
You don't need a lawyer. Call your state board of labor. They love this kind of shit.

Yeah, but they just fine the company and you don't see any of the proceeds.
Sue sue sue. Company should know better than to pull this kinda shit, and op can find a similar job to tide him over likely fairly easily.
If this is against the law in your state then any lawyer with brains will take your case pro bono. If you don't get any bites, look for a new job pronto.
