I'm 28, live alone in the US, make 20k a year, but spend almost all of it on taxes, food and rent. The rest goes into savings/stocks.

I recently got an emergency procedure done at a hospital and I owe a little over $40,000. (No insurance)
I only have about 15k in savings and it took my entire life to save that.

Is my life officially over?
>>
Hide your savings in meme coins (untraceable) and tell the hospital to fuck off and don't pay for it.

thanks, I needed a good laugh right now.

wouldn't it be safer to just put my money under my mattress (per se) and lie about having it?
>>
No.

A few things could happen.
You'll pay this debt

You'll finance this debt over time and pay it off slow.

you'll have to default on this debt. You'll settle for pennies on the dollar.

You'll not pay them a cent and they may collect something if they have recourse on your credit score.

You'll file for bankruptcy. ch11 redo the debt and make 2 years payments.

best bet is probably settlement ahead of time. but get whatever credit offerings you can before you file for settlement.
Just call and say you there is no way you can pay without very generous terms. That it would likely be in their best interest to settle.

OP, this is your fucking wake-up call. Now its official, you dont have any other option than to study and work you ass off in order to climb the corporate ladder. Start by sucking HR cock for free interships. Learn to code/webdev in the meanwhile, and freelance on the side (have fun competing with 5$/hr. indians). It will be hard as fk, but possible.

The thought of owing someone multiple college funds worth of money and having to pay it for the rest of my life makes my stomach churn. Are you sure suicide isn't an option?

>Just call and say you there is no way you can pay without very generous terms.
In my experience hospitals don't tend to be filled with very understanding or sympathetic people. I doubt they're gonna give me a big discount if I say "come on bro cut me some slack".

>muh slacker lifestyle
I just wanted to live a carefree life, why does god hate me

>Suicide over a paltry 40k
Debt passed to parents siblings etc...

> in your experience
What does that experience amount to exactly? Have you ever owned any hospital debt? Managed it? Administered it?

Literally what are they gonna do. They can sue you and get nothing. or they can work with you and get something. Choice is their's.

You call. Say I'm doing the math. I don't see a way I can pay this on my meager salary. What are my options and how can you help?

Not after applying for all the credit cards you can until they stop giving them to you.

> god
External locus of control. Not /biz/. You did this to yourself.

Yeah, but then your money is at risk from house fires and burglary.

They will if you say, "I have talked to my lawyer about the money I owe you. The only way you're going to get any money out of me is if you give me very generous terms. Otherwise, I will declare bankruptcy and you will get nothing."

Donald Trump was millions of dollars in debt in the 90's, and he used that overwhelming debt as leverage against the banks to get them to renegotiate the terms of his debt.

If they say, "We cannot work with you on this debt."
You say, "That's fine. You will get nothing." Hang up. Do not answer their calls until the next day or a couple of days later. They will probably be happier to renegotiate then.

Or, if they won't renegotiate after a while, declare bankruptcy.

Wouldn't know, don't pay for health care like a chump. Save that money for memes
>>
>>1167398
It is. You should kill yourself on the hospital's doorstep.
>>
OP, you better not just pay it. You have a small amount of income and you don't have insurance. Since you don't have insurance, you are in charge of bringing the price down yourself. See what charity you qualify for from them, talk to their billing department, haggle the price down (no insurance? less work for them, so they should charge less--before obamacare, I know a lot of places would routinely charge about 40% - 60% less for uninsured because they didn't have to jump through insurance hoops for them). Not sure about now. But you need to put your big boy pants on, be polite, and go talk to the hospital and they will point you in the right direction towards lowering the billing and setting up a payment plan. Remember, set up a payment plan. Don't pay the full price. And don't admit to any assets, etc. unless you have to and are directly ask. A lot of times they ask for tax returns. Your tax return doesn't show a 15k bank account, so don't fucking mention it unless you have to. Alright?

get a insurance asap and pay it off. Stop posting on /biz/ until you have read some shit on how to figure out life

Tell the hospital to fuck off. They can pretty much never collect.

Thanks Obama (unironically).
